Dear Cuzzins, You have all been so nice to respond to my query. The general consensus from all of you has been the following: that the marriage license/bond/bann was issued where the bride was living at the time of requesting marriage. Because it would make no sense for a woman who was born in say, VA and moved to Florida, and wanted to get married, to have to come back to VA....to request a marriage license/bond/bann in a state where she was not even residing at the time. OK? So, I agree with you all that it meant that the marriage was issued where the bride lived at the time. In most cases, however, the bride was usually born where she was living, but not always. So, now I have to go back to the drawing board and try to figure out "where" in VA...Nancy Smith Jenkins, and W.H.H. (or as he was known, Harrison) Jenkins/Jinkins were from in VA If anyone can check a FTM cd for all the Harrison Jenkins/Jinkins, Nancy Jenkins that were living in VA "before 1850"...it would help me a lot.....in 1850 Harrison was 29 and Nancy was 22.....I believe Harrison had a brother named James Jenkins, and that Harrison and James Jenkins had a mother named Ann Jenkins....just wish I knew their dad's first name, that would be the one that would reveal the gold mine of info that I need. Can anyone help me configure this, to find out his dad's first name, with FTM cds? Thanks in advance, cuzzin Susan of Tidewater, VA

From: Lex051ee \ America Online: (LEX051EE) Subject: Re: JENKINS (MR. WAYNE HICKS) I don't know if I've addressed properly to get this message to you; however, I read your reply to Karen, regarding her Jenkins/Minnesota. I read that your Jenkins were of African-American descent from Alabama. I would like to know if any of your Jinkins/Jenkins were from Georgia and South Carolina? My great-great grandfather, John Jenkins b. ca. 1836-39 was born in SC, as were his parents (names unknown to date). He lived in Randolph County, Cuthbert, Ga. and m. Millie (?) 1849. Their children: Alfred (1860), John (1862-64); Perry (1865-67) and Josephine (1868). He remarried Mandy(?) 25 years his junior and had Walter, Arthur, Viola, Vanessa and Lucius. The only one from this second group of children I have been able to trace is Viola, who, after her fathers death early 1900s, moved to Phoenix City, Alabama. Would like to hear from you re: your Jenkins line. Alexis ------- FORWARD, End of original message ------- -=[Wayne]=- "We are not interested in the possibilities of defeat."

