Re: Connecting lines of SALLIS - poss. SALLEY/SALLEE - CATLETT - DONIPHAN/DONOVAN - PARTRIDGE - (COLCLOUGH) - KELLY - (RANSDELL) - JENNINGS - MOORE/MORE - (EDRINGTON) - WILLOUGHBY - PAYNE - ROBINSON - JORDAN - BAILEY? - PARKER - SYMONS - HALE(S) - BENNETT - HOLBROOK/HOLDBROOKE - PATTISON - (CONYERS) - WILCOXSON/WILLCOCKSON - EARLE - WILLIAMS - BILLINGTON - WILLIAMS - PEMBERTON - ELLZEY - COLLINS? - COPELAND - TUCKER - LANE - HOWELL - (FIELDING) - LEWIS - WARNER - READE - TOWNELEY - MERIWETHER and in addition to sending this to the various lists involved I am sending it to a few of the individuals/cousins and researchers that I have been working closely with regarding these names. Hello, This post covers a good deal of info that I have and that I am looking for but one of the specifics that I am searching for is regarding my paternal 5th great grandfather: Edward Salley JENNINGS, Sr., born: 1720 in Richmond Co., Virginia and how his middle name of SALLEY might actually be connected with the name of SALLIS, (which may have been pronounced SAL - LEE, especially if this SALLIS family from England was originally of French descent as suggested by the spelling and, perhaps, was d' SALLIS/de SALLIS back in the 1066 period in Normandy if they were involved with William, I, "The Conqueror," King of England as most of the other familiy lines that are connected were. Edward Salley JENNINGS, Sr.'s grandmother was Amy DONIPHAN whose brother, Alexander DONIPHAN, Jr., married Sarah SALLIS, daughter of Samuell SALLIS and Sarah CATLETT, aka Mrs. Sarah CATLETT TALIAFERRO SALLIS SHORT, after 1st marriage to Robert TALIAFERRO, 2nd marriage to Samuell SALLIS and her 3rd marriage to Samuell SHORT. Please bear me with me for a few minutes here as this will take a bit of explaining in detail some of these connections which may be already know by some of you but some of which are very new to me and I am trying to find out more about how they do connect. I am looking to find more information on the Sarah SALLIS who married Alexander DONIPHAN, Jr., son of (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN, Sr., born: abt. 1640 in Plymouth, Devonshire, England, and 1st wife, Amy/Amie PARTRIDGE, sister of Samuell PARTRIDGE and her 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary PARTRIDGE COLCLOUGH, (wife possibly of either John?/George? or Benjamin? COLCLOUGH,) Mrs. Sarah PARTRIDGE WILSON, (wife of Richard WILSON,) and sister, Mrs. Elizabeth PARTRIDGE YOUNG, (recently saw that her husband's name may have been Bernard YOUNG,) and then the 4th sister was Mrs. Amy PARTRIDGE DONIPHAN, wife of (Captain) Alexander PARTRIDGE DONIPHAN. This family connects with these names in Gloucester (aka Gloster sometimes,) Co., VA in 1678: Thomas AMIES Edward PARKER Roger SHACKLEFORD/SHAKLEFORD Robert BEVERLY William NORMAN Thomas HANCKS/HAUCKS The aforementioned (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN, Sr. married 1st wife, Amie/Amy PARTRIDGE, (ancestral grandparents of (Colonel) William B. TRAVIS of Alamo acclaim descends and I suspect that his descent, said to be from a TRAVERS line, is most likely from, but don't know for sure, the Raleigh TRAVERS who was a neighbor of John PAYNE and John JENNINGS in Rappahannock, VA, I believe, or, perhaps he was a neighbor in England or both,) and then (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN's 2nd wife was Margaret MOTT, (they are the ancestral grandparents of (President) Harry S. TRUMAN,) and then (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN's wife was Susannah ? Regarding the aforementioned, Thomas AMIES, and there may no connection whatsoever but the spelling of A-M-I-E that I have also seen used for the aforementioned Amie/Amy PARTRIDGE, who married (Captain) Alexander DONIPHAN, makes me curious as to whether or not there might be an AMIES family connection for this PARTRIDGE family and connected somehow to Thomas AMIES. Also, I am curious as to whether or not this Edward PARKER might connect to my PARKER lineage that is so missing. My paternal 2nd great grandfather, Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER, born: 1795 in Maryland, parents: ??