    3. Regarding the spelling of Douthit....nope, that's the first time I've seen that particular permutation. That's not the way his great grandfather John Douthit Sr spelled it ( I've seen pictures of his tombstone). I've seen William's name spelled Dowthitt...and I've seen Uriah's spelled Dorethal (1850 Census transcript) Dowthit (in AR), Douthal (NC Marriage Bonds).....there are 20 + permutations for this surname (and growing). It is a word construction that seems to inspire clerks and other transcribers to get creative. It's impossible to do a search using this surname unless it's Soundex. I no longer expect it to be spelled "correctly" and just look through all the "Ds"....of course, it's also been spelled Toudith...go figure....am I whining yet ? I stumbled across Sarah Smith Dowthitte quite accidently......while looking for someone else. That's usually the way I find the Douthits. Thank goodness she was kind enough to have Smith put on her tombstone too......other wise I might have decided it couldn't possibly be her. Catawba Co was not where I expected her to be at all. I had assumed that she would most likely be buried on the Old Martin Farm where her parents and grandparents are supposed to be in Wilkes Co. So...in answer to your question...NONE of the Douthits spelled their name with any consistency...and I know they were literate. Perhaps even bi or tri-lingual (English, Irish and German)...perhaps the differences in the other alphabets influenced them...don't know. I keep reminding myself that standardized spelling is a modern concept...and gritting my teeth.....<grin> Oh....I noticed that Lucinda (d/o Jacob Douthit & Polly Moreland) hasn't been up-dated. I thought I sent her husband (Hitchen Johnson) and child Jacob D. Johnson ( per "Here Come the Douthits")......it was very late at night though ...did Hal (my demon seed computer) eat it perhaps ? He's been known to do that. Jacob Douthit was enumerated in their household on the 1850 Surry Co NC Census . He was buried 1859, Taylorsville Cemetery, Alexander Co NC. I think you have Jacob's info posted already. Oh...by the way. I have more details on Sarah if you want them....Her grave lies in Section 1-A, Row 5 of the Oakwood Cemetery (which is right across the street from Oakwood School). I even have driving instructions for how to get there....wow. And there's a library close by ....two libraries, the old one and the new one. She's halfway in between.....<sigh>...I've gotta go there.
