    2. Connie It is no problem and you didn't take up my "valuable" time (gee, wish my kids knew that term"). I am just working on the Jennings website today. We are ALL concerned with this issue I hope. My son called last night to say to open no attachments from him as there is one going through his office at work, but "it is harmless mom". Turns out I didn't receive any message from him, BUT the one he thought was going out was the one that I sent out the email about this morning ... AND INDEED VERY HARMFUL. 3. Thank you for responding, Debbie. Although I know that attachments are not allowed on our lists I am glad for your comprehensive explanation of how this so-called posting from the list made its way to me. I'm sorry to have taken up your valuable time to deal with this, but having just had a hard drive crash (not virus related) I am more sensitive to these issues. Thanks again! 1. Re: [JENNINGS] John Wesley Jennings and Virus Alert
    2. Connie and everyone else I want to let everyone know that: These attachments that you are receiving ARE NOT COMING THROUGH/VIA the mailing lists. What is happening and I will take Connie's case for an example: (congrats for resisting the temptation to open it!) Connie at some time in the past has made a posting to the Jennings Mailing list regarding John Wesley Jennings and that was her subject line that she used. When this message appeared on the list, the subject line looked like this: Re: [JENNINGS] John Wesley Jennings Now, ANYONE on the list that either opened or read her posting has it in their system. They may also have replied to her at one time or another. Therefore her email is also in their system or perhaps their address book. Some systems are set to save any address that a person replies to. NOW-- When that person (whoever it is) gets a virus in their system, then it picks up EVERYTHING in their system/address book and sends out an email using that subject line. So therefore the subject line appears to be coming from the list and it isn't. As I posted the other day, NO LEGITIMATE ATTACHMENT WILL EVER, EVER COME IN WITH A SUBJECT LINE THAT HAS THE LIST NAME ON IT. If you receive a posting with the name of the list on it and it has an attachment, IT IS A BOGUS POSTING!! IT IS A BOGUS POSTING!! You can delete these without reading and not be concerned that you will miss data. I cannot stress this strongly enough-- Until this current virus flare up is past DON'T OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS FROM ANYONE!! Unless someone lets you know ahead of time in a separate email of what they are sending and how many. If there is a variation of what they said, then DON'T OPEN IT. Don't worry about missing a piece of data... Is that one piece of data worth YOUR ENTIRE SYSTEM?? Remember, in being on a mailing list, you are also risking everyone else's system also. 3. I just received a message via the Jennings list from Phil and Jean Parks that has an attachment. Norton says the attachment is infected and have notified them so I thought I would pass this along to those who may not have virus protection. I am related to a John Wesley Jennings but for obvious reasons will not open the attachment. Connie

    2. I AM SENDING OUT THIS MESSAGE FROM THE MacAfee VIRUS WEBSITE. PLEASE, TAKE THIS WARNING SERIOUSLY. I am sending you this warning message regarding this 2nd NEW VIRUS to protect your system. This one comes from the MacAfee Virus Website... McAfee.com has seen an OUTBREAK of computers infected with W32/Goner@MM, also known as Pentagone, Goner or Gone. This is a NEW, HIGH RISK virus that spreads via Microsoft Outlook email and ICQ instant messaging programs. This mass-mailing worm will arrive from someone you know with the following email message: Subject: Hi Body: How are you ? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you I am in a harry, I promise you will love it! Attachment: GONE.SCR Goner has a DESTRUCTIVE PAYLOAD. When the attachment is opened, it will look for a variety of anti-virus, firewall and other security programs and attempt to delete them, along with ALL FILES in the same directory. This worm will also place a trojan, REMOTE32.INI, on the system, which contains instructions to attempt Denial-of-Service attacks on other IRC users. 2. Listmembers: I will be working on the Jennings Place website tonight and tomorrow, so if anyone has anything to contribute please do so. I am still transferring items from the MyFamily.com site. PLEASE, PLEASE remember these few things when sending me items. 1. Given the rash of attachments/viruses going around, BEFORE sending me an attachment, send me a separate email detailing what and how many you are sending. 2. When sending photos please give me as complete of information as you can. Most importantly names, dates, locations. I will be taking info for any of the categories on the website. If anyone feels that there is another area needing covered that there isn't a section for, then please let me know. 1. [JENNINGS] Please Read from List Admin
