When you find information - NEVER assume that I already have it. Just recently I had an obituary sent to me that answers quite a few questions and finally explains who the Jobe family is that went to Coriscana, Navarro Co., Texas and now living in Austin, Texas. From another source, I know his name was Arle Taylor 'Pop' Jobe and that he died Aug 25, 1985 Gladwater, Gregg Co., Texas. The son, Gene Jobe, is Alton Eugene Jobe and he was born Aug 1, 1927 and died March 7, 1998 and married to Mary Suzanne White. Their son is a well-known doctor/surgeon in Austin, Texas and his son is know for his athletic abilities. ------ 1985 -Obituary "A T 'Pop' Jobe Gladewater -- Graveside services for A T 'Pop' Jobe, 83, of Gladewater were held 11 a m Monday at Gladewater Memorial Park with the Rev Nick Sholars officiating with Stone - Goodwin funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mr Jobe died Sunday morning in a Gladewater hospital after a lengthy illness. Born July 11, 1902, in Prescott, Ark, Mr Jobe lived in Gladewater since 1934. He graduated from the Little Rock, Ark School of Pharmacy in 1923 and later owned and operated pharmacies in Conway, Ark, and Celina, Karnack and Longview, before moving to Gladewater where he operated the Ritz Pharmacy until he retired 1966. Survivors include his wife, Laura Hunt Jobe; two sons, Taylor of Gladewater and Gene of Corsicana; two brothers, Finis of Centralia, Ill, and Henry of Dallas; two sisters, Vanah Avery of Prescott, Ark, and Myrt Sherrill of Houston; six grandchildren; and five great - grandchildren."

As I read of the many on this & other lists who have become frustrated by being unable to find the burial sites of their ancestors, family members, or others, despite many hours of researching & walking of cemeteries; I would like to point out another possibility which few, if any, consider...that being cremation. Cremation is not a new concept as the disposing of human bodies on a funeral pyre -usually one body at a time-dates back in America, at least, to Colonial times. Most of us have read of the; albeit horrific; body pyres that were utilized, usually after the biggest of the battles of the Civil War, to dispose of the often thousands of bodies which accumulated as a result of the fighting. This was done out of necessity as the digging of individual, or even mass graves, was out of the question due to lack of manpower. However, the most compelling reason to dispose of the bodies as quickly as possible was to prevent the spread of disease which was rampant at the time. Very few probably realize that of the 250,000-300,000 men of the Confederate Army who died during the war, only one quarter of those deaths were incurred in battle, with the remainder dying of disease. Union Army deaths due to disease were somewhat lesser due to the availabilty of more sophisicated medicines & techniques. Several years after the War the crematory furnace was developed & many funeral establishments had them installed in their facilities leading to the wider useage of this method. I recently spent the better part of a year attempting to find the burial places of an ancestor, a CW veteran, & his wife who both died in Chicago, without success. A search of the cemeteries in & around Chicago & of the National Cemeteries yielded no results either. In speaking later with a member of the branch of the family to which the deceased belonged, I learned that cremation was literally a tradition in that branch, & I was told of a scattering of ashes at sea & in various cemeteries in several states. Thus, after a period of 100 years have elapsed since the death of these two people, & with not finding any evidence of cemetery burials, I must 'assume' that even without any proof, that they were cremated. Also with many families not having the funds to purchase a cemetery plot, a gravestone, & other costs associated with a funeral, cremation was no doubt a lower cost alternative. Also, as the ashes are usually placed in an urn, rather than scattering the ashes, the urn! s could be kept at home, where the family members could feel that the deceased was "always close by." What might have happened to the urns throughout the ensuing years might well be "Another story." To those who might feel like they are 'chasing their tail' in attempting to find where their family member's remains are; this just may be another consideration to keep in mind. There's no gate, no entrance, just a few fieldstones and one legible marker. I know this will be a lost battle, as I've seen a much larger cemetery moved because of progress.     