All I know of the Polly, James, and George situation is this: The birthdate for Polly is found in the Bible of John A. Jennings in possession of Mrs. G. H. Hubbard, Hico, Hamilton County, Texas. The marriage to James Porterfield could be a complying error by another researcher after I look back at it>there is no proof and the could be in error. I do know that the following marriage records appear (see below) but I do not know if this is the same Polly. Marriage License and Bonds of Wilson County, Tennessee 1. Polly Jennings, May 14, 1822 & James Porterfield Marriage Bonds and License 2. Polly Jennings, July 22, 1815 to George D. Summers, Wilson County, Tennessee - Sur.: Joel Jennings 3. Polly Jennings, May 14, 1822 & James Porterfield, Lebanon County >...Is April 4, 1805 the birth date of Abner or Chloe? The birth date is for Chloe, see below: Abner Jennings married on October 16, 1828 to Chloe Farris Lester (she was born on April 4, 1805 and was the daughter of Nancy and William Lester (Acklen: page 271)). There children were: William Carroll Jennings, b. July 11, 1829 Mary Ann White Jennings, b. Saturday, February 19, 1831 Jesse Thomas Jennings b. December 10, 1832 Nancy A. Jennings b. July 5, 1834 - d. July 9, 1834 James S. L. Jennings, b. June 16, 1835 (Acklen: Bible Records in possession of Mrs. W. Henderson Barton in Nashville, Tennessee. pp 272-273) For more research on the above family see the Trist Wood Papers on Jennings in the University of North Carolina: Southern Historical Collections. DOCTOR JENNINGS FAMILY HISTORY, Thomas Jennings >From Lillye Younger, The History of Decatur County Past and Present (Southhaven, MS: Carter Printing Company, 1978), pp. 353-354. The first Jennings came to Decatur County in the early 1800s when it was still a portion of Perry County. The name itself is a derivation from the Christian Biblical name John. The Jennings of Decatur County are descendants of Doctor Jennings, youngest son of Robert "Robin" Jennings of Prince Edward County, Virginia. "Doctor" was his first name rather than a professional name. This line of Jennings traces back through the early settlement of the colony of Virginia. where they immigrated from England. Doctor Jennings came to Maury County, Tennessee and then on to West Tennessee and settled near what is now known as Jeanette. He had three sons; Wylie, who moved to Texas, Schayler, who went to Utah and Hiram who remained in Decatur County. Hiram Jennings was married to Eliza Arnold and they had ten children. They were James W. Jennings who married Reena (Sis) Barnett and the second time to Harriet Dodd, Mary H. Jennings, who married Samuel Madison Houston, John Henry Jennings (Federal Army) married Martha Elvira Thomas, Doctor S. Jennings, who died at the age of twelve, Martha A. Jennings who married Harvey M. Jordan, Ezra A. Jennings, died at the age of eighteen, Phebe E. Jennings, married John Howell, Rhoda C. Jennings, married David Burkett, Schuyler Jennings, died at the age of two, William Perry Jennings who married Beckey Quinn. Note: Given names in the Jennings family are the same, in many instances in each generation. John Henry Jennings and Martha Elvira Jennings had nine children as follows: Susan Ida Jennings, married John Bruce and they had six children. Mary Elbert Jennings married Milford Rains the first time and John T. Smith the second time. Eliza Carolyn Jennings married John Franklin Houston, Joseph Hiram Jennings married Allie Clyde Tate and his second marriage was to Stella Rains. They had four children, Ally Jennings whose mother was Allie Clyde Tate and Ruth, Jay and Edward Jennings, whose mother was Stella Rains. Ruth maried HCbart Townsend Sr. Edward married Barbara Peck of Boston, Mass. and Jay is unmaried. Samuel Lycurgus Jennings married Netta Catherine Winston and they were the parents of three children, Ralph Ray, Martha Catherine and Doctor Thomas Jennings. Claudie Elvira Jennings died at the age of six. John Ernest Jennings married Catherine Babely. They had no children. Jesse M. Jennings died at the age of twelve. Several of the descendants of Hiram and Eliza Jennings are still in Decatur County and married to members of other well known families. Still others have gone to farm places in this great land of ours. Through the years they have contributed to the development