Well...sounds as though it's highly unlikely the author is going to send any "cease and desist" letters. The Fair Use doctrine is actually rather generous in terms of allowing citations as long as the work (and author) are cited (as opposed to plagiarizing someone else's work and passing it off as your own for commercial purposes). Copyright laws are designed to protect intellectual property from being pirated and re-sold in the marketplace. ~malinda Freida Wells <[email protected]> wrote: Dear List, I am forwarding this letter that came thru another list so that you will know about using copyrighted material. This is the case where Nancee Seifert bought a book many years ago and wishes to share with the rest of us on the list, but as you can see she had no luck contacting the author, publishing company and so as a last resort wrote to the Library of Congress and their reply is at the bottom of this letter. Freida Subject: [IALUCAS] WOMEN OF THE WEST. Hi All: I came across a book that I had bought in Central City, Colorado many years ago. The name of it is 'Women of the West' by Silvia Anne Sheafer. With regard to copyright, I have tried to contact her and the publishers, Addison-Wesley, to ask for permission to share this book with the Lucas County, Iowa List -- but have been unable to locate Silvia and have had no response from the publishers. I did write to the Library of Congress to find out if they could help me locate Silvia, and am including the note they sent to me. If anyone can come up with a way to contact Silvia Anne Sheafer, I'd like for you to let me know.. Otherwise, I am going to share this book with the List, in segments.. Silvia Anne Sheafer has authored a number of books -- many about women's influence in history and the armed forces. The Cast of Characters in this book are: Lotta Crabtree Charlie Parkhurst Elanor Dumont Lola Montez Rosita and Dorina Emma Wixon Cassie Hill Eleanor Webber Donaldina Cameron Thanks, Nancee ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Copyright Information Date: 01/24/05 11:00:34 To: [email protected] Subject: general copyright Contacting Author re: copyright Permission to use copyrighted material must be secured directly from the owner of copyright or the owner's authorized agent.
