Listmembers: Now that the holiday season is over with, and I trust that everyone had a good one-- let's get back to researching with some good postings to the list. Remember, "we" are the "enquiring minds" that want to know. Lets run a roll call from today January 18, 2002 until next Wednesday January 23, 2002. When making your postings, let them do the most work for you as possible by including the following information: 1.Name of the ancestor you are searching 2.What you are searching for (parents, dob, whatever you are needing ) 3.As many dates and places as possible for identification purposes 4.Any migrations that you are aware of or any children 5.Make separate postings for separate family lines 6.PLEASE DO NOT SEND THESE POSTINGS TO ME (this means don't hit the reply button to this message, make certain to address to the list). 7.Use this format for your subject line: Ancestors Name/Dates/Place OR Info Needed/Ancestors Name/Dates/Place DON'T PLACE "ROLL CALL" or "LIST ACTIVITY" in your subject line, many of those get deleted UNREAD. Answer as many postings as you have information for. ****Finally**** Some persons may have gotten computers for Christmas and are new to the internet or the mailing lists. Please be considerate of these persons as some are making first time postings. FOR THE NEW PEOPLE-- A "roll call" is simply a way of stating "hey, lets get some postings on our list" or "put your queries out there". Good Luck to Everyone Wishing you ancestral searching success, Debbie Jennings Please check websites below: Sweet Owen County IN http://www.angelfire.com/in4/sweetowen/ Franklin CountyVermont Genweb Franklincounty VT Kentuckiana Home http://www.angelfire.com/ky3/kentuckianahome/ Bingham Pages http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/binghampages/ Goss Family http://www.angelfire.com/nc3/gossfamily/ Schuyler Lines http://www.angelfire.com/nj4/schuylerlines/ Lancaster County VA Genweb http://www.rootsweb.com/~valancas/ Jennings Place http://www.angelfire.com/va3/jenningsplace/

Judy, Found your post re. James Jennings interesting. You may well find yourself deluged with messages from other Jennings researchers looking for info about their James J. Facts about my James Jennings: 1) Parents: Augustine and Rachel Jennings (purchased 100 acres, 1777, Orange Co. VA, from Uriel and Rachel Mallory. 2) b. 1780, Culpeper, VA 3) Siblings names: John, William, Richard Waugh, Polly 4) m. 1809, Ann Bradley Montague, of Cartersville, Cumberland Co, VA (dau. of Mickelborough and Saraiah (Moore) Montague 5) Mercantile business, practiced medicine, land investor 6) Purchased 2400 acres in MO in 1829. Moved family to MO in 1839. Seven children: James (said to have been child of 1st marriage to Ann (unknown). Robert M., William H., Mary Jane, Edward S., Martha Eliza, John C., Ann M. 7) After moving to MO engaged in farming and real estate, wrote letter dated1850 to nephew, William, of Richmond, VA. Con- tent of letter mentioned closing of a mercantile business in VA and also a business interest in Mississippi. Also the death of nephew, James Parks (Jennings?), brother of William (the letter recipient) having moved to St. Louis and then on to New Orleans, suddenly taking ill and dying while in New Orleans. I believe James Parks and William were the sons of James Jennings' brother, John Jennings. James' brother John Jennings m. Fanny Hunt in Culpeper, VA, 1803. 8) James Jennings wife, Rachel (?) died in 1799 in Madison Co, VA Executors: Reuben Willis, Thomas Coleman, John Rouson. Witnesses: Lucy Head, Sally Rowe, Richard Gaines, Margret Allen. 9) Some descendants of Jamestown, VA immigrant, William Farrar (told it is pronounced "Farra") moved to same area in MO (St. Louis) as James Jennings. One or more Jennings descendants married into Farrar family. Family burial plot next to Jennings plot in St. Louis cemetery. 10) Still searching for information about James Jennings' father, Augustus/Augustin/Augustine Jennings and Rachel, his wife. Searching Culpeper, Madison and other counties created from Orange Co, VA, or from which Orange Co, VA may have been derived. Also searching in Carolinas, Kentucky, Missouri and VA for relatives of James Jennings. 11) Bill of sale for slaves caught my attention. The names sound familiar, but will have to double check. Hi Judy, Your post is very interesting. I have a James JENNINGS (1755-1834) that lived in Western KY and was born in Virginia. He was my 5G Grandfather. It doesn't fit exactly as I am not sure he had a son named James and he would have been a bit to old . But, I would love to know the outcome. Oddly, one of our best Jennings researchers is named Jean Williams FARRAR. Good Luckon your quest, Garius Hill Manhattan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Wostal" <jwostal@sat.net> To: <JENNINGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 13, 2002 12:21 PM Subject: [JENNINGS] James Jennings -> Late 1700's to early or mid 1800's -> Ky and possibly VA(?) > I am looking for a James JENNINGS - Late 1700's to