Hate to say it, but given the typical age of folks interested in genealogy I'd say she has passed away if she was inquiring in 1933. While I do not know anything about Grace Erwin Jenkins, I would be interested in communicating with someone in the Erwin Line. Primarily I have researched Jenkins, Holland and Anderson lines. However, we have noticed the strong influence of the Erwin/Irwin/Ervin names. For instance, my GGrandfather was John Ervin Jenkins. Both the Jenkins and the Anderson lines have used this name (some version of it) numerous times. We know of an Ann Erwin who md. a John Anderson (b. 1736) and are not certain if our families have a direct connection. There is a strong possibility that they do have. We do know that the Jenkins, Hollands and Andersons intermarried for several generations, and they migrated from SC with the several other families too - Easley, Lacy, Davis, Barton, Cherry, Darnell, Birdsong, etc. They went to KY, then MO(some), AL, MS, LA and TX. If any of these names rings a bell, please let me know. This is not a typical posting, but does concern genealogy, and just might fit a few people. Jaunice As found in The Librarian's Genealogy Notebook by Dahrl Elizabeth Moore ... Warning -- Genealogy Pox Very Contagious to Adults Symptoms: Continual complaint as to need for names, dates, and places. Patient has blank expression, sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind, except feverishly looking through records at libraries and courthouses. Has compulsion to write letters. Swears at mail carrier when he or she doesn't leave mail. Frequents strange places such as cemeteries, ruins, and remote, desolate country areas. Makes secret night calls. Hides phone bills from spouse. Mumbles to self. Has strange, faraway look in eyes. THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE! Treatment: Medication is useless. Disease is not fatal but gets progressively worse. Patient should attend genealogy workshops, subscribe to genealogical magazines, and be given a quiet corner in the house when he or she can be alone. Remarks: The unusual nature of this disease is that the sicker the patient gets, the more he or she enjoys it. By An Anonymous Author __
Hi, I am researching the descendants of William J. and Elizabeth ? Jenkins. They had 14 children according to the 1900 AL Census. 7 were living and 7 were deceased. One apparently died between census years. The 8 below are the ones I am stuck on, the other 6 will be after the "lost" ones and also additionally information. 1. Malinda (abt 1848, GA; d. unknown), married Alfred Davis, June 30 1874 in Calhoun Co., AL. On the 1880 Cherokee Co., AL census they had one daughter, Tempy, b. abt 1878. They were living at Beat 7. This is the Piedmont area that is on the Calhoun/Cherokee line. I can't find her buried in either county. I can't find a marriage record of the daughter or her buried anywhere. 2. Sarah (b. abt 1850, GA; d. unknown) The last census I find her on is the 1880 Calhoun Co., AL living with her mother. They were at Beat 1, which I believe is Jacksonville, AL. I have no other information on her. No marriage record or death date. 3. George J. (b. abt 1853, GA; d. unknown) The last census I have him is 1870 Calhoun Co., AL in Jacksonville. 4. Hannah E. (b. abt 1859, AL; d. unknown) She married Thomas A. Hill (b. abt 1856) Sept. 6, 1877 in Calhoun Co., AL. The last census I find them on is the 1880 Calhoun Co., AL. They too were living at Beat 1. They had one son, John (b. abt 1879, AL). No more information on them. 5. James J. (b. Nov 11, 1860, AL; d. Feb 23, 1921, AL) married Alice Badgett (b. July 2, 1865, AL; d. Jul 14, 1926) Dec 25, 1887 in Calhoun Co., AL. They both are buried at Walnut Spring Cemetery in Jacksonville, Calhoun Co., AL. I am looking for their daughters: a)Mollie B. (b. Jul 29, 1890, AL; d. Feb 12, 1947, AL) buried at Edgemont Cemetery, Anniston, Calhoun Co., AL) She never married. b)Lizzie (b. Sept 1892) appears on the 1910 census, but not after that. No marriage record or death date found. c)Cora (bApril 1895), same as Lizzie. d)Willie (b Dec 1897) She was living with Mollie in 1920. Can't find a marriage record or death date on Willie. e)Winnie (b. May 1900) Can't find after 1910. No marriage record or death date. 6. Susan (b. abt 1864, AL; d. unknown) The last I know of her is that she is living with Malinda in Cherokee Co., AL in 1880. No more on her. 7. Emma (b. Apr 14, 1864, AL; d. Jul 13, 1920, AL) married William S. Stephens (b. Nov 1870, GA) Mar 15, 1899 in Calhoun Co., AL. The last time I find them are in 1900 in Calhoun Co., Precinct 1, which I think is Jacksonville. Living with them is Linda (b. Nov 1889) She is listed as a daughter, but apparently is not the daughter of William, but no other last name is listed. Emma is buried at Walnut Spring Cemetery in Jacksonville and beside her is a child, William Ed Stephens (b. Feb 4, 1907; d. Oct 21, 1918). I can't find them after 1900. The son would be listed in 1910, but can't find them. 8. Millie (b. Dec 1868, AL; d. unknown) Millie was living with her mother in 1900 in Jacksonville, Calhoun Co., AL. Elizabeth lists a granddaughter, Mary B. (b. Jan 1887, AL) also living with her, which is the daughter of Millie. In 1870 Millie is listed as Millie, in 1880 it is Mattie, and in 1900 it is Mittie. So, I am not sure of her exact name. No more information on either of them. The other siblings are: (Which I have additionally information on) 9. William W. (b. abt 1842, GA; d. May 20, 1862, VA) He died in a hospital of disease during the war. Don't know where he is buried. No more information on him though. 