----- Original Message ----- From: Reba To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2006 8:45 PM Subject: Arthur Johnson and Margaret Phares I have a pet peeve I want to share with Johnson researchers of this couple. Their are all kinds of listers who list Margaret Phares as the mother of all of Arthur Johnson Sr's kids. And the same people list Margaret Phares as being born to John Phares II in 1736. This keeps her from being the Mom of all but the baby born to her after Arthur Sr. died. Her name was Margaret. A researcher some time back on the Johnson line in general said Arthur Sr was married at least twice before he married Margaret Phares. Research done on Arthur Jr says he was born "east of Va". He was b in 1747. If anyone knows Arthur Jr's mom please let us know. And if it isn't too much trouble and you have a web page please remove Margaret Phares as mom to the kids. John 1745 Arthur 1747 Andrew 1748 Jane 1752 Sarah 1753 Mary 1755 Thanks so much for letting me vent................ REba Johnson
Next, I have "some" marriages between Gilbert individuals and Johnson individuals. Not too many, though. May have a couple of other mentions of Johnson's. Mary Johnson married James Gilbert in Maryland Samuel Johnson was the second husband of a Mary ? who had first married Garvis Gilbert in Maryland in about 1742 A Thomas Johnson and Barnet Johnson were securities on a bond posted by a Ruth Gilbert and a John Love. This took place in Baltimore County, Maryland on May 15, 1760 Mary Johnson married either James Gilbert or Thomas Gilbert, III on January 12, 1782 in Maryland Mary "Polly" Gilbert married a Thomas Johnston in 1808 in Georgia William Gilbert, Jr. married Priscilla E. E. Johnson in 1827 in Tennessee Harriet Virginia H. Gilbert married Wesley Johnson in 1831 in Tennessee I know some of this is very vague, but maybe it'll help someone.
Now, the only problem with giving you these marriages is that I don't know where these marriages took place. A lady - back in 2001 - sent me a whole bunch of Thomas marriages and the dates, but no locations. I had asked for Thomas marriages, apparently, because my maternal grandmother was a Thomas. Here goes, for what it's worth: Ann Johnson married a Benjamin Thomas on Nov. 12, 1838 Elizabeth Johnston m. Camm Thomas on Oct. 3, 1790 Elizabeth D. Johnson m. Daniel Thomas on June 30, 1844 James Johnson m. Elizabeth Thomas on Nov. 5, 1837 Emily E. Johnson m. James A. Thomas on Nov. 25, 1861 Bryant Johnston m. Mary Thomas on Jan. 26, 1832 Barbara Johnson m. Richard Thomas on Jan. 23, 1812 William Johnson m. Sarah H. Thomas on Feb. 1, 1832 That's all.
I have a few pages from a book on Putnam County, Georgia that I copied from a book (can't remember the name of it now) that I got on inter-library loan, and so far, I have found only one Johnson marriage. I don't have the actual Johnson page, unfortunately, as I was not looking for my Johnson's in Putnam Co. The one marriage I found is: Eliza Johnson who married a Nathaniel Voss on Dec. 9, 1830 I found one Johnston: Charlotte A. Johnston who married John Wright on Jan. 3, 1817 On a page from Will Book B - 1822-1857, I found the following Johnston(s): p. 171 - Joseph Johnston - He was one of the Executors of Richard Conine's will dated September 9, 1837 p. 173 - Thomas Johnston - He was a friend and one of the Executors of the will of a James Burt, dated May 14, 1829 Sorry, that's all I have on Johnson/ston marriages or wills in Putnam Co., GA. I had someone send me all the records they could extract from some CD they had for Ransom Brown and I found just ONE who married a JOHNSEN: P. K. Johnsen married R. B. Brown in Panola Co., Mississippi April 23, 1890 Mary H. Johnson married A. P. Brown in Cherokee Co., AL on November 30, 1882 Jordan Johnson married Amanda Brown in Russell Co., AL on March 14, 1872 Mary F. Johnson married R. B. Brown in Murray Co., GA on June 5, 1875 J. A. Johnson married Mary E. Brown in Tippah Co., MS on November 9, 1865 William Johnson married Mary Brown in Copiah Co., MS on January 5, 1893 Sam Johnson married Mary Ann Brown or Burden (that's what it says) in Simpson Co., MS on January 20, 1897 Don't know what else I'm going to find in all my myriads of papers! Sue
