    3. Well, I have not yet found the rest of my pages on the Johnson marriages in Gwinnett Co., GA, so in the meantime, I will give you what else I can find on various Johnson individuals. Taken from "Kegley's Virginia Frontier" by F. B. Kegley, I find the following: Pg. 114 - "In the same year (1757) Sarah Lynch, widow of Charles Lynch, Sr., organized the South River Monthly Meeting in Bedford County. (Quakers?) Among the early families in this meeting were Micajah and Sarah Lynch Terrell, Edward and Mary Terrell, Micajah and Susannah Moorman, Zachariah and Bettie Moorman, John and Mary Bowles Lynch, Charles and Ann Lynch, Edward and Mary Lynch, Henry and Mary Kerby, CHRISTOPHER AND BETTY JOHNSON, BENJAMIN AND MARY JOHNSON, WILLIAM AND SUSANNA JOHNSON, Moses and Ruth Hendrick, John Candler, Byrum and Eleanor Ballard, Christopher and Judith Anthony." Pg. 439 - "II. Developments on James River, Craig's Creek and Catawba - A New Interest in Land on James River On Pott's Creek, surveys were made for EZEKIEL JOHNSON................... Pg. 168 - "Patrick Shirkey and William Watkins had charge from James Montgomery's at Catawba to the side of Craig's Creek where John Potts quit clearing, James Cloyd succeeded William Preston from Graham's Clearing to JAMES JOHNSTON'S, and Samuel McRoberts from JAMES JOHNSTON'S to Josiah Ramsey's Cabin." That's it from that particular book. I only had a few pages copied. At the time, I thought I had a Moorman/Moreman connection which name was mentioned on several of those pages, which has proven to be wrong. Sue (Johnson) Howard

    1. Arthur Johnson and Margaret Phares
    2. Reba
    3. I have a pet peeve I want to share with Johnson researchers of this couple. Their are all kinds of listers who list Margaret Phares as the mother of all of Arthur Johnson Sr's kids. And the same people list Margaret Phares as being born to John Phares II in 1736. This keeps her from being the Mom of all but the baby born to her after Arthur Sr. died. Her name was Margaret. A researcher some time back on the Johnson line in general said Arthur Sr was married at least twice before he married Margaret Phares. Research done on Arthur Jr says he was born "east of Va". He was b in 1747. If anyone knows Arthur Jr's mom please let us know. And if it isn't too much trouble and you have a web page please remove Margaret Phares as mom to the kids. John 1745 Arthur 1747 Andrew 1748 Jane 1752 Sarah 1753 Mary 1755 Thanks so much for letting me vent................ REba Johnson

Looking for ancestors of Jesse Johnson, born on Isle of Wight, Va in about 1826 and who married Margaret Cofer. He moved to Guilford, North Carolina and worked in the mills. Family is numerous in North Carolina but no information about father and mother in VA. looking for any clues. It would be nice to find siblings or any info. I have lots of info on descendants and am willing to share any information that I have. Linda

