Well it has only been 4 days since the last update, but felt I couldn't wait any longer with this one as it has 141 NEW entries, plus the major correction I discovered yesterday. There was also several additions to the Samuel Jobe_ Dorcas MacKay group - though at the moment I can't remember what they were. Know some concerned the Claybourne P. 'Clay' 'Claborn' Jobe and Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Jennings descendants who married December 17, 1889 Miami Co., Kansas. The new information from the West Virginia vitals is also now included. http://wc.rootsweb.com/~ajobebrown Unless someone else comes in - back to the albums. >grin< Ann
Well Randy, I did have good intentions this morning - getting yours and Freidas transfers made and index pages revised. I got Freida's done and then the link for the West Virginia site came in and knowing me - you can guess what happened. I Just sent Randy, Earl and Eleanor a letter with an attachment - off list. If anyone else is interested in it - let me know. It will be on the next update of Jobe Legacy. One MAJOR correction - William Jobe, son of John Jobe and Priscillia Young, did have a son, who married Martha Chaffin and appear on the 1880 Lawrence Co., KY census did have a son, Thomas, age 8 on that census. However, he is not the Thomas who married Rachel Susan Midkiff and lived in Cabell Co., West Virginia. This Thomas Jobe from all indications was born February 23, 1859 Ohio with his father being born in Pennsylvania. His death certificate lists his father as Samuel F. Jobe and his mother as Lueanna Rogers. We're lucky in that There is also a death certificate for Samuel F. Jobe who died October 14, 1889 Cabell Co., West Virginia. This Samuel was a blacksmith and was born in Brooks, VA. He was 63 when he died. His wife is listed as Luanna. His father is listed as Jacob and his mother as Anna. This therefore makes this Samuel F. Jobe the son of Jacob W. Job and Nancy Ann Fetrow and a brother to William T. Jobe who married Fannie Hurst. 1880 -Cabell Co., West Virginia, Huntington Samuel JOB Self M Male W 56 PA Blacksmith PA PA Louana JOB Wife M Female W 48 VA Keeps House VA VA William JOB Son S Male W 24 OH Printer PA VA Charles JOB Son S Male W 22 OH Cooper PA VA Thos. Jobe and he did not marry. He lived with his brother Thomas in the later census records. His death record lists his parents as Samuel Jobe and Lorianna Rogers. Now from the 1880 census above, I still don't know what happened to the sons, Charles and Carlos? (you want to make ann attempt at reading this - let me know and I'll send you the actual). Ancestry transcribed both sons as Charles, but the 2nd one isn't Charles. Also, not sure yet what happened to Mary and Hattie. Anyone have any ideas or discover more form the WV site - keep me posted. Also, the WV site does have a great deal for many who did come from the Lawrence Co., KY group. *Can't wait for the update and want the information now - just let me know. Ann (Jobe) Brown

*Forwarding, (still more information for this group) Angeline was great granddaughter of Elizabeth (Jobe) Leath. Elizabeth was a sister to my Samuel Jobe and Randy's Nathan Job. ----- Original Message ----- From: CLARKBeep@aol.com To: ann@personainternet.com Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2007 12:34 PM Subject: SARAH, JENNIE, WILLIAM, HENRY WILGUS INFORMATION SARAH ELIZABETH WILGUS BRUSH: Sarah Elizabeth Wilgus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Wilgus, was born in Illinois, March 20, 1864. She spent her childhood in Illinois and then moved with her parents to Iowa where she met and married Walter J. Brush on December 5, 1880. They lived in Iowa, where their children were born, until the year 1893, when they came to Custer County, Nebraska, and located on a farm seven miles northeast of Sargent and lived there for ten years. Then in the year 1903 they moved to Sargent where Mr. Brush engaged in the dray business. After a few years they leased the Dr. Fenstermacher hospital which they operated for several years and until the time of Mr. Brush's death, March 1, 1916. Following his death Mrs. Brush continued to operate the hospital for a short time. Some time afterwards she entered the Odd Fellows' and Rebekahs' home for aged people at York, Nebraska, and remained there awhile and then came back to Sargent and lived for some years. Mr. and Mrs. Brush were the parents of four children: John William Brush, who passed away when still a young man on September 12, 1913; Oscar Samuel Brush of Crawford, Nebraska; Roy Brush of Sargent, Nebraska; and Alice Phebe Mattox of Marsing, Idaho. Mrs. Brush had been in failing health for several years and while on a visit with her son Oscar Brush and family at Crawford, Nebraska, took seriously ill and passed away at a nursing home there on March 29, 1945; at the age of 81 years and 9 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, several brothers and sisters, her husband and one son. Interment was made in the Sargent (Mount Hope)Cemetery by the side of her husband who preceded here in death twenty nine years. In attendance at her funeral from away were her son Oscar Brush and wife of Crawford, Nebraska; her only daughter, Mrs. Alice (Ed) Mattox of