    1. [JENNINGS-L] Miscellaneous Henry Jennings Records

    3. Okay everybody. Let's all pool together those miscellaneous Jennings records and put these lines together. My family has put together a bunch of "odd" records and I know that some of you can use them. Please go through your miscellaneous records and post them where everyone can see them. That way we can all share our unplaced Jennings and figure out where they go. Please post where these Jennings belong if you know. Thanks and happy hunting. Henry Jennings ? Nationality: British ? Theatre of Operation: Atlantic ? Active: 1715- 1717 Jennings hunted Spanish and French merchantmen during the War of the Spanish Succession ( 1702- 1713 ). The governor of Havana sent a salvage crew to southeastern Florida to recover the cargo of silver that was carried by a Spanish treasure fleet that perished in a hurricane in July 1715. Jennings together with 3 small ships and about 300 men left Jamaica and fell upon the salvagers. They drove off about 60 soldiers and captured about 350,000 pesos. Returning to Jamaica, the pirates seized a Spanish ship loaded with rich cargo and 60,000 pesos. The governor of Jamaica worried about reprisals from the government warned Jennings about his activities. Jennings left Jamaica and found a new base of operations at New Providence Island in the Bahamas. In 1717, the English government offered a pardon which Jennings accepted, surrendering at Bermuda. Descendants of Henry "Miscellaneous" Jennings Generation No. 1 1. HENRY "MISCELLANEOUS"2 JENNINGS (MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS1) Notes for HENRY "MISCELLANEOUS" JENNINGS: Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 2 Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy: Philadelphia Salem County, New Jersey page 13 When George Fox traveled in 1672 through what is now New Jersey he found a few New England and New York Quakers along the northern coast, at Middletown and Shrewsbury, where a monthly meeting existed before 1670. But West Jersey and Pennsylvania were a red man's wilderness, with only a few Swedes and Dutchmen living along the Delaware. Within a decade, however, the country was opened to settlement by the English, and Quakers established themselves on the river from Salem to Burlington on the Jersey side, and from Chester to the falls in Pennsylvania. The founder of the Salem colony was John Fenwick, Northumberland born, who had served in Cromwell's army before his conversion to Quakerism. With another Quaker, Edward Byllynge, he purchased West Jersey from Lord Berkeley, Fenwick receiving as his share one tenth, the present Salem and Cumberland counties. In 1675 he and a group of settlers sailed for New Jersey in the ship Griffin, and founded their colony on the Assamhocking (now Salem) River. The Record of Births and Deaths of Salem Monthly Meeting, which was established on the last day of fifth month, 1676, indicates that among the Quaker companions of Fenwick on the Griffin were John Smith, his wife Martha and their four children; Isaac Smart; Edward Wade, his wife Prudence, and their servant-men, Nathaniel Champnes, Sr., Nathaniel Champnes, Jr., Joseph Ware, John Burton and Francis Smithey; Samuel Wade and Samuel Nicholson. Other Friends whose names appeared in the minutes during the first years were Richard Guy, Edward Champnes, Robert Wade, Richard Noble, Roger Huckings, George Deacon, John Edridge and Richard Gibbs. These first Quakers were followed by Christopher White, his wife, Esther, and her son, and by Henry Jennings, his wife, Margret, and servant, Martha Beckit, who arrived on the ship Kent in sixth month, 1677; George Deacon, another Friend, came over on the Willing Mind in eleventh month; and in twelfth month the Mary of Dublin brought John and Andrew Thompson from Ireland, each with his wife and children; and Robert Fairbanks, his wife, and daughter, Elizabeth, and son-in-law, Henry Stubbings. John Thompson had a serving man, William Hall. Edward Bradway, who came with his wife and two children on an unnamed ship in seventh month, 1677, had three men servants, William Groome, Francis Burkell and John Alinn. 1. [JENNINGS-L] Ann Jennings m. William Payne 1763
    2. I am a descendant of William Payne m. to Ann Jennings in Fairfax County, VA. I have been told that Wm. Payne married Ann(born 1740) about 1763 had 2 children, John and Millie. I have not been able to find the family of Ann Jennings of Fairfax County. It is likely that she was related to Daniel Jennings m. Elizabeth Owens of the same County. Would anyone have information on the Jennings of Fairfax County, VA. I believe that Daniel Jennings was in Westmoreland County, VA. in 1734>Prince William>Fairfax County, VA., and that he may have died about 1767. I am glad to share information. Thank You, Nancy Norman