/names unknown, married into this DONIPHAN - KELLY - JENNINGS - EARLE, etc. lineage shown below that connects in one way or another to these other surnames mentioned. This Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER does not surface again until 1830 in the Copiah County, MS census and his 2nd/3rd wife, Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS, born: 1821/22 in Covington Co., MS or Alabama, descends from the EARLE, WILLIAMS, JENNINGS - KELLY - DONIPHAN, etc. mentioned herein. According to the information that I recently seen: Sarah SALLIS was the daughter of Samuell SALLIS and Mrs. Sarah CATLETT TALIAFERRO, (daughter of (Colonel) John CATLETT and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth UNDERWOOD TAYLOR? SLAUGHTER CATLETT,) and Mrs. Sarah CATLETT TALIAFERRO married as her 1st husband, Robert TALIAFERRO, (son of Sarah GRYMES and Robert TALIAFERRO,) and then Mrs. Sarah CATLETT TALIAFERRO married 2nd husband, Samuel(l) SALLIS, and then married 3rd husband, Samuel(l) SHORT. Sarah CATLETT's sister, Elizabeth CATLETT, married Francis TALIAFERRO, brother of the aforementioned Robert TALIAFERRO. (Colonel) John CATLETT, born: March 1625/26 at Canterbury, Kent, England, (son of John CATLETT and Sarah HAWKINS,) md: wife # 1: ? LUCAS then (Colonel) John CATLETT md: bef. 06 Jan 1654 to wife # 2: Mrs. Elizabeth UNDERWOOD TAYLOR SLAUGHTER, daughter of (Captain) William UNDERWOOD, (of Isle of Wight and Lancaster Co.'s, VA,) and wife, Margaret ?. before January 06, 1654. (I am also searching to find out if my ancestors from Anson and Edgecombe Counties, North Carolina in the early 1700's Thomas (1) UNDERWOOD, Thomas (2) UNDERWOOD and his son, Jacob UNDERWOOD, are descendants of this (Captain) William UNDERWOOD. And Mrs. Elizabeth UNDERWOOD TAYLOR SLAUGHTER, at the time she married (Colonel) John CATLETT, was the ex-wife of husband # 1: Dr. James TAYLOR and the widow of husband # 2: (Captain) Francis SLAUGHTER, according to my understanding. And (Captain) Francis SLAUGHTER is believed to be descended from my SLAUGHTER lineage that we believe to be from John SLAUGHTER, immigrant to Jamestowne, VA, in the early 1600's. This SLAUGHTER line married into LIGHTFOOT and my SLAUGHTER line married into HATTEN that descends from LOTT - JOYNER - HARRIS from 1600's Isle of Wight Co., VA that married into the LIGHTFOOT line that is believed to connect to the same LIGHTFOOT lineage from (Reverend) Richard LIGHTFOOT and wife, Jane JONES, from late 1500's Stoke Breurne, Northamptonshire, England. My particular LIGHTFOOT search is for more information on my maternal 4th great grandmother, Martha Jane Dorsey? LIGHTFOOT, born: abt. 1763 in VA?/Antigua?, said to be daughter of Philip LIGHTFOOT and, perhaps, a mother named Susannah ?, as there is a Margaret Susannah LIGHTFOOT, born: abt. 1765 in Antigua, most likely, who is a daughter of the Philip LIGHTFOOT who spent the years of approximately 1763-1773 in Antigua as did his relative, Henry Benskin LIGHTFOOT, during a different timeframe, and this Philip LIGHTFOOT is believed to be descended from Royal Navy sea (Captain) John (2) LIGHTFOOT, brother of Virginia militia (Colonel) Philip LIGHTFOOT, (who married Alice CORBIN, daughter of Alice ELTONHEAD and Henry CORBIN,) and Philip and John were immigrants in abt. 1670 from England to Virginia, and (Captain) John (2) LIGHTFOOT died later in Suriname in the West Indies/Caribbean. They were the sons of John (1) LIGHTFOOT, Esq., barrister of Oxford Univ. and Gray's Inn College of Law. And Alice ELTONHEAD and Henry CORBIN were also the parents of Gawin CORBIN who married Jane LANE, sister of Mary LANE, (mentioned more below,) daughters of Mary ? and (Captain) John