Marsing, Idaho; her niece Mrs. Lucille, (Lola) Evans of Casper, Wyoming, Mrs. Evans being the only daughter of Mrs. Brush's brother Jacob Wilgus deceased; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Brush of Grand Island, Nebraska, Harold Brush being the older of the two sons of Mrs. Brush's son Roy Brush and wife of Sargent, Nebraska; Mrs. Roy Dare of the vicinity of Gates, Nebraska; and Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Welch of Crawford, Nebraska. WALTER J. BRUSH: Walter J. Brush was born in Illinois Nove 25, 1850 and died at his home in Sargent, Nebr., March 1st. 1916, aged 65 years, three months and five days, neuralgia of the heart, is believed to have been the cause of his demise. While still in tender years, with his parents, he removed from Illinois to Clinton county, Iowa in 1858. Eight years were spent there, removing to Tama County, Iowa. Here on Dec. 4, 1880 he was united in marriage to Sarah E. Wilgus. In the spring of 1893 he removed to Custer county, locating on a farm until the spring of 1903 when he removed to Sargent. To this union were born four children -- John William, who died about two years ago, Oscar Samuel, living at Alliance, Nebr., Roy and Alice Phoebe Mattox, both of this city, who with the wife are left to mourn his sudden death. Also one sister, Mrs. Emma Bradshaw, Toledo, Iowa, and three brothers, O. W. Brush, Gladbrook, Iowa; C C. Brush, Pipestone, Minn., and J. W. Brush, Cedar Rapids, Iowa survive. Mr. Brush united with the U. B. church at Garwin, Iowa, April 1893 and transferred to the Methodist church at Sargent, of which he was a member when the final summons came. The funeral and services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M.E. Church and the remains tenderly borne to Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rev.. e. h. Maynard conducting the services. All members of the family were present at the last obsequies, including one brother O. W. Brush JOHN WILLIAM BRUSH; Following an illiness of less than two months duration, John W. Brush died at the local hospital at 1:00 o'clock Friday morning from diabetes. Two months ago no one would have sumised that he was afflicted with a fatal malady. Monday prior to his death, he grew worse and all efforts of the family physical were of no avail. The disease had stealthly obtained a foothold that his system was unable to withstand its ravages. During the past five years he was engaged in the dray business in this city and only last August disposed unto his brother on account of failing health. His nice little home and other property he traded for stock and a crop in the field in Antelope valley Sept. lst he moved out there. One week later he grew worse and came to the hospital with hopes that a rest and care by his mother might restore him to strength and health. But the fate of the one who rules the universe did not will it so, and from the time began to leave him rapidly. Wednesday and Thursday his death was expected momentarily. Surrounded by he entered the hospital his strength the grief striken wife, father and sister, he became extict at midnight, mother, two brothers and the only Friday. The deceased was a member of the volunteer firemen, who turned out in a body and acted as escort to the procession as it lead Ks Way from the home of his parents to the church. Six members of the department were pall bearers. The deceased was thirty one years of age. The funeral was held from the M. E. church Sunday at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. H. Maynard, after which the body was tenderly borne to the Sargent cemetery and placed in a cement vault. The church was filled with sorrowing friends and those who came to pay the departed one their respects. 1900 Federal Census Nebraska Custer County, Sargent Township Roll: T623 921; Page: 15B, Enumeration District: 73 BRUSH, Walter J. W. YARDS Switchman Killed in Unknown Manner, Early Saturday Morning, Body Dragged to C. G. W. Crossing. Roy Peach lost his life while on duty as switch crew foreman in the Northwestern yards here early Saturday morning. The cause, or exact manner of his death is unknown and probably never will be ascertained. He had been working with the regular switching crew which consisted of Mr. Peach as foreman and Switchmen C. A. Hall and L. Van Deelen. They had delivered a car of merchandise to the freight house and had gone back to the yard office in the west yards. They were waiting at the yard office for the early morning southbound freight No. 324, to pull out. After the train had gone and as they were about to resume their work, Mr. Peach's absence was discovered. After waiting for a few minutes for him to show up, they started out to look for him. The crew thought perhaps he had ridden down to the freight house or to the dispatcher's office on the freight. As they neared the freight house switch, they found his overshoe, and one of his legs by the side of the track, a littler further along. they continued their search and his body was found lodged against the rails at the Great Western Crossing near the tower house. The tower house is at least, half a mile from the place where Peach's leg was found and a mile from the yard office where he was last seen alive. There