    1. WILLIAM R. JENKINS submitted by Karen Bush Dye
    2. Joanne Scobee Morgan
    3. These people are not related to me. I know nothing more than I have typed here. This is from a book titled Pioneer Times/July 1966 Vol 10 #3 William R. Jenkins was born ca 1828 in Tennessee. He died around March, 1865. His father's name was William Jenkins (I'll call him Sr., to keep them straight), and he was a farmer. He was born ca. 1801 in Tennessee. Martha and William Jenkins had five children listed on the 1850 Dallas Co., MO. census. They are: William R. Jenkins (born ca 1828 in Tennessee), Joel Jenkins (born ca 1830 in Tennessee), Elizabeth Jenkins (born 15 July 1834, died 3 Sept. 1903, buried in Bradshaw Cemetery. She married Dr. Cole Poynter(1)), Sarah Jenkins (born ca. 1840 in Tennessee), and Wiley (?; born ca 1843 in Tennessee). William Jenkins, Sr.'s father's name was John Jenkins and he was born ca. 1773 in North Carolina. This census record shows another Jenkins directly below, which lists a John Jenkins born ca 1818. He might possibly be the brother of William Jenkins, Sr. This John Jenkins was born in Tennessee.(2). The only other known facts about William R. Jenkins is that on June 24, 1861, he enlisted at Dallas County, MO. in the Osage Regiment of the Hickory Co. Battalion Home Guards under the rank of Private of Company E. He served under Captain Hatfield(3). This unit was organized by authority of Gen. Fremont during June and July 1861. They had duty in Camden, Miller, Hickory, Benton, and Cole counties, and at Jefferson City, until December, 1861. 1st Lieut. of the unit was JOHN DAVIS. 2nd Lieut. was CALAWAY HARRIS. The purpose of the unit was to prevent organization of rebel companies and to capture powder distribution by agents of GOV. C. F. JACKSON. Until about the 15th of August, active service was rendered at Jefferson City and in the field until Dec., 1861. William Jenkins' records show that he was signed out on Dec. 20, 1864,(4). William R. Jenkins was paid $44.07 on August 9, 1864 for serving 4 months and 5 days with the Osage County Regiment under Captain Hatfield (5). On August 25, 1864, William R. Jenkins, at the age of 35, enlisted in the 4th Regiment of the Infantry Volunteers Company C. with the rank of "Mus." under the commandment of CAPTAIN BROWN. He enlisted at Buffalo, Missouri and mustered in on Sept. 6, 1864 in Springfield, MO. He was detailed for Fifer. (6) The 46th Regiment Infantry organized at Springfield, MO. from August to November of 1864 for six months. They were attached to the District of Southwest Missouri, department of Missouri to March of 1865. Then to the 2nd Brigade, 1st sub-district, District of Middle Tennessee, department of the Cumberland, to May of 1865. (7). This regiment had duty at Springfield, MO. and by detachments in Douglas Co., Taney Co., at Stockton, Hartsville, Neosho, Cassville, Newtonia and Buffalo until March 1865 and in District of Middle Tennessee until May of 1865. During service the regiment had 8 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 18 men die by disease (8). William R. Jenkins mustered out on March 6, 1865 at Springfield, MO. (9) Somewhere between Springfield and home, William was ambushed by bushwackers and hung with his discharge papers torn up underneath the tree. His body was found by the buzzards circling the tree. (10) William R. Jenkins' wife's name is unknown at this time. They had one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Jenkins, born 28 jan 1863 in Laclede Co., MO. (11). Apparently, she was named after William's two younger sisters. Sarah's mother died when she was two years old. Her aunt went after her on horseback and rode 45 miles to bring her home. She lived with this aunt until she was eight years old and the aunt died. Then she lived with DR. COLE POYNTER and his wife, ELIZABETH JENKINS POYNTER. (12) Elizabeth was Sarah's father's sister. (13) Dr. Poynter and his family lived in Prosperine, Laclede County, MO (14) He and his family are buried in the Bradshaw Cemetery, west of Dove, Missouri (15). Sarah Jenkins married HENRY FOWLER HOLMAN on 13 Feb. 1879 in Polk Co., MO., when she was 16 years old. Henry was 22 years old. B. F. HAGERMAN was the Justice of the Peace. Joel Jenkins (Sarah's uncle) and William Holman were the two witnesses. (16) Henry and Sarah Holman had nine children: Clarence Everette Holman, born 30 Jan, 1880, Polk Co., MO Mary Ellen Holman born 11 Feb. 1882 Polk Co., MO Floyd Oscar Holman born 21 Nov. 1884 Loyd Austin Holman born 21 Nov. 1884 Virgil Holman born 15 March 1888 Cora Pearl Holman born 13 May 1892 Willie Holman born 1 Feb. 1895 Norma Atlanta Holman born 20 Aug 1897 Verna Holman born 17 Apr 1902 Sarah Jenkins Holman died 29 July 1942 at 12:30 a.m. of Myocarditis due to senility, according to George A. Tallant, M. D. She is buried in Walters, Cotton Co., OK. (17) SOURCES FOR WILLIAM R. JENKINS INFORMATION: 1.