early or mid 1800's > in VA and/or KY. > > In the archives at LSU in Baton Rouge is a collection of papers which > belonged to my gggg Grandfather, John CLOSE. > > John CLOSE was a native of Nelson County, KY. I am looking for a James JENNINGS - Late 1700's to early or mid 1800's in VA and/or KY. In the archives at LSU in Baton Rouge is a collection of papers which belonged to my gggg Grandfather, John CLOSE. John CLOSE was a native of Nelson County, KY. In 1804 he was a young man doing business in Louisiana. He was first in New Orleans, and by 1805 he was in St. Landry Parish, LA. John Close married in St. Landry Parish, LA in 1810 to Euphrosine BARRÉ. According to the marriage record of John CLOSE and Euphrosine BARRÉ and the baptism records of their children, John Close was a native of Nelson County, KY and he was the son of Jacob CLOSE of North Carolina and Jeanne/Juanna/Joanna FARRA/FARRAR of Virginia. [The documents were written in French and the script looks like FARRAR and at times, FARRA, however we are not ruling out the possibility the she "might" have been Joanna FARROW]. John CLOSE died in Louisiana in 1865. In the John Close Papers collection in the Archives at LSU in Baton Rouge is a letter dated September 4, 1804 written by Samuel CRAWFORD, Jr. from Breckinridge County, KY to John CLOSE, in New Orleans, LA. The letter from Samuel CRAWFORD, Jr. mentions James JENNINGS: "I had the pleasure of seeing an epistle from your hand to your sister and brother James JENNINGS which gave me great satisfaction to hear of making out well in that country and also to think that you are in the handsome business of making money". and later he adds: "NB I saw your sister a few days since and she and family are all well Mr. JENNINGS and family is well and all your friends severally well" This Samuel CRAWFORD, Jr was the Son of Samuel CRAWFORD and Jennett MEASON/MASON. Among the siblings of Samuel CRAWFORD, Jr. was Eleanor "Ellen" CRAWFORD b. 6 FEB 1777 d. 19 AUG 1817, who married James JENNINGS on 12 SEP 1799 in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY. This James Jennings may have had a father named James Jennings ... so I am not sure if Samuel CRAWFORD was referring to James JENNINGS (the father) or James JENNINGS (the son). I am trying to find the ancestors of John CLOSE and in the process, I am also trying to learn the connection between John CLOSE and this James JENNING. Was Samuel CRAWFORD referring to James JENNINGS as brother of John CLOSE, or was he referring to James JENNINGS as a brother-in-law of John CLOSE? ----------------- A friend went to the Library and looked up James Jennings in Breckinridge County, KY records and wrote: "In Breckinridge records the James Jennings showed up so many times that I didn't even try to write all of them down. He was appointed to appraise, witness, etc. and bought and sold land. Settlements of Accounts of Edmund Jennings, Adm of James Jennings, Dec's 21 Mar 1814. Edmund Jennings moved to Henderson Co., KY 1 Negro, 3 hourses tax 0.24-1/2. Bill of Sale James Jennings 4 negro slaves Winney, Peg, Anna, Let purchased from my father James Jennings, Sr. 17 July 1809. Dec 6 1806 Thomas Kincheloe, high sheriff of Breckinridge County of Adam Bear Writ of firi facias dated March 4 1806 commanding in regarding estate of John Pate, collector of county levy for the year 1804 and Samuel Craswford, Jr. and James Jennings, his secuities, directing the sheriff to collect sum of $275.90 which Martin Wale recovered against them for debt, also $2.50 costs, to sell lots in town of Hardinsburg, lots #28 and 32, in the size of 1/2 acre each sold to Adam Bear, the highest bidder. Saw name as Eleanor Jennigs from 1806 thru May 1811 where it has: John Pate and Jane his wife, James Jennings and Eleanor his wife, George Jackson and Sally his wife (which said Jane, Eleanor and Sally are daughters of Samuel Crawford and Jane his wife), appoints Joseph Allen as their attorney in fact to demand and receive their part of the estate of James Mason dec'd, late of Betetourt Co., Virginia. Wit: John P. Oldham, Richard Stevens, and John Miller. Another one says they apoint Samuel Crawford, Jr. their attorney-in-fact to demand, ask and receive from the estate of James Mason --- - But on 21 Dec 1816 it is shown as Elizabeth Jennings. March 12, 1816 Henry Haynes and Pheba his wife to Elizabeth Jennings, late Elizabeth Duncan, Nancy Duncan, several more Duncan children heirs of Joshua Duncan dec't late of Clark Co., KY............etc You probably already had the info on the marriage of James Jennings & Elenor Crawford Surety John Pate. Samuel Crawford father gave consent. Witness: John Pate, Edward Pate by J. Dodge 9-12-1799 (Nelson Co., KY). Jan 1822 James Jennings is apointed guardian of Jefferson Jennings, James Jennings, Jr. allen Jennings, Samuel C. Jennings, Henry Jennings and Margaret Jennings and with Robert Stephens and James H. L. Moorman his securities entered into bond in the penalty of $1500.00." --------------------------------------- Judy T. Wostal
