Ira Hayes, US Marine, was one of the six photographed raising the second flag on Iwo Jima. Three of these marines died on Iwo Jima. The other three were treated as heroes upon their return to the United States. Ira was a Pima Indian raised on the Reservation in Arizona and in 1955 died a tragic death in a ditch on this same reservation. His mother was Nancy Hayes and his father was named Jobe Hayes. Has anyone any information as to the lineage of Jobe Hayes? I am reading a book "Flags of Our Fathers" written by James Bradley, the son of one of the flag raisers. Jack Bradley, his father, was a U. S. Navy Hospital Corpsman serving with the Marines on Iwo Jima and was awarded the Navy Cross for an act of heroism (seperate from the flag-raising) during that engagement. Any way I was curious when I read of the father of Ira Hayes. Every time I have seen Jobe as a given name there has been a Jobe in the family somewhere. Roy Jobe Sulphur Springs, TX