    3. Hi Dorothy I found my ancestor, Bartholomew Owen in their records, in the Estates and Wills area. I wanted to order the information they have on him so I went to the screen about ordering. Following is what the screen says: "Out-of-state residents must include a $20.00 NONREFUNDABLE service with each request form. For this fee you will receive one of the following: A) up to 10 photocopees, or B) up to 3 photoprints from microfilm with a citation of the source. If copies of the complete document exceed 10 photocopes or 3 photoprints, a statement for the additional copying costs will be sent before the order is processed. Virginia residents are exempt from the fee but will be charged for copies at a discount. A statement explaining copying charges will be mailed to you before the order is processed." I found the book and page numbers of the 3 documents, but I'm not paying anyone $60 for them, thank you very much. Then I went to Familysearch and find them on microfilm, which as I said, will cost me $3.41 for 3 week's of viewing. Thanks for the URL in the first place, as it enabled me to find the listing of the documents and then I knew where to go in the LDS files to find them. 3. I went in to the URL mentioned for Virginia library and they charge a minimum of $20 for EACH search, none of which is refundable. That's a little steep in my book and I'll try the LDS library first before I use their services. It's only 3.41 and if you don't find anything, you haven't wasted nearly $17. Regards Bonnie in Idaho

    2. Bonnie: I'm confused about the $20 charge for each search in the VA Library. I just now went to the site and viewed Bible Records images that have Jennings in the record. I go to the site, choose Birth, Deaths, Marriages , Wills on First Screen. Brings up second screen where you choose Bible Records. On third screen choose Combination Search. 4th Screen - type in Bible Records in first Word or Phrase box and under Type change Author Keyword to General Keyword by clicking on down arrow...then choose AND..then type in Jennings in second Word or Phrase box and again under Type change Author Keyword to General Keyword - then hit Start. Next screen should have listing of bible records containing Jennings..click on number to the left of one you want to view. The next screen will give you a description of that record -- go to the bottom of that screen and click on the icon for ass. image or other media files. Will get screen showing Bible Record Page 1, Page 2, etc. Click on page you want to view. My computer then gives me this message about viruses, etc and I have to tell it what I want to do so click on Open and Ok. Give it a few seconds and you should have your image. I've never had anything appear about charging for these searches - I am a cheapskate and wouln't pay either! Hope this helps! I am so computer illiterate that I can't imagine I'm doing something others aren't able to do...it's one of those "if I can do it, anyone can do it." things. Good luck..Dorothy

    2. I couldn't believe the messages about not being able to get into this site and thought I surely had told you something wrong. But-I just tried it and got right in. You are right in that there is now a new address (I had mine bookmarked so had not been using image.vtls.com and message says will take you to new site in 10 seconds which it just did for me. Took me longer than that to copy the new http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm! On the first screen that gives you choices, I clicked on Births, Deaths, Marriage and on next screen typed in bible records in first box -chose "and"- typed in jennings in second box and then hit search. I know nothing about computers other than how to turn it on and point my mouse and click! Have no idea if I have something on/in my system that you may not have or for what reason you may be having problems but hope someone solves the problem so all of you can have use of the information found on the site. Strange, the last time I was at our library's gen. attic, I copied out just that address: http://image.vtls.com/ as the description caught my attention, reading "Search VA newspapers, ct. records, state documents on line". The fact that it was the famed U. of VA. archives wasn't mentioned in the book. Now I will hie directly to the site & see whether I can get into some records for the early 1800s. 2. Have not seen any posting on Jennings information available at University of Virginia Library site and I've found it to be very helpful. Found my Jennings line Bible records there which can be viewed. In fact, there are 46 Bible records that have mention of Jennings. You may want to try the site: image.vtls.com (no www or anything-just as I have typed it) It may be a little confusing at first to manipulate the site but think I choose "Combination" and then type Bible Records in first box and Jennings in second. When listing of records appears, click on line referring to viewing of image or think there is an icon at bottom of page you can click for viewing. The VA Colonial Records are also interesting if you have time to read all the 152 references that include Jennings - most of these are for a time period prior to my Jennings arrival in 1754.
