    1. Re: [JENNINGS] Jennings from Wilson County, TN
    2. I am looking for a Jesse Jennings born in about 1799 according to the census reports whom I think belongs in this line somewhere. He Married a lady given name Mary per the 1850 Census, Mary was born about 1805. Jesse supposed to have been born in Va and moved to Tenn. thence to Mo. I have names of his children from his probate records and according to birth locations he must have moved to Mo about 1830-1832 as his only son was born in Mo in 1833 The older children show either born in Tenn or Va. depending on what census you look at. He named his only son Doctor Patterson and he named his youngest Daughter Juliet so I think he came from that part of the world but just can't prove it. Let me hear from you and I can supply more info if it will serve any good purpose. Don

    1. Re: [JENNINGS] Jennings in Texas
    2. Steven Cox
    3. Hello, Sandy. I noticed you have the name Gideon Jennings listed. My earliest known ancestor was named John Cox and he married a woman named Ann Brown, probably from Charleston, SC. John Cox died early, around 1787 and his widow married a man named Gideon Jennings, of Orangeburgh, SC. He died around 1815. Their children eventually ended up in Mississippi, where this particular Jennings clan still resides. The son of John Cox/Ann Brown (John Charles Cox, Sr.) and his half-brother, Artemus Jennings (son of Gideon and Ann) were very close and John C. Cox named a son Artemus Jennings Cox. The Jennings name is still found in my family today. So, since I don't think the name Gideon is all that common I'm wondering if you might know of anything about the Gideon Jennings, Ann Brown Cox marriage. We're thinking that any information will come from the Jennings family since no one in my family seems to know anything about John Cox. Thanks! I maintain 17 lists and did this with all of them. I am proud of all of you for the reason that unlike many other lists I am on: I think there was a total of 15 postings among 17 lists, much less then expected. None were argumentative or started a flaming war. I guess this just goes to show the caliber of persons on my collective lists and the good sense and taste that you all have. I was warned not to open them in view of potential flaming, but I had (as it turns out) well placed faith in all of our subscribers to act appropriately and you did. I thank you all deeply. I don't exactly remember where I got this information from but there is a book called "Jennings and Allied Families and there is a lot of information regarding the families. 2. Caren Tidwell
    3. Hello and Hello All to List, I have been tied up with other matters lately but took one quick minute to very quickly scan the Jennings messages. I hope in a couple of months, I can get back into my love, genealogy. As to below, I ran into this same problem with my Jennings in this area. First, I found my Jennings in Ginnings, Gennings, (use variations of the surname - the spelling depended on who was writing the name down and sounding it out). Also, something very interesting that I have found is that the Jennings family had quite a bit of Indian blood and many have a dark complextion. Due to the oppression inflicted on the Indians during this period of time, some Jennings, Jennens, Ginnings, Gennings, etc. claimed to be colored and not Indian. Example: In my line, there are Jennings brother and sisters listed on roles and some of them appear on the colored role and some of them appear on the white role, even though they are full blooded brother and sisters. During my research, I have discovered that some of my Jennings (ended up in Ohatchee, Alabama) did not want to be removed to an Indian reservation so they appeared on the colored roles. This could be your problem. Hope this helps and I hope to be actively involved in genealogy in the near future. Jennings, Sumter, SC Hello list, Here is my response to the roll call. I am looking for information on my husband's g-g-g-g-grandmother, Esther A. JENNINGS. She married Samuel Parker HATFIELD in Sumter County, SC sometime between 1830 and 1836. Their first child, William James HATFIELD was born in April 1836. There are no JENNINGS listed on the 1830 federal census index for Sumter County, but there are several listed on the 1840 index. Any information that would help me find Ester JENNINGS' roots and ethnic background would be helpful. Thank you. Janet M.