    2. Hello list, I have some good news that I thought I would share with the list. I have posted many times in the past asking for help with my elusive Johnson G Grandmother, gg grandmother and Aunt India Johnson from Nanjemoy Charles co., MD. Well I decided to browse the GODFREY census's ( one of the few times that I could get in without being interrupted every 2 minutes with the unending request for screen name and password.) And I found India under the name INDIE Johnson living with her mother Mary Mason Johnson living in Seat Pleasant Villiage in PG Co., MD in the yrs 1910, 1920. I did not find my great grand mother Emma though. My question to the group is does anyone have any Johnson kin living in PG County? Mary's Mason Johnson's husband ( W Lawson Johnson) must have died between 1900-1910 I have checked the MD State archives for his death date but could not find it .How would I find the death date for India and Mary after 1930? 2. what were the childrens names and birth dates? Thank you Sue, this is what we do on the Cox line, and it certainly does help. My Cox line married Johnson - my GGGrandmother, but I can not find out any information on her. Almarinda Susan Johnson, b. 1830, possibly N.C. or GA. She married my GGGrandfather, John W. Cox, August 29, 1847 - where I also can not find. In the John W. Cox Bible, which I have, Almarinda writes that her name was Johnson, and date of birth and date of marriage, along with her 9 children. She does not write John W. Cox's place of birth only date, 1828. Evidently she did not know where? 1. Re: [JOHNSON] Correction-More Gwinnett "Johnson" Marriages
    2. Carolyn, Thank you so much for the Gwinnett Johnson marriages. Gwinnett records are scarce as hen's teeth because of the courthouse fire. Anything is appreciated. However, I have one correction ... Re: Sarah Johnson m. Mathew Fowler in 1858 - this is a transcription error made by the persons who originally transcribed the records. I have a photocopy of that particular marriage certificate and it says "Nathan Fowler" plain as day -- not Mathew. Nathan Fowler (b. abt 1800) was the widower of Elizabeth Pepper(s) Fowler who died sometime between 1850 and 1858. Sarah (Sally) Johnson was the widower of (?) Johnson, and was the mother-in-law of Nathan's son, Reuben Fowler. (are you still with me?) Sarah shows in the 1850 Gwinnett census with her daughter, Frances Ann (Fanny) Johnson and Reuben Fowler, and their son, Nathan Fowler, age 1. Nathan (the elder) and Elizabeth Fowler are in the same census. (Now here comes the confusing part). After Elizabeth died, Nathan married his son's mother-in-law, (Mrs.) Sarah Johnson, but the marriage was short-lived. Nathan died sometime before June, 1860, making Sarah a widow again, but this time with the name of Fowler. In 1870, Sarah is back living with Reuben and Frances (Fanny) again, but now she is Sarah Fowler. In 1880 Gwinnett, she is living with her grandson, Nathan Hamilton Fowler. I could not find her in 1860 Gwinnett but I still say there are a lot of people missing from that census. I believe some of the pages may have been lost, possibly by the original census census taker who just renumbered what he had. People who are there in 1850 and 1870 are missing from 1860. One is another Johnson: Hester Fowler, daughter of Nathan, married Edward Gresham and appears in the 1840 and 1850 census. According to the 1850 census, their children were William D. James H., George W., and Edward H. Gresham. Possibly a daughter named Nancy Gresham. By 1868, Hester had married James Johnson (according to her grandfather's will and estate settlement. Have absolute proof of this. They both signed.). James is thought to be the son of Joel Johnson and Matilda Williams. James and his first wife (a Gresham?) are also in the 1850 census, right down the road from Hester and Edward. All four are missing in 1860. Hester and James Johnson reappear, married, in 1870.) This one has had me going for 5 years. Sure wish I could find those families in 1860. Anyway, just wanted to correct the marriage record on Sarah and Nathan Fowler. Would be interested in the source of these marriages. Some I know are on microfilm (from which my photocopy was taken); some are in Flanigan's history. Were these compiled from a combination of those sources? Judy K. in Newnan, GA GGG granddaughter of Nathan Fowler

Some were done as WPA projects and one of the principles of WPA employment was that persons were hired without having the skills required for the tasks, they were just hired anyway. I've seen David that was really clear transcribed as Daniel. I've seen Davis transcribed as David though to the modern eye the tall script s did sort of look like a d. <SNIP> > I could not find her in 1860 Gwinnett but I still say there > are a lot of people missing from that census. People who are there in 1850 and 1870 are missing from 1860. > <SNIP> I've been digging in a Missouri 1870 census for missing relations. These things I've found to prove the census taker lost pages. 1. Several families and townships ended at the bottom of a page and there was no summary on those townships. The odds of family and township ending exactly at the bottom of a page is one in 32. Half the townships ending that way, that is very suspicious. 2. There was a summery of each census published a few years after the census, like 1873 for that 1870 census. This summary showed county details like totals by township, sex, slave status, and other statistics without names of individuals. You can compare those township and county totals to what you find on the microfilm to see if the census pages were lost by the census taker or the census bureau. I don't know any way to recover any such lost pages these days but at least some hint can be developed on why people were missing that should have been there. The one always wonders if the census taker decided to not take the trails least traveled and so ignored a portion of the population. More so if he was told he might not be received cordially (e.g. treated as a revenuer). Even when he found families, sometimes different parties answered the questions one decade (or maybe a nosy neighbor) and things were missed. In one of my family listings, the kids were ten years older the second census, but Ma and Pa were only 9 years older and Ma and Pa's birthplaces moved a state or three. > Judy K. in Newnan, GA > GGG granddaughter of Nathan Fowler > > Gerald J. -- Dr. Gerald N.
