I was just going through the list that was sent of the Jennings marriages. I think I can clear up 3 of them a little. The marriage of Jim (G) Cruddock would have been a Craddock. There were several marriages between the Jennings and Craddocks. The marriage of Elijah C. would have been to Mary Jewell, and the next one for Elijah H. was to Priscilla Hackworth. I have researched these all for years trying to find the parents of Elijah H. and have utterly hit a brick wall. I know this family is all connected, but can't find exactly how on some of them. Elijah C. solemnized one of the marriages of Elijah H. I would have to check which one. I have copies of their marriage bonds. Deloris
Hello List. This is Linda Jackson in Tullahoma, TN. In 1998 Judy Henley and I published a family collection of over 5500 papers that were in a little cupboard called a safe. Most of the bundles of papers appeared to be intact from the time that they were bundled and placed in the safe. the first Jennings Records included in the Collection were from Robert Cross Jennnings b. 1789 and were his dealings in Wilson County Tennessee.deeds ect. These papers will be of some interest to Jennings relatives in the Wilson county clans. These records are from 1812 to the late 1830's. Robert was the son of William Jenning b. 1763 in Va..and Elisabeth ? Cross Jennings) Robert moved to Bedford County with his wife Chaney Word ( b. 1789 about 1838 where he continued to keep his records to his death in 1875 and pass them to his son Samuel Thomas Jennings ( b. 1841) who married Lou Vicie Phillips. Some records for Edmond W. Jennings, b. 1818 to Robert Cross' Jennings first wife Mary Word, were also included, and some of Emmet Cross Jennings ( b. 1841), son of Robert Cross Jennings and third wife, Mariah Wheeler. Lou Vicie Phillips ( b. 1845) was the daughter of Garrett Phillips( b.1815) , who was a sherriff of Bedford County in the Civil War. Civil records of Garrett including court dockets and many cases, were in the cupboard. This means there are many records of Bedford County doings involving many citizens. Garrett Phillips' wife was Charlotte White ( b. 1816) who was the daughter of Joshua White. Originally the cupboard also contained papers of Joshua White( b.1785). Copies of his letters are in the book. Also in the cupboard, and maybe in some ways the most wonderful, were the papers of Matthew Phillips (b. 1770 in Surry County NC), one of the pioneer citizens of Bedford County. He was a justice of the peace, and had bundles of his cases, and records of citizens that came to his cotton gin hundred's listed), and that he sold liquor to from his LEGAL STILL! Also there are records of the El Bethel Baptist Church of Christ starting in the mid-1820's and then later on when it became El Bethel Baptist to the Early 1900's...bits and pieces as my ancestors were often serving in the church and conference keeping some records...both Jennings and Phillips. Samuel Thomas Jennings ( b. 1841 d.1907) added his own papers, store accounts, letters, tax records ect records to those of Robert Jennings, Joshua White, Matthew and Garrett Phillips. From there the papers were passed to his son, Robert Harrison ( RH) Jennings b. 1872- 1937 He was the last contributor to the safe. They were carefully transcribed for genealogical information with all letters and deeds being fully transcribed. There is a 29 page first name index was prepared by Judy Phillips. The book was finally printed in 1998. The papers were broad in scope and included so many Bedford county citizens from the early days of the county. Bedford County Tennessee has had 3 court house burnings so the records tend to be sketchy. The book is in the Bedford County Library but filed under the family section ( either Jennings or Phillips) so that I dont think most people find it to see if their ancestors are in it. The papers were organized into 501 files ( some were too big but that is hindsight!). They were prepared and then microfilmed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. The microfilm can be viewed at the Tennessee State Library . It is on 3 reels. Mf. 1571. I think they can be purchased but the TSLA has had a copy of the book and is in the process of purchasing a second book so that they can then loan one out on Interlibrary loan, or I think the book then can be used to reference the film. There will be some lapse time while they hardbind it, ect. IT is in about 16 other libraries. I can post this to the list if someone wants that information. I really just wanted to let you know it will soon be available for InterLibrary loan! I have an email in to the cataloger to see how long it will take before it is ready to be loaned out. thanks, Linda Jackson (I only have 5 left to sell afterwhich I can reprint if there is a call for it.)