    2. Dear Listmembers: Seems as if of late I am the only one contributing to the list, but in light of recent developments that is understandable. However, one item needs to be addressed. It covers a view different areas. I AM NOT BEING HARSH WITH THIS, IT IS STANDARD MAILING LIST PROCEDURE FOR ALL LISTS. UNSUBSCRIBING--in order to unsubscribe from a mailing list, please send an email to: whatever your list name-L-request@rootsweb.com Place only the word unsubscribe in the body of the post. I am available to assist you IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH IT. Otherwise it is an automated system. At the present time I am completely deluged with just removing persons who are infected with the current virus. CHANGE OF ADDRESS-- Unless you have unusual problems with this procedure it is also an automated system. Just unsub under your old email and resub under the new one. If for some reason you cannot take the old one off since this works with the address of your email, I will do this, but you can subscribe for the new one yourself. ** If you do need assistance in either of the above areas, I REALLY NEED your old email as well as the new one along with the name of the list. I can't do anything with it otherwise and they will be deleted. AUTOMATIC REROUTING SYSTEMS-- Please don't set your system to mail this info to your mailing lists. 1. They don't tell anyone the NEW address only that the mail is being re routed to a new one. 2. They don't give a clue as to the list name you are even on. MAILING YOUR SUB OR UNSUB REQUESTS TO ME OR THE LIST-- These will be deleted. The process for subbing or unsubbing is VERY EASY AND SIMPLE. THESE DIRECTIONS ABOVE DON'T APPLY TO THOSE BEING REMOVED AND REPLACED DUE TO THE VIRUS. I AM DOING THOSE MYSELF. 3. Hi, Debbie, thanks for your work. Unfortunately, on Outlook Express, I can't delete an email without clicking on it (I'm not talking about the attachment, just the standard email line). I have a Badtrans sitting there on my page, and my anti-virus program stops it, but I can't get rid of it. Any ideas? Regards, lorraine

    3. First, my apologies for posting this directly to the list, with it not being of the nature of this list, but I felt it might be useful for anyone using Outlook Express. Lorraine and anyone else interested. There is indeed a way, in Outlook Express, to avoid actually opening the message when you click on it and therefore gives you a chance to delete it without getting zapped by a virus. What has to happen is the bottom pane, called the preview pane, which what allows to see what is in a message when you click on it, must be closed so that instead of having an upper and lower pane, you only have one pane which is the list of messages. To close the preview pain, in Outlook Express go up to View and the click on Layout, a window will come up and about at the mid point of this window is a box marked preview pane, which by default is checked. Uncheck that little box and hit Apply and the bottom preview pane window in Outlook Express will disappear. This means that unless you go back in an check the box again, you will have to double click to open any mail you have in your mailbox, but it give you the control to read only what you want to read and delete what you want to delete without any danger. I have had mine setup this way for some months now, ever since another major virus threat came around and this was suggested by Norton for Outlook Express users because some viruses, such as the Badtrans that we are dealing with now, can be unleashed by clicking on it and having it come up in the preview pane. Most people aren't aware of this option and think there is nothing they can do to delete a message without opening it. Granted this isn't a fail safe against getting a virus because I got this Badtrans, but that was from foolishly opening an email, (by double clicking) what I thought was a legitimate reply to an old query and unleashing the virus onto my system. This was on one of the first days of this latest threat and what is happening now had not yet gotten to the point it is now. My system is clean now, but it an aggravation that I could have spared myself easily had I known what was happening. 2. Lorraine You need to go into your virus scan and adjust the settings for what actions you want it to take when it finds a virus. Also you can with Outlook just highlight the posting and then click on delete and it will go away. I used to have Outlook. 1. [JENNINGS] Jennings (1800's-1900's) IA / MO.