I am researching my husband's great grandmother, Elizabeth DUKE, born about 1865 in MO. She had a daughter named Helen born in St Louis Women's Hospital on May 5, 1887. The father was listed as a David JOHNSON who was in real estate. They never married as far as I can tell and she worked for the family and lived on the grounds of the JOHNSON family home. She later married Frank GOLDTEIN and had 6 children with him. No record has been found of their marriage. The children were raised Catholic and were: Elizabeth Rose, b abt 1890 d 1943, m Frederick Schneider and then ?? LEWIS. Josephine, b 1892, m BURGET Marie, b 1897, m ?? BOWLER Loretta, b 1898, m ?? SQUIRES Jennie, b 1892, m ?? WALTERS Eddie, b 1905, m Frances ?? Any info on any of these people would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bobbie
Okay, here's something I got off the Internet, but maybe you haven't ever seen it. This is called "Lunenburg County, Virginia Publick Claims 1780-1784. I'm just going to give you the names of any Johnson's I see on there. "At a court held for Lunenburg County the 15th day of March 1782 agreeable to an act for adjusting claims for property impressed or taken for public use." Page 3 Isaac Johnson 77# bacon Page 15 Isaac Johnson for 325# beef David Johnson for 250# beef Missing Page 13 Isaac Johnson for furnishing Continental soldiers 40 diets Page 26 And at a Court held for the said county 9th May following David Johnson for same (and I'm assuming they meant for the same thing that was given before that which was "a gun for use of militia ordered to assistance of Gen. Green" Next was the following: "1769 A List of Tithes taken in Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg County, June 10, 1769 by Everard Dowsing, Gent" Tithes Land Michael Johnson 1 Tithe 270 Next was the following: "1769 List of Tithables, &c, taken by Charles Hamlin, Gent., for the year 1769" William Johnson 1 Tithe 258 Next was the following: "1769 Lunenburg County - A List of Tithes, &c, taken by Joseph Williams" Joseph Johnson 3 Tithes 200 Isaac Johnson's List Michael Johnson 5 Tithes 600 David Johnson 1 Tithe 100 "List of Tithes and Land taken by Thomas Winn - 1769" (page 280) Andrew Johnston John Patterson Wm. Hatchett Christopher McConnico 6 Tithes 632 James Johnson 3 Tithes 100 That was all the Johnson's mentioned. Of course, there were lots of other names. If you need any other names looked up, I'll be glad to look for them on this particular list. Sue Howard
Had a busy weekend. Here are more Johnson marriages in Gwinnett Co., GA. Want to thank everybody for their nice comments. Does anyone have info on Nancy JOHNDON and Thomas D. GOWEN, wh married about 1799 in SC ? They had children there and much later moved to Louisiana. Thanks and be Blessed, Lorene
Recently I posted about my Johnson family in Virginia. I have had no response to that post so I am going to give you all the information that I have in hopes that someone has a link. First reference to Jesse Johnson is 1850 Census of Isle of Wight County, VA. Jesse is listed as a laborer, age 22, living in the same household as the Thomas A. Heath family and along with several other unrelated 20-22 year olds. Margaret Cofer, his wife-to-be is living with her family, Thomas and Willie Cofer, also on the 1850 Census of Isle of Wight Co, VA. In 1860 Census, Isle of Wight County, VA - Jesse and Margaret are listed as husband and wife and have George W. Johnson (son) age 3 and Andrew Francis Johnson (son) age 10/12 (Andrew Francis is My great grandfather). Jesse is listed as a factory worker and there are several other people living in the household. One of these people is Mary F Heath, wife of Thomas Heath who Jesse was living with in 1850. Jesse is listed