LANE, (is he related to immigrant, Thomas LANE?) And trying to find out if/how this LANE family connects to the Ann JOYNER who was the sister of Bridgeman JOYNER, Sr., (children of Thomas JOYNER and wife: either Elizabeth ROBINS or Sarah EDWARDS???) Bridgeman JOYNER, Sr. married a woman named Ann HARRIS, (daughter of Ann MARTIN and Thomas (2) HARRIS, son of Alice WEST and Thomas (1) HARRIS, descended from (Sir) William HARRIS.) My LOTT line descends from this JOYNER - HARRIS lineage. After the death of (Colonel) John CATLETT was killed in 1670 defending the port at Port Royal and in 1672 CATLETT's widow, Mrs. Elizabeth UNDERWOOD TAYLOR? SLAUGHTER CATLETT married as her 4th husband, (Reverend) Amory BUTLER. (Source is 'ADVENTURES of PURSE & PERSON, (1956),' by JESTER, page 302. (Colonel) John CATLETT and his land grant partner, John ROUSEY/ROUZEE/ROWZIE, had land grants in Rappahannock Co., VA, where my ancestors, John JENNINGS, immigrant, and John PAYNE, immigrant, and shipowner/shipbuilders, also had land. >From (Colonel) John CATLETT's 1st marriage to ? LUCAS, who died before John immigrated, had sons Nicholas CATLETT, born: 1644 in England, (who married Susannah MERIWETHER, daughter of David MERIWETHER, son of Nicholas MERIWETHER, (is this I or II?) and son, Thomas CATLETT. (The MERIWETHER lineage appears to enter into my lines of descent later on with the marriage of my PAYNE - JENNINGS ancestor named PARKER who married into the COLLINS? - ELLZEY that married into COPELAND - TUCKER - LEWIS - HOWELL lineage that appears to be descended from two sons of Elizabeth WARNER, (daughter of Mildred READE and Augustine WARNER, II,) and John "Councillor" LEWIS,) who were (Colonel) Charles Lilburne "Of the Byrd" LEWIS, Sr. and his wife, Mary HOWELL, daughter of Mary LANE, (daughter of Mary ? and (Captain) John LANE, (is he related to Thomas LANE connected with these families mentioned on this page?,) and Mrs. Mary LANE HOWELL's 2nd husband was Henry FIELDING and their daughter, Frances FIELDING, married a 3rd son of Elizabeth WARNER and John "Councillor" LEWIS,) and the 2nd son of Elizabeth WARNER and John "Councillor" LEWIS that I believe that I descend from through Howell LEWIS, born: bet. 1782-1788 in Granville Co., North Carolina, was the son named (Colonel) Robert "Of Belvoir" LEWIS who married Jane MERIWETHER, (daughter of Elizabeth CRAWFORD and Nicholas MERIWETHER, II.) And back to the other 2 known children, in addition to Elizabeth and Sarah, of (Colonel) John CATLETT and 2nd wife, as her 3rd husband, Mrs. Elizabeth UNDERWOOD TAYLOR SLAUGHTER CATLETT (later BUTLER,) were: John CATLETT who married wife # 1: ? SMITH, daughter of (Major) John SMITH, and then married wife # 2: Elizabeth GAINES. And the other son of (Colonel) John CATLETT and Mrs. Elizabeth UNDERWOOD TAYLOR SLAUGHTER CATLETT (later BUTLER) was William CATLETT who married Elizabeth THOMPSON who had a brother, William THOMPSON and they are somehow related to or connected to Robert PAYNE and wife, Catherine ?, is she a PAYNE or a CATLETT or a THOMPSON, very confused here, and being in Rappahannock Co., VA I would imagine that they are related to John PAYNE, immigrant, born: 1615 in Yorkshire, VA that I descend from. I don't know for sure but I believe that there may be a connection with the name of SALLIS and the middle name of my paternal 5th great grandfather: Edward Salley JENNINGS, Sr., born: 1720 Richmond Co., Virginia, whom is believed to have married a woman named Sarah MOORE/MORE, (but still looking for any information on her family.) They were in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War and then their family was in Christian County later Caldwell County, Kentucky. Edward Salley JENNINGS' grandmother was Amy DONIPHAN who was the sister of Alexander DONIPHAN, Jr. who married Mrs. Sarah SALLIS. It could be possible that the family name of SALLIS before their being in England originated from