    1. Re: [JOHNSON] My Johnson Line

    3. Dewey, William Johnson may be the father of my Jesse. I do not yet have a record to prove that Jesse is related to William and Jeffrey Johnson although the 1800 census of Morgan, Wilkes County NC lists them all and several other Johnsons as well. This leads me to believe they are family and an unsubstantiated separate record on Jeffrey exists until such time that I have the proof that my Jesse is related. ______________________________________________________________________ Jesse was probably born 1766 to 1770 in Surry County which later was Wilkes County. Wilkes County was formed from Surry county and the District of Washington in 1777, and was named in honor of John Wilkes, a distinguished English statesman and member of Parliament. The act was to become effective February 15, 1778. In what is now Tennessee there was local governments organized within the borders of Wilkes and later were admitted as counties to the State of Franklin but until Tennessee was organized Wilkes County was the legal division of all the territory included in the borders of the county. In 1790, North Carolina ceded her western lands which included Washington, Davidson, Hawkins, Greene, Sullivan, Sumner, and Tennessee counties, to the federal government. Between 1790 and 1796 the territory was known as Tennessee Territory, but in 1796 it became simply Tennessee, the sixteenth state in the Union. The earliest record I have of Jesse is his marriage in Green County, TN on 4 December 1798. The time period of Jesse's birth to his marriage was a period of a lot of changes in state and county formations. This fact can make for a lot of confusion on where people were located at the time. The next record I have on Jesse is the 1800, 1810, and 1820 census of Wilkes County, NC. So, what was Jesse doing in Greene County 2 years before 1800? My guess is commercial ventures. Provisions for the Tennessee area were probably bought in North Carolina and hauled over the mountains to Tennessee. Jesse and other brothers most likely made many trips back and forth. He must have met and then married Nancy on one of the trips. 1. [JOHNSON] Roll call

    3. Those aliens really get around, they left James Penrose Johnson in the Lancaster- Newcastle area of PA about 1790-1815? He turned up in Naperville, IL in early 1840's. James married Cordelia Murray Dec 1843. He was said to be nearly twice as old as her. She died in 1845 after the birth of their son , Byron Johnson, at the age of 21. James Penrose Johnson was a wheelwright by trade and had bulit the home his in- laws, the John Murrays lived in. After the death of Cordelia, James left his son, Byron, and went to the CA goldfields where he died. That was in 1850. Byron was raised by his grandparents and married Mary Skittery Lander and went to IA. She died in 1876 and Byron married Paulina Sabra Ross. I am descended from Byron and Paulina. I know the story form Byron's birth on but have no clue to any of James Penrose Johnson's life before Naperville or his parents, siblings, ancestry...all a blank canvas for many years. I think there should be a Penrose Johnson connection and there were a lot of Quakers in the area but unfortunately all the meeting records i have found have not helped. I know he couldn't have just shown up grown and ready to marry, some where he has to have a family. Thanks for any help. Jackie Doeden

    2. Bill Russell
    3. This was my GG Grandfather found his obit. mother was Sallie Little can not read his father first name ??? Johnson any help I would be greatfull Bill Russell in stormy Nicholasville, Jessamine County KY. Mr. Joseph Johnson, who lived near Munday's Landing, died on Monday last and was buried Tuesday afternoon in the Rhorer burying ground. "Uncle Joe," as he was called, would have been 101 years old had he lived until the 15th of December next. About a year ago he was baptized near Brooklyn Bridge in the Kentucky river by Rev. Clarence Walker of the Wilmore Baptist church and probably was the oldest man that was ever received into a church in this manner. He was a Union veteran, having entered the Federal army at the first call and continued with it until Lee surrendered at Appomattox. It is related that Johnson, when he entered the polling place in the race between McCreary and O'Rear, stated that he had voted the Republican, and its predecessors, ticket for 70 years, but that he was going to vote for McCreary and the Democratic ticket.

On May 28th, for example, the collector appears to have been on the Holly River in what is now Braxton County. The men listed as Exempted were probably all aged or infirm and excused from paying the tax by the court. Constables and a few other officers are noted as they were also exempt. April 17th Edward Johnson ****the Edward I would like to know about***** Elizabeth Bell & son John Elizabeth Saylor & son Samuel Isaac Springston I believe Patrick and Edward are somehow related. Edward was in the Tucker Co. area of Randolph Co. Va. in 1802 - Tucker co. did not become a county until the 1860's so it was still Randolph - however the border was in dispute with Monongalia, too. There were other Johnsons in Tucker Co. related to a Garrett Johnson - Edward is not related to those Johnsons - they were Dutch and I believe Edward was English or perhaps Scotch-Irish. His daughter Margaret married William Loughry a son of Patrick Loughry of Harrison Co. Va. Patrick was a son of John Loughry/Lochry - a son of Jeremiah, they were of Scotch-Irish descent. In 1804 he purchased 1000 acres of land in the big bend of the Tennessee (River) now in the State of Alabama, from Samuel and John JOHNSTON who claimed the right to sell. 3. I am just beginning my quest of my family tree. I am trying to find some information on my grandfather James Parker Johnson (7/29/1901-8/1/1942) who married Oma Darse Sparks. I think he was born in either GA or AL. I believe his father was Martin Johnson from Arab, Alabama. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Michael Johnson --------------------------------- Ring'em or ping'em. Make PC-to-phone calls as low as 1¢/min with Yahoo! Messenger with Voice.