as Head of household. On the 1870 Census, for Jamestown Township, Guilford Co, NC, Jesse and Margaret are listed with five of their children. George - 12, Andrew - 11, Lensemmis(my spelling as the census is unreadable) - female age 8, Margaret - 3, and Virginia - 1. Margaret and Virginia are listed as being born in North Carolina and the other kids were born in Virginia. I assume they moved to NC around 1862 - 1867. Jesse is listed as head of household and as a machinist. On the 1880 Census, for Jamestown Township, Guilford County, NC - Jesse and Margaret are listed with George - 23, Andrew - 20, Luema - 17, Maggie - 12, Virginia - 10, Anna - 5, and Effa - 1. Jesse is a machinist. On the 1900 Census for Jamestown Township, Guilford Co, NC - Jesse and Margaret are listed with Anna - 25, and Ethel - 22. Jesse is listed as a Cotton Mill Machinist. Jesse and Margaret died in Guilford, NC I am looking for any information about parents of Jesse Johnson. I would be happy to find a sibling or anyone who can help me find out more about this family. I know Jesse was not dropped off by a spaceship. I have lots of information about My great grandfather, Andrew Francis Johnson but not a clue about Jesse. I am willing to share any information that I have with anyone who has a connection with this family in hopes that eventually we can find where they came from. Thanks, Linda
I haven't posted in awhile, so here goes. So far my Johnson's are all in Virginia. My Great, great, grandparents were Ann R ALLEN and her first husband (m 4 Dec 1851) John Henry JOHNSON of Petersburg, VA. John Henry JOHNSON died March 1861 and is buried in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA. Ann R. ALLEN’s second husband was Francis C. GITMAN / GITTMAN Ann and John Henry JOHNSON had one son (that I know of), Jno. W. R. JOHNSON (name on marriage certificate, but, I believe his name was John Walter Royal JOHNSON, see below for more info). Jno / John W R JOHNSON and his first wife Martha WELLS had a daughter Nancy Elenor Johnson. Martha died giving birth to her 2nd child, who died almost 5 months later. Jno / John W R JOHNSON married the second time at age 23, on 25 May 1876, in Petersburg, VA., to Ellen E. HALL, daughter of Jas. & Mary HALL. From this second marriage I know of eight children: 1 Justin Eaton JOHNSON, born 1878? Know nothing else about him. 2 Alice Dewey JOHNSON, born 12 January 1879-80 in Petersburg, VA. Never married. 3 Clara Elizabeth JOHNSON, born 19 March 1980-81 in Petersburg, VA. Never married. 4 Rebecca Steele JOHNSON, born 19 February 1883 in Boldsboro, NC. Married 26 November 1908, William Tazewell Ross MORRIS II. 5 Walter Gladstone JOHNSON, born 9 May 1886 in Richmond, VA. Married 23 June 1925, Ethel Marie TURNER 6 Allan Pitt JOHNSON, born 10 June 1887-88 in Richmond, VA. Married 17 November 1914, Nellie Maxwell ARCHER. (These are my grandparents.) 7 Charles Royal JOHNSON, born 22 January 1890-02 in Richmond, VA. Married Anna WACKER 8 Wallace Chambers JOHNSON, born?, died in infancy 7 June 1896 Jno / John Walter Royal JOHNSON died 8 Feb 1908 in Richmond, VA. The family story is that while running in the rain to catch a street car, he slipped and fell (he might have been hit by the street car), and died soon after (hours? days? weeks?). I haven't found his obit or a newspaper article about his fall. I have a lot of information about the decendents, but have not been able to go back any farther than John Henry Johnson. I'm very willing to share information. Marinell Johnson Reeves
I would like to hear from anyone whose Johnsons came from Virginia. My Johnsons were in Virginia, then early in the 1800s moved to Kentucky, where my gggrandfather James was born in 1825. Before 1830 I think they moved to Indiana and my James moved on to Iowa with his family. He died in 1895 in South Dakota where he went from time to time to mine it seems. His wife was Sylvia Bliss, dau. of Jeremiah and Mary Lucore Bliss. Thanks for any response, Debby Jorgensen
