How strict were they in the time frame you're referring to... and were they Quakers ? At various points in time, anything other than the "Missionary position" was verbotten. I seem to recall that procreating for pleasure rather than too produce children was also a no-no. And our ancestors took their taboos and their salvation very seriously.
