Part 1: Descendants of Robert Jennings Generation No. 1 1. ROBERT1 JENNINGS He married CATHERINE SALLEE1. Notes for ROBERT JENNINGS: The exact date and place of birth of Robert Jennings, Sr. is unknown at this time. It is said he was born in Maryland; that he came into Virginia (place not stated), then into Rowan County, North Carolina. The date of his removal from Virginia to North Carolina is fixed in the minds of his descendants as 1767, since his son, Jacob, was born shortly before he moved. Some of the descendants of Robert Jennings, Sr. resided in Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky. They state he came to Kentucky from "Yadkin Valley" in North Carolina. It is also said that he went from North Carolina to Tennessee, and then into Kentucky. Robert Jennings first appears in the records of Rowan County, North Carolina in 1783, the date he had a land grant. The records indicate his petition for land was entered in 1779; "Robert Jennings, 300 acres in Rowan County on October 10, 1783, entered on December 25, 1779, on the waters of Dicas Creek adjoining George Reed. (North Carolina: Land Grants, Secretary of State: Book 51-67) Thomas Read, with no dower signs a deed to George Reed both of Rowan County, North Carolina on May 5, 1794, tract of 100 acres on Beaver Dam and Dicas Creek next to John Hollis, George Reed, and Robert Jinnings, original grant to George Read now deceased by sale on November 4, 1784 and he willed it to the said Thomas Read. The land adjoining Henry Sloan laid just across the present highway bridge over the Yadkin River, seven miles Northeast of Salisbury. The cemetery is located in a field in sight of the old home of his son, Isaiah Jennings. The inscription on his tombstone is worn, and only the following can be deciphered: Rober ___8 (Evidently part of the year of his death, 1828) August 8, 1828: Articles of Agreement made and entered between Catherine Jennings of the one part of and John Jennings, Isaiah Jennings, and Jonathon Hathman, executors of Robert Jennings, deceased, all of Madison County, Kentucky, Whereas we the said John Ginnings, Isiah Ginnings, and Jonathan Heathman this day hath bought of the above named Catherine Ginnings the 1/3 part of Robert Ginnings Estate which was willed to said Catherine by her deceased husband for which we the undersigned are heirs. When Robert Jennings, Sr. died three of his children were living in Madison County, Kentucky. They were John Jennings, Isaiah Jennings, and Sally Jennings wife of Johathan Heathman. The other children were residing in Tennessee and one in Illinois. The sons of Robert Jennings, Sr. seemed to have visitied Madison County, Kentucky in chain-fashion. William Jennings and Jacob Jennings were residing in Kentucky in 1792/93. They returned to Tennessee after their father moved to Kentucky and resided in Statesville District, Wilson County, Tennessee. Notes for CATHERINE SALLEE: Catherine Jennings, the mother, went to live with her son, Isaiah Jennings, and she appears in his household in the 1830 U.S. Census, Madison County, Kentucky, age 80 to 90. UNKNOWN. Notes for JOHN "GENTLEMAN JOHN" JENNINGS: His birth date is between 1782 and 1785. John settled on Smith's Fork in Wilson County, Tennessee. In addition to "Gentleman John", there were three grandsons of William Jennings who were designated as follows: "Big John", "Little John", and "Short John". The "Trist Wood Papers" (See Notes under William Carroll Jennings) lists R. L. Jennings Born 1867 and Died 1913. His name was Robert Lee Jennings, Jr. as a son of "Gentleman John". I would think that this was a grandson or great-grandson of "Gentleman John" (possibly raised as a son) and not his son. "Gentleman John" would have been approximately 80 years old at his birth. There were more children than the ones listed in this program but they their names are unknown to the compiler. iii. ROBERT CROSS JENNINGS1, b. 1783.