10. Margaret (b. Apr 20, 1945, GA; d. Jul 25, 1917, AL) married White Marable Apr 2, 1865, Calhoun Co., AL. Had 3 children. Married James M. Badgett Jan 14, 1883, Calhoun Co., AL. 11. Levi Walter (b. May 2, 1855, GA; d. Feb 17, 1941, AL) My ggrandfather. 12. Mary Ann C. (b. Jan 4, 1856, AL; d. Mar 1935, AL) married Adolphus Monroe Evans (b. Jan 21, 1836, SC; d. May 9, 1912, AL) Jan 29, 1878, Calhoun Co., AL. Both are buried at Highland Cemetery, Piedmont, Calhoun Co., AL. They had no children. I know he had a 1st wife and they had children, but I don't have the information, but know someone who does because he researches the Evans family. 13. Andrew Jack (b. abt 1857, AL; d. before 1900) married Annie Young. Another cousin is researching him as he is her ggrandfather. 14. Unknown Other facts: Father - William J. (b. Feb 10, 1812, TN; d. Mar 15, 1877, AL) Mother - Elizabeth ? (b. June 1826, GA; d. Aug 6, 1900, AL) Both are buried at Walnut Spring Cemetery, Jacksonville, Calhoun Co., AL. Can anyone add any info to the following: Reverend John W. Jenkins ( Feb. 12, 1849 - Jan. 21, 1916) Reverend John W. Jenkins was born in Madison County, Virginia on Feb. 12,1849 and reared in Page County, Virginia. He never attended any school, in fact, there was no public schools for his group in those days, in that part of the state. In early manhood he felt the urge to preach. At first, with no other text book than the Bible, he began studying at night, after each day of labor was done. In this way, he soon became a recognized student of the Bible and was a champion in discussions of its precious truths. As the years went by, he secured every good book he could secure until he had in his possession such books as was best suited to home study. These did not rest on the shelves unused, for many hours at night was given to the study of them. In this manner of study, he soon found himself well prepared for a religious career as some who had better opportunities. Rev. John W. Jenkins is listed in the Free Baptist Register under the Virginia Free Baptist Association, Winchester Quarterly Meeting. In 1879-80, not yet ordained, he served with Rev. J.W. Myers in Luray, Virginia. He and Rev. Myers served the church in the Winchester Quarterly Meeting, Free Baptist Association. (The Free Baptist Association is known as the Brackett Morrell Association). John W. Jenkins was ordained in 1881. In 1883, Rev. Jenkins was the pastor of the Needmore, Va. He is again listed in 1896, when he served in a place called Body Camp. Rev. J. W. Jenkins , built the first church in Blainesville. The church was first named St. Ann's, later it became Mt. Carmel. Rev. John W. Jenkins baptized 104 colored people in the Hawksbill Creek Creek just above the railroad bridge in Luray, in December weather. Converts were from Blainesville meeting and from similar meetings held at Luray and Berryville. (Courier, January 27, 1949) This item is from a publication called " Strickler's History of Page County." Mt. Carmel Baptist Church had its beginnings in 1897, and was the outgrowth of St. Ann's Non-Denominational Church and St. John's Baptist Church. The present site was presented to Trustees John Redman, Page Redman, George Jeffries and Isaac Berry by the late A. J. Yowell, and registered with the County Clerk on February 16,1897. The original members were the late Rev. John W. Jenkins, Rev. John Redman, Rev. Isaac Berry, Robert and Susie Mallory, Winnie Blair, Hannah Spencer, Aleck Madden, William Lee, Page and Annie Redman, George and Martha Jeffries, George Berry, Henry Marshall, Thomas Sloan, John Spencer, Lincoln Bundy, and others. Rev. John Redman laid the foundation of the church, and continued to labor until the completion of the building. He had accomplished his fondest dream, to build a church. The first Pastor of the church was the late Rev. John W. Jenkins. Rev. John Redman succeeded Rev. John W. Jenkins as Pastor. Deacon Page Redman was church Treasurer until his death. His son Frank Redman filled his father's office and maintained the office until illness forced him to retire. Brother George Berry was Church Clerk, Deacons Thomas Sloan and Henry Spriggs were Class Leaders, Deacon Thomas Lee, Superintendent of the Sunday School. The first choir was organized with Mrs. Virgie Lee, Director and Organist. She was succeeded by Sudie Johnson and Mrs. Lura Redman. These are the children of Thomas and Ruth (Barton) Jenkins: i Benjamin Jenkins m. Hannah ___ ii Chapley (Shapleigh) Jenkins m. Elizabeth Johnson iii Hiram Henson Jenkins m. Polly Ann Willett on 1 Oct 1831 iv Ruth Jenkins m.(1) Zachariah Belcher on 19 Dec 1835 (2) Thomas Sherrod v Parmelia Jenkins m. Thomas Bowden vi Catherine Jenkins m. John T. Mackey vii John Jenkins viii Lemuel Jenkins ix Abner Jenkins m. Martha E. ___ As you can see, I have very few dates. Thomas Jenkins is the son of Ezekiel Jenkins of Fairfax Co., VA ... Ezekiel Jenkins is the son of John Jenkins of Westmoreland Co., VA ... John Jenkins is the son of Nicholas Jenkins. Nicholas Jenkins is the progenitor of our Jenkins family. He came to this Country from Essex Co., England in 1657 indentured to Warham Horsdmanden. I don't have a GEDCOM file on this family. I published a book on same in 1988 called "The Jenkins of Northern Neck and Ole 96" and an update in 1998, however, both are sold out. I'm working on my 3rd. update now. Maybe you can find it in a library. The Family History Libraries of the Mormon Church have it on microfilm. Amy Gilreath