was plenty of evidence of Mr. Peach's body having been dragged along between the rails in the cinders and gravel on the road bed. There was no evidence whatever found on the freight train which was examined at Webster City of the tragic accident in which it has been involved. Coroner Walker and the Northwester claim agent decided an inquest was unnecessary. The remains were taken to the Kubitschek & Kastler undertaking parlor. Blurred section of newspaper. The widow and two sons survive in addition to Mr. Peach's mother, Mrs. H. Waddell of Los Angeles. Obituary Roy Peach, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Peach, was born at Beaman, Iowa, Feb. 7, 1886, and died Dec. 14, 1929, aged 43 years, 10 months and seven days. He was married to Miss Catherine McClain, Oct. 12,, 1909 at Hawarden, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union. Raymond, who is in the navy, stationed at New York City, and Robert. *Forwarding, Angeline was great granddaughter of Elizabeth (Jobe) Leath. Elizabeth was a sister to my Samuel Jobe and Randy's Nathan Job. ----- Original Message ----- From: CLARKBeep@aol.com To: ann@personainternet.com Sent: Saturday, November 24, 2007 12:23 PM Subject: More Information on the Wilgus Family DEATH COMES TO MRS. ELNORA WILGUS: At 4:20 o'clock Saturday afternoon, May 7, Mrs. Elnora S. Wilgus passed away at her home in this city following an illness of several weeks, the last two weeks of which she was confined to her bed. Although she had not enjoyed the best of health for many years, she had been able to do her own work since moving from the farm to this city ten years ago this spring until this last illness. Then her sister, Mrs. G. E. Livermore, helped her some each day until she felt unable to be up. Then Mrs. Livermore stayed at her home continuously until after her death. The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal church at two o'clock Monday afternoon. F. W. Spooner was the funeral director. The pastor of the church, the Rev. V. Ray Bell had charge of the services and preached the funeral sermon. The singing was by a mixed quartette composed of Ivan H. Shires, Mrs. Marshall Shettron, Mrs. Bert Ames and Bernard Brush. Mrs. Robert G. Brown was at the piano. The songs used were "Beautiful Isle," "Alseep in Jesus", and "Abide With Me." The pall bearers were Albert M. Smith, Earnest F. Morris, Charles R. Mattox, Roy L. Sweet, Harry A. Sherman and Ben F. Ailshie. Interment was made in the West Union cemetery in the lot where her mother, Mrs. Belle V. Miller, her sister Doris, and her husband Jacob Wilgus are interred. Elnora Short Miller was born January 12, 1881, near Moulton Appanoose county, Iowa, and died May 7 1938, in Sargent, Custer county, Nebraska, her age being 57 years, 3 months and 25 days. She was the oldest daughter of Ebenezer and Belle Short Miller. At the age of five years she was brought from Iowa by her parents who located on a farm near what was then the village of West Union, Custer county, Nebraska. Later the family moved to Cummings Park some miles north and west of West Union. There in the Cummings Park school district she received her common school education. In the fall of 1898 she accompanied her parents to Buffalo, Johnson county, Wyoming. Although the family returned to Nebraska in the summer of 1900, she remained at Buffalo with relatives and completed her high school course the spring of 1901, and then taught school one year. In the spring of 1902 she returned to Nebraska and joined the family who were living in Sargent. After teaching school a year in a district some miles from Sargent, she entered the normal department of the Nebraska Wesleyan University, at University Place, now a part of Lincoln, Nebraska. She finished the training school the next spring, 1904. Again she taught in rural schools, but following her mother's death in 1905, she kept house for her father and younger brother until her marriage September 29 1908, to Jacob Wilgus. The following spring they went to Powell, northwestern Wyoming, and they resided on an irrigated farm for three years. The spring of 1912 they returned to Nebraska and resided on different farms until March, 1928, when they moved to Sargent and located in the west part of town. Here on November 25, 1929, her husband died. She continued to live in the home until death claimed her May 7th, 1938. While yet a young woman she united with the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a faithful and consistent member until her death. When she was a younger woman, she was quite active in church, Sunday school and Epworth League work, but owing to failing health she had been unable to attend church for a number of years. She leaves to mourn their loss two brothers Buy E. Miller of Denver, Colorado, and Arthur L. Miller of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister Mrs. Mary E. (Guy E.) Livermore of Sargent, Nebraska; a step mother, Mrs. Mary E. Miller of Long Beach California; a step daughter Mrs. Lucille (Lola) Evans of Casper, Wyoming, and other relatives and friends. Her father preceded her in death by 1 year, 4 months and 11 days, having passed away December 26, 1936. He resided at Long Beach, California, at the time of his