The obituary of Isaac Washington JENKINS says he was born in McClean County,IL on 18 May 1869. He married [Mary] Alsinde BURK and lived in Selma and Clarksville , IL before moving to Minnesota. Isaac's sister, Nancy Belle JENKINS w/o Andrew M. The obituary of Henry Booten JENKINS [older brother of Nancy Belle and Isaac Washington] says that he had three daughters living in Worthington ,Minnesota in March 1943. They were Esther JENKINS w/o Dayton STAUBUS, Ruth JENKINS w/o Victor VILSTEN [BILSTEN], and Inez JENKINS w/o A.H/ DOEDEN. Henry Booten, Nancy Belle, and Isaac Washington JENKINS had an older brother John W. Dear Cuzzins, Boy, I just read what I had written to the digest on the above. Gosh, I am a dummy. I forgot that not everyone has a complete run down of my genealogy...! I know I made that last message to the list so confusing. And I apologize to the list. Forgive me please. Joseph was my great grand dad....his death cert listed "his" parents by his second wife Nellie, (who was still alive, naturally)...and Nellie put down that my great great grand parents were from VA...and "they" are: Harrison and Nancy Smith Jenkins, and I just found "their" marriage bond in Gates County, NC. Then I read a census book on Gates County, NC, and found Harrison and Nancy Jenkins are from "VA" according to that census book. I hope I have cleared up my confusing previous post. Can someone tell me what the clerk of the court meant when he said that the marriage cert was issued where the bride was "from"...did he mean where the bride was "born"? I would appreciate so much knowing the difference. Thank you all so much, and thank you for being patient with a newbie like me, Susan of Tidewater, VA
Hi cuzzins, I went to the library today, and looked into a book on marriage bonds of Gates County, NC. Copied the page so here it is, more complete than what I was sent from the court house: JENKINS, Exum & Elizabeth ODOM, 29 Sept 1825: Jethro SUMNER. JENKINS, Henry & Prudence HOLLAND, 24 Oct 1826: Willey CROSS JENKINS, Henry J. & Donna M. SEARS, 6 Nov 1858: Adoniram J. COBB. -J- JENKINS, James & Mary EVERITT, 7 May 1853: Bryant SAUNDERS. Married 8 Jan 1855-Wm Henry LEE -U- JENKINS, Wiley W. & Mary RIDDICK, 10 Dec 1821: Kedar PARKER. (Wt: Edwin SUMNER & -D-) JENKINS, William x (of Nansemond Co. VA) & Catherine RAWLS, 28 Feb 1789; William x WILLIAMS. -A- JENKINS, William & Edny HARRELL __ ___ 1845 {LEFT BLANK}: David L. MELTEN. JINKINS, Abraham & Miss Jane HAYS, 28 April 1856: Abraham HOWELL. Married 29 April by J. B. LANGSTUN. -I- JINKINS, Arthur x & {LEFT BLANK}: 28 Feb 1832: Nicholas WADE. -S- JINKINS, Harrison & Nancy SMITH, 1 April 1850; John B. WILKINS. -kk- JINKINS, Reuben x (of Nansemond Co, Va) & Milley RAWLS, 10 Jan 1786; Willoby JENKINS (of Nansemond Co, Va). -4- JINKINS, Winborn & Nancy WALTERS, 13 Feb 1792: William DOUGHTIE. -A- And that is it for the marrige bonds in Gates Co, NC for the JENKINS/JINKINS... these are just the "index"....have to send to the Archives in Raleigh, NC for the actual marriage bond, cost about $8...hope this helps someone else! You have all been so very, very good to me...just hope I can help you all. Thanks again, Susan of Tidewater, VA. (ps, don't know what the letters mean at the end of the listing, where it is -A-, or -kk- or -4-) anyone know?
Hi guys, Now I have another question: The clerk of our courts said the marriage certificate was issued "where the bride was from"...(not the groom)....ok, so does that mean that the bride was born in the place where the marriage certificate was issued....or....was she/ and or her family just "living" in a place for a while and that is why the marriage certificate is issued there? I ask this because I have a problem. (naturally, don't I always! smile!) On Joseph's death certificate, his second wife Nellie wrote that Joseph's parents were from "VA"....then I find the marriage certficate was issued from Gates County, NC... I checked the book on census records of Gates County, NC at the library and found Harrison and Nancy, their ages, the year was 1850....and by their names it says they were from.."VA"...(I love it, now I am back in VA looking for where they are from???) My husband says maybe they were "just born in VA and lived in Gates County, NC and grew up there.....if I can find out the answer to the above question...then I will know if the book has a type-O...and maybe they were from NC instead. See what I mean? So, now I don't know if my great great grand parents were from VA or NC....and checking wills from both states and every county in each state will drive me bananas. If anyone knows the answer to this one please post to the list, I am sure we all need this answer. Thanks again, Susan of Tidewater VA
Thank you guys so much for your response to my question on religion. It turns out that most Jenkins are Baptist! I think Patsy said that they went the way their wife went...mostly. Which is what I think they did too. Two sent me messages that said they were Catholics, then 2 or 3 said Methodist, 1 Presbyterian, but mostly it was Baptist. Thanks cuzzins, you are all so good to me. Maybe I will figure out this orphanage thing yet...huh? As far back as I knew, (just with my dad telling me that his dad was Baptist...that really isn't very far!..is it?) the Jenkins were Baptist. "But", with my granny telling me that the children were put into a "Catholic orphanage, and there was a crusifix on the wall of great grand dad's house when she married grand daddy, that makes me think maybe either great grand dad was "raised " Catholic from the orphanage, or maybe the family was Catholic. Anyway, I need to check the Catholic church for records of great grand dad's birth, cause they keep tons of records, I have heard. Thanks so much guys, Susan of Tidewater, VA

I'm unaware that they had any roots up in Minnesota. Also, to the best of my knowledge the Alabama JENKINS' that I seek are African American which might also make it unlikely we have a connection with the JENKINS that yoou speak of up in Minnesota. Anyhow, I'm going to cc: this response to the JENKINS listserv in case others might have a connection for you based on the information you supplied. Some towns in the 1800's only had 1 church -- the small ones that is. I wonder if they probably attended the church that was there for them at that time and then later as churches become more numerous they began to make some choices. Thanks -- Emma
Dear Fellow rooters: The listed site is a wonderful site to research. I forgrt who sent it through, but a BIG THANK YOU. I found my great-great-great grandmother Mahala Craft listed in a Clay County Kentucky Biography under a Biography of A Crace which is related to my great-great grandparents. I visited the site several times for about three days. I still have other counties I want to research, but The trouble I have