France and possibly had the pronunciation of SAL - LEE and might be akin to the SALLE and SALLEY lines out of France but I really don't know for sure. A pronunciation of SAL-LEE could be responsible for the spelling of SALLEY for the middle name of my 5th great grandfather, Edward Salley JENNINGS, Sr.. He may have been named simply for the family of his great aunt by marriage, Sarah SALLIS, who married Of course, it is possible that he is also, in some way, descended from the SALLIS lineage himself. We are missing a couple of the other immediate maiden names some of his ancestral grandmothers so there may be an additional SALLIS/SALLEY/SALLEE connection not evident yet. My descent is from Alexander DONIPHAN, Jr.'s sister, Amy DONIPHAN, born: abt. 1662 in VA, and her 1st husband, (Captain) John KELLY, (after his death she married Edward RANSDELL,) and I descend from their daughter, Ann KELLY, born: 1696 in VA, died: 1734/35 in Richmond Co., VA, and her husband, William JENNINGS, Jr., born: abt. 1695 in Richmond Co.,VA, died: 1733 in Richmond Co., VA, (son of Mary WILLOUGHBY and husband, William JENNINGS, Sr., born: abt. 1668 in Rappahannock Co., VA, (son of Margaret PAYNE, (daughter of John PAYNE, immigrant, born: abt. 1615 in Yorkshire, England, and wife thought to be Margrett ROBINSON?, daughter of early 1600's Tidewater area, VA immigrant, Richard ROBINSON,) and 1st husband, John JENNINGS, Sr., immigrant, that I believe was born: 20 May 1644 in St. Martin's Parish, Birmingham, England. (Mrs. Margaret PAYNE JENNINGS later married 2nd husband, Christopher EDRINGTON, Sr..) My Edward Salley JENNINGS at the age of 15 years old was orphaned after the death of his mother and father both in 1733 and 1734/35 in Richmond Co., VA at which time guardianship was given over to his uncle, Augustine JENNINGS, born: abt. 1708 in Richmond Co., VA, whose wife was Hannah WILLIAMS whose will was witnessed by Alexander Doniphan KELLY, brother of Ann KELLY, daughter of Amy DONIPHAN. And Alexander Doniphan KELLY became the guardian for Edward Salley JENNINGS's sister, Martha JENNINGS, and Alexander and Ann KELLY's brother, Matthew KELLY became the guardian for William JENNINGS, III and John JENNINGS, additional brothers of Calathan, Martha and Edward Salley JENNINGS. Calathan JENNINGS' guardian was also the aforementioned Augustine JENNINGS. The aforementioned (Captain) John KELLY, born: abt. 1660 in ??, who married Amy DONIPHAN, was the son of Penelope ? and Matthew KELLY, born: abt. 1640 in ?? Perhaps his mother was Penelope SALLIS or SALLEE/SALLEY? This is, of course, just speculation on my part at this time. And the aforementioned Mary WILLOUGHBY, born: abt. 1670 in ?, who married William JENNINGS, Sr., has no information at this time that I know of regarding the names of her parents but it is thought most likely that she is descended from Ambrose WILLOUGHBY. Perhaps there may be a connection with the SALLIS family there for her mother or other ancestor or SALLEE/SALLEY. Of course, again, this is strictly speculationg for Mary WILLOUGHBY at this time. In addition, I think it is quite possible that Mary WILLOUGHBY's lineage may connect with Augustine WARNER, I and Margaret TOWNELEY but that is also just speculation based on the information that she had a son who was named Augustine JENNINGS and, so far, there is no other source for the name of Augustine. Most of my families arrived in the early to mid 1600's and mostly were from Wales and England and most named their sons with family surnames and some of the daughters as well. There are so many variables with the possible connections that I want to mention a few more things regarding the JENNINGS' family mentioned above: Ann KELLY, born: abt. 1696 in VA, died: 1734/34 in Richmond Co., VA, md: William JENNINGS, Jr. child: Edward Salley JENNINGS, born: 1720 in Richmond Co., VA, md: Sarah MOORE/MORE, (we think) .....Richmond Co., VA > SC during Rev.
