ELNORA WILGUS: At 4:20 o'clock Saturday afternoon, May 7, Mrs. Elnora S. Wilgus passed away at her home in this city following an illness of several weeks, the last two weeks of which she was confined to her bed. Although she had not enjoyed the best of health for many years, she had been able to do her own work since moving from the farm to this city ten years ago this spring until this last illness. Then her sister, Mrs. G. E. Livermore, helped her some each day until she felt unable to be up. Then Mrs. Livermore stayed at her home continuously until after her death. The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal church at two o'clock Monday afternoon. F. W. Spooner was the funeral director. The pastor of the church, the Rev. V. Ray Bell had charge of the services and preached the funeral sermon. The singing was by a mixed quartette composed of Ivan H. Shires, Mrs. Marshall Shettron, Mrs. Bert Ames and Bernard Brush. Mrs. Robert G. Brown was at the piano. The songs used were "Beautiful Isle," "Alseep in Jesus", and "Abide With Me." The pall bearers were Albert M. Smith, Earnest F. Morris, Charles R. Mattox, Roy L. Sweet, Harry A. Sherman and Ben F. Ailshie. Interment was made in the West Union cemetery in the lot where her mother, Mrs. Belle V. Miller, her sister Doris, and her husband Jacob Wilgus are interred. Elnora Short Miller was born January 12, 1881, near Moulton Appanoose county, Iowa, and died May 7 1938, in Sargent, Custer county, Nebraska, her age being 57 years, 3 months and 25 days. She was the oldest daughter of Ebenezer and Belle Short Miller. At the age of five years she was brought from Iowa by her parents who located on a farm near what was then the village of West Union, Custer county, Nebraska. Later the family moved to Cummings Park some miles north and west of West Union. There in the Cummings Park school district she received her common school education. In the fall of 1898 she accompanied her parents to Buffalo, Johnson county, Wyoming. Although the family returned to Nebraska in the summer of 1900, she remained at Buffalo with relatives and completed her high school course the spring of 1901, and then taught school one year. In the spring of 1902 she returned to Nebraska and joined the family who were living in Sargent. After teaching school a year in a district some miles from Sargent, she entered the normal department of the Nebraska Wesleyan University, at University Place, now a part of Lincoln, Nebraska. She finished the training school the next spring, 1904. Again she taught in rural schools, but following her mother's death in 1905, she kept house for her father and younger brother until her marriage September 29 1908, to Jacob Wilgus. The following spring they went to Powell, northwestern Wyoming, and they resided on an irrigated farm for three years. The spring of 1912 they returned to Nebraska and resided on different farms until March, 1928, when they moved to Sargent and located in the west part of town. Here on November 25, 1929, her husband died. She continued to live in the home until death claimed her May 7th, 1938. While yet a young woman she united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful and consistent member until her death. When she was a younger woman, she was quite active in church, Sunday school and Epworth League work, but owing to failing health she had been unable to attend church for a number of years. She leaves to mourn their loss two brothers Buy E. Miller of Denver, Colorado, and Arthur L. Miller of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister Mrs. Mary E. (Guy E.) Livermore of Sargent, Nebraska; a step mother, Mrs. Mary E. Miller of Long Beach California; a step daughter Mrs. Lucille (Lola) Evans of Casper, Wyoming, and other relatives and friends. Her father preceded her in death by 1 year, 4 months and 11 days, having passed away December 26, 1936. He resided at Long Beach, California, at the time of his death, having lived there for about fourteen years preceding his death. Bailey was born on May 23, 1851 in Jefferson County, New York and was therefor 59 years 4 months and 10 days old at the time of his death. The deceased was a son of Mr. Thomas J. Bailey and Mrs. Harriett C. Graves Bailey, and died October 10, 1910 in Rochester, Minnesota from cancer of the bowels. This is information on the Bailey family. Mary Mrytle Wilgus Bailey's husband. This information was researched by the Rock County Historical Society, 123 Freeman, Luverne, Minnesota 56156 and sent to Rose Dodd, . ZELORA H. BAILEY DEAD 14 OCT 1910 FUNERAL WILL BE HELD TODAY Following Operation for Cancer, Z. H. Bailey, of This City, Died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester -- Lived Here for 37 Years and Was Well Known and Highly Esteemed Throughout this Section Zelora H. Bailey, for thirty-seven years a resident of Rock county, passed away Monday at St. Mary's hospital at Rochester, this state, where he had undergone an operation a week previous for a cancerous growth of the bowels. For a few days after the operation was performed Mr. Bailey's condition seemed quite favorable, but the latter part of last week it was found necessary to perform a second operation and after this his condition gradually grew worse until the end came. His relatives, however, were not notified of the near approach of death until Tuesday, when a card was received stating that his condition was worse and requesting his sister, Mrs. B. S. Bullis, to come at once. Mrs. Bullis left on the Tuesday noon passenger, reaching Rochester that night and found that her brother had been dead for nearly tweny hours. She notified C. A Reynolds, who went to Rochester Wednesday to accompany the remains to this city, reaching here last evening. The deceased was a son of Mrs. and Mrs. T. J. Bailey, and was born on May 23, 1851, in Jefferson county, New York, and was therefor 59 years 4 months and 10 days old at the time of his death. When two years old he moved with his parents to Dodge county, Wis., where they lived until 1855, when the family moved to Winona county, this state, where they continued to reside until 1873, when they came to this county and the deceased had since made his home here. He is survived by his aged mother, Mrs. Harriett Bailey, of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. (Eliza Jane) B. S. Bullis, of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. (Alda E.) D. C. VanUfford, of Meade county, S. D., and Mrs. J(Alice) C. J. Ronald, of Clear Lake. S. D. For a number of years Mr. Bailey had devoted his time to truck gardening and poultry raising and just a few weeks ago had sold his home on East Warren street, purchased a residence in Ashcreek and had made arrangements to have it moved to his four-acre tract of land on South Freeman avenue, and was happy in the thought that he was soon to have a home after his heart's desire, where his mother and him could spend their remaining years. But about three weeks ago a suspicion of the character of the ailment with which he had been suffering for more than a year and a half entered his mind and he underwent an examination the next day that proved his suspicions were only too well founded. Realizing the necessity and also the seriousness of the operation and believing that in his weakened condition he would not be able to withstand the operation, he closed up his affairs so far as possible and before going to Rochester made ample provision for his mother as long as she may live. "Lora," as he was familiarly called by his host of friends, was of quiet and unassuming nature and a man that the more intimately acquainted a person became with him the more he was respected, and all his friends feel that in his death they have sustained a personal loss. One of the things that stands out as a monument to his life is the way he took care of his parents in their declining years, and since the death of his father on the 12th of February 1898, the devotion and tender care he showered upon his mother, who is 91 years old, was beautiful to behold. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Baptist church, and interment will be made in Maplewood beside the decease's father. I am not sure how Mary Mrytle Wilgus and Zelora H. Bailey met. Zelora H. Bailey left Mary before May Bell Bailey was born. Her brother John Wilgus stayed with us and helped Mary raise the kids. (May Belle made a statement that "I don't remember every seeing my Dad, but Jesse had a picture of him and her kids sent it to me after she died.)