death, having lived there for about fourteen years preceding his death. MARY MRYTLE WILGUS BAILEY; Mary Mrytle Wilgus Bailey was born Feb 14, 1865 in Illinois and died July 27, 1940 in Glendive, Dawson County, Montana of Coronary Occulsion, Hypertension, Arterial Selerosis. Death Certificate Gld. 1494. The informant on Mary Bailey's death certificate was Ty Myers, Mary's Bailey's son-in-law. Mother and Father were marked Unknown. Birth in Missouri, Widowed. Spouse listed as Laurance. In all the paperwork that I have come across Mary Bailey listed herself as a widow. But I Found Zelora H. Bailey living with his mother Harriett Bailey in the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census in Luverene, Rock County, Minnesota. Zelora (Lora) H. Bailey was born on May 23, 1851 in Jefferson County, New York and was therefor 59 years 4 months and 10 days old at the time of his death. The deceased was a son of Mr. Thomas J. Bailey and Mrs. Harriett C. Graves Bailey, and died October 10, 1910 in Rochester, Minnesota from cancer of the bowels. This is information on the Bailey family. Mary Mrytle Wilgus Bailey's husband. This information was researched by the Rock County Historical Society, 123 Freeman, Luverne, Minnesota 56156 and sent to Rose Dodd, . ZELORA H. BAILEY DEAD 14 OCT 1910 FUNERAL WILL BE HELD TODAY Following Operation for Cancer, Z. H. Bailey, of This City, Died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester -- Lived Here for 37 Years and Was Well Known and Highly Esteemed Throughout this Section Zelora H. Bailey, for thirty-seven years a resident of Rock county, passed away Monday at St. Mary's hospital at Rochester, this state, where he had undergone an operation a week previous for a cancerous growth of the bowels. For a few days after the operation was performed Mr. Bailey's condition seemed quite favorable, but the latter part of last week it was found necessary to perform a second operation and after this his condition gradually grew worse until the end came. His relatives, however, were not notified of the near approach of death until Tuesday, when a card was received stating that his condition was worse and requesting his sister, Mrs. B. S. Bullis, to come at once. Mrs. Bullis left on the Tuesday noon passenger, reaching Rochester that night and found that her brother had been dead for nearly tweny hours. She notified C. A Reynolds, who went to Rochester Wednesday to accompany the remains to this city, reaching here last evening. The deceased was a son of Mrs. and Mrs. T. J. Bailey, and was born on May 23, 1851, in Jefferson county, New York, and was therefor 59 years 4 months and 10 days old at the time of his death. When two years old he moved with his parents to Dodge county, Wis., where they lived until 1855, when the family moved to Winona county, this state, where they continued to reside until 1873, when they came to this county and the deceased had since made his home here. He is survived by his aged mother, Mrs. Harriett Bailey, of this city, and three sisters, Mrs. (Eliza Jane) B. S. Bullis, of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. (Alda E.) D. C. VanUfford, of Meade county, S. D., and Mrs. J(Alice) C. J. Ronald, of Clear Lake. S. D. For a number of years Mr. Bailey had devoted his time to truck gardening and poultry raising and just a few weeks ago had sold his home on East Warren street, purchased a residence in Ashcreek and had made arrangements to have it moved to his four-acre tract of land on South Freeman avenue, and was happy in the thought that he was soon to have a home after his heart's desire, where his mother and him could spend their remaining years. But about three weeks ago a suspicion of the character of the ailment with which he had been suffering for more than a year and a half entered his mind and he underwent an examination the next day that proved his suspicions were only too well founded. Realizing the necessity and also the seriousness of the operation and believing that in his weakened condition he would not be able to withstand the operation, he closed up his affairs so far as possible and before going to Rochester made ample provision for his mother as long as she may live. "Lora," as he was familiarly called by his host of friends, was of quiet and unassuming nature and a man that the more intimately acquainted a person became with him the more he was respected, and all his friends feel that in his death they have sustained a personal loss. One of the things that stands out as a monument to his life is the way he took care of his parents in their declining years, and since the death of his father on the 12th of February 1898, the devotion and tender care he showered upon his mother, who is 91 years old, was beautiful to behold. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Baptist church, and interment will be made in Maplewood beside the decease's father. I am not sure how Mary Mrytle Wilgus and Zelora H. Bailey met. Zelora H. Bailey left Mary before May Bell Bailey was born. Her brother John Wilgus stayed with us and helped Mary raise the kids. (May Belle made a statement that "I don't remember every seeing my Dad, but Jesse had a picture of him and her kids sent it to me after she died.)