3. Donna, Was trying to find out more about this Sarah - so far nothing. However, I did find out some information about this Ellis B. Ingle who is listed with the family in 1880. He married Isabella Keen (Feb 24, 1853 - Aug 24, 1918 TN). She was d/o Terry White Keen and Mary 'Polly' Hale. Terry White Keen was s/o Elijah Keen and Rosanna White. Mary 'Polly' Hale was d/o Lewis Hale and Elizabeth Bragg. By the way, Elizabeth (Bargg) Hale was d/o David Bragg and Elizabeth ? and gd/o Thomas Bragg and Elizabeth MacKAY. For those who may not relaize it, Elizabeth (MacKay) Bragg was a sister to Margaret (MacKay) Job, Zachariah Mackay (father of Dorcas and Deborah MacKay Job), Robert MacKay Jr (husband of Patience Job), Leah MacKay (who married Ephriam Leath and Ephriam Leath was the 2nd husband of Barbary Unknown, widow of Caleb Job), Elizabeth (MacKay) - wife of Abraham Job, Moses MacKay who married Mary Job (d/o Abraham Job and Sarah Gatchell). Ellis B. and Isabelle 'Belle' can be found on the 1900 Sullivan Co., TN, District 15. Next door to him, there is a James H. Jones family (married to Malinda E. Jackson) and his mother-in-law, Louiza? Jackson born Jan 1844 TN is with them. And next to them are lots of Ferguson and Cox families.     3. These folks appear to be waging a successful fight against developers...you could ask them for advice. Also...don't give up on the house. Have it designated a Historic Landmark. Negotiate with the developers to move it to a safe place...of your choosing, not theirs. Judy received several calls from the Dare Board of Commissioners that they too were upset over this situation and was in favor of the family. Judy called Catherine Kozak [?], a writer for the Virginian Pilot on Monday and we met with her graveside on Tuesday at 10:30 am to inform her what was going on. Wednesday, the staff photographer called for us to meet with him... it was about 6:00 pm and he took some photos of the gravesite. Today, Catherine called to inform us that the article will appear in the Virginian Pilot on Sunday. We failed to ask if it would appear in the Virginian Pilot itself or the North Carolina Section of the Virginian Pilot... so keep your eyes open for the article. Judy and I spent Wednesday from early morning til late afternoon at the Currituck County Courthouse looking up Wills; and, the Dare County Courthouse looking up Wills, Deeds, and mapping. By Thursday we were at the Southern Shores Municipal Building and back to Dare County Courthouse with the Register of Deeds and Mapping. It appears that although the cemetery is not mentioned in the actual property transfers [Deeds], the maps are always mentioned. We copied most of what we thought to be important. Later, the mapping department for Dare County suggested that we have one map certified.... it appears that the Land Surveyor lied, had a map Notarized that was not accurate... but, once recorded, even if it is in error, it is valid. Today, Judy received calls from the Board of Commissioners stating that it is suggested that it would be beneficial for ALL members of the family to show up at the May 15 Board of Commissioners' meeting. She was told that the Board of Commissioners' meeting will be open to the public for discussion of the disinterment and removal of Willis Gallop and his wife Mary from Martin's Point. WE HOPE ANYONE THAT CAN ATTEND, WILL ATTNED !!!! Please send an email to: b2b@visi.net if you will be able to attend; otherwise, I am requesting that you draft a letter of your disapproval and outrage to the Dare County Board of Commissioners and forward it to me... for anyone who cannot attend, I will voice your opinion at the meeting on May 15. I just learned yesterday that the cemetery where he's buried is on a piece of property that has been sold to the city of Kingsport. Ann, Lottie, Randy....it's the one that I showed you when you were here. They are planning to begin building homes on the property, 450 of them....price range $250,000 to $300,000 each. At this point, I'm not sure what the course of action is. There is also a home on the property that the Jones descendants believe was built before 1800. I went there today and took some photos of the brick chimney (hand-made bricks) and some parts of the old structure that was visible under all the remodeling. I'm sure that there's probably no way we can save the home, but the cemetery is protected by law. I'm doing a bit more research and hope to get an article in the local newspaper about the house and cemetery to draw attention to them. I'll keep you posted. It might be a goo! d idea if those of you who are Richardson Jobe descendants would send me an e-mail and let me know who you are. Of course, there was Andersonville, but there was also Camp Douglas in Chicago, where many Southerners gave their lives from the cold, neglect, etc. The historians say this was equal in its horror to Andersonville -- I don't know. There may be some Jobe's there. My Southern ancestors were captured in Tenn and taken to this camp. They died and were buried in the Confederate Mound.