of our county. There have been farmers, county officials, educators, bankers, merchants and businessmen. Many of the later generation have sought and attained higher education. Three of the descendants are Doctors from Decatur County and hold Ph.D. degrees. Compiled by Doctor Thomas Jennings -----Original Message----- From: B. I have a copy of the Bible Record of the descendants of Lemuel Jennings of Pasquotank County, NC. The first entry: "Leml. Jennings son of Joseph Jenningsand Hannah his wife was born November 22, 1782." Jesse Pugh in "Three Hundred years along the Pasquotank" writes about the role of William Jennings (ca 1635-1694) in the Culpepper Rebellion (1677). I have had no success in trying to link Joseph to this William -- in fact, I have been unable to go farther back than Joseph. I am wondering if Joseph could be descended from another Jennings. With a son born in 1782, I would guess that Joseph was born somewhere around 1760. Does anyone have knowledge of a Joseph who would fit into this puzzle????? Somerville Past and Present. Samuels and Kimball. Boston. 1897. Page 25 "did in the summer of anno 1628, undertake a journey from Salem, and travelled the woods above twelve miles to the westward, and lighted of a place situated and lying on the north side of Charles river, full of Indians called Aberginians," ... "and upon surveying, they found it was a neck of land, generally full of stately timber, as was the main, and the land lying on the east side of the river, called Mystick river." Here on the peninsula they settled and built, and others came soon after. In 1629, "it was jointly agreed and concluded, that this place on the north side of Charles river, by the natives called Mishawum, shall henceforth, from the name of the river, be called Charlestown"; and in this connection it may be of interest to recall that the river was named by Captain John Smith, in 1614, after H. R. H. Charles, Prince of Wales, afterwards Charles I, who, Smith says, "did change the barbarous names of their principall Harbours and habitations, for such English, that posterity may say King Charles was their Godfather." Among the first of the Charlestown settlers to locate on Somerville territory were John Woolrich, Captain(???)Norton, Edward Gibones, Mr. William Jennings and John Wignall; followed a little later by Richard Palsgrave, Edward Jones and others, and by the Governor, John Winthrop, in 1631. My Jennings line was from Pasq./Perq, Cos also Currituck Co in N.C. Gov. William Reed born 1667 married 1 Christain Jennings and 2 Jane Jennings. By Jane he had at least one child. My direct line was from Christain. By Christain ,he had a son William who married Elizabeth Hatch. Upon Williams death, his widow married 2 Mcrora Scarborough, when he died she married Joseph Blount. Gov. William Reed was the son of George Reed and Deliverence ---?--. Thomas Relfe mentions William Reed(who md Elizabeth Hatch) in letters stating that he will leave William land if he remains with his aunt until he becomes of age. This indicates that Thomas's wife (Mary Jennings) was a sister of Christain Jennings. I did the "free" thing yesterday to get to download a certain book, and I haven't received any ads yet. I don't really know, but there's always the delete key. I knew they had this book and I really wanted it on my computer. Was worth it. I don't know if they have any of your stuff. I think you can go in the regular was and do a search for your name and see if there's anything worthwhile. You can start the free week any time up to Dec 24, but once you start it, it's ony 1 week. Hello Hazel, Have you any dates of John and Mary J? such as birth marriage death? I May be able to help, if I can, though they are no relations of mine. My Birmingham ones [maybe!!] were 17thc in Birmingham. I may be able to direct you to the right archives regards Jenny in Gloucestershire,England
I am researching William Jennings who married Elizabeth MacGill. Known children are Charles A., William, Patrick, Nicholas and James. The last name of these boys was changed to MacGill in 1811. Elizabeth MacGill Jennings died in 1809. William Jennings is found living in Baltimore during the 1800 census, but is missing from Maryland by 1810. I love to hear from others who have Maryland Jennings from the same time period.