    2. My great-grandfather was DELL JENNINGS b. abt. 1864 near Corning, IA. He moved to Kansas City around the turn of the century. In the 1870 Adams Co. IA Census, there's a DEL NORTE JENNINGS. I believe this is my great-grandfather. On this census, it shows his father is FELIX JENNINGS b.abt.1812 and his mother is JULIA ANN JENNINGS b.abt.1837. He has a bother JOHN WM. H. JENNINGS b. 1858 and a sister NANCY D. JENNINGS b. 1869. It shows his father FELIX works on the railroad and was born in Switzerland. (The 1910 census shows Dell's father was born in Germany.) In the 1880 census, I found a DELNORTON JENNINGS in Worth County, Missouri. The mother JULIA A. JENNINGS is listed as head of household. Delnorton, Nancy and a 10 year old son named CHARLES JENNINGS were listed as the children. The father FELIX and son JOHN WM. H. JENNINGS were not living in this house but I found them still in CORNING, IA in the 1880 Census. While doing a family search on the FHS website, I found a FELIX JENNINGS married to JULIA ANN MATTHEWS on July 7, 1857 in Van Buren, IA. It shows JULIA ANN was born in Van Buren, IA and her son JOHN WH. JENNINGS was b. in Wapello, IA. JULIA's parents are listed as WILLIAM MATHEWS b. 1796 England, died 1863 in St. Louis. It looks like William had married 4 times but according to marriage dates, JULIA's mother would have been ELENOR HOLMES. Since there were only 2 Jennings families living in Corning, Ia.in 1880, I would think this Del Norton must be my great-grandfather Dell. I would just like more proof. Dell married Susie Webb around 1885. They lived in Kansas City. They had several children. My grandfather SAM JENNINGS was born June 2, 1900. His sister IDA was born 1904. A sister JULIA JENNINGS b. abt. 1893 married BERT CARPENTER and they moved to California. There were other sons, George, Bill, and Charles Joe and John. There was at least one child who lived in the St. Joe, Missouri area. I believe his name was JOE JENNINGS. I think JOHN JENNINGS lived in Kansas City. There may have been twins in the family also. My aunt also told me of daughters named Shirley and a half sister named Mrytle. I believe Myrtle married name was Huffman. If anyone has any infomation on this family, I would love to have it. 1. [JENNINGS] For Your Information
    2. Listmembers: As all of you know in recent days we have had a deluge of attachments, viruses, etc hit. Since my last letter of warning I have had many letters of appreciation and some with persons calling me a dictator or a Nazi. This doesn't bother me as one might think as the ends justify the means, (I am trying to protect all of our computers). Even though I did post the message of warning I am still seeing persons getting the virus and I am still unsubscribing them until their systems are cleared up. This is for everyone's protection. Since the way the viruses work they get into someone's address book and send these postings, you might receive them from a close contact or a casual contact as some persons save every address they deal with. They also gain entry into the memory systems and therefore use subject lines familiar with any posts or replies you have made. That is as simple as I can make it. Many of the persons are totally unaware of what is going on until I contact them that it is happening..so don't be mad at those people. I wanted to take a moment to try to help some of you avoid possibly getting a virus. As many of you may or may not know, I have several mailing lists. All of my lists are set to carry the list name in the subject line and this will always be contained in brackets, such as [Kentuckiana-L] (followed by the subject line). Since the viruses are not being carried through the Rootsweb mailing lists, but are only being made to look that way since they are duplicating the subject lines and this would include the list name and therefore look like an authentic list posting... if you receive any postings with a list name in the subject line and it has an attachment--DELETE IT WITHOUT OPENING THE POST. If as you look at your list of mail and see (what appears to be list postings) and there is an attachment there, just hit the delete button. Don't even consider opening it, REGARDLESS OF THE SUBJECT LINE OR POSSIBLE CONTENT. Follow this procedure also for any emails containing the words (not a subscriber) that have an attachment. These are from persons who have been unsubbed from the list. Some of these are activating without opening the attachments although they aren't suppose to do that. I am more interested in what they ARE DOING to your system then whether they are functioning as they are suppose to. You will not receive a message post from one of my lists without the list name in the brackets so use this as a form of detection. NO LEGITIMATE POST WILL COME THROUGH THE LIST WITH AN ATTACHMENT. I will make a listing of the lists I administer within this post so make a note of them. I will use *** next to the list name to denote if any attachment/virus activity has hit that list so far. Some have had no instances and others are just out of control. I am not trying to dictate what you do, only to protect you and others from infections. I am trying to give you all a way of seeing which posts are potential for danger without opening them and doing this with a certainty that you are not missing any vital data you might need. My lists: APGAR *** BINGHAM BOTT *** BUSHEY GOSS INOWEN **** JENNINGS *** KENTUCKIANA*** KNOLL RATZ RICKARD *** SCHUYLER *** SECREST *** SUMMER*** TONER VTFRANKL *** WARFORD Please be very careful in opening your mail. This should have no effect on you posting to the lists...it is more a matter of what you OPEN. As all of you are researching and perhaps working with someone right now on a lineage, let those persons know to notify you ahead of time in a SEPARATE email in this manner: " I am sending you an attachment for the John Smith Family". Have them be specific as to what and how many and to send the attachment soon after notifying you so that you are expecting THAT one in particular. If there is any variation in what they are telling you they will send and what you recieve don't open it and question them about it. Many persons will have no knowledge unless they are told. If you do get unsubscribed from one of my lists you will need to follow this procedure to get resubbed: Contact me personally and let me know your system has been cleaned. I will need to resub you manually as your name will be on a list to prevent automatic resubbing. Please let me know the list name also. No apology is needed as nobody in their right mind would deliberately get and pass on these viruses...I know it is just something that is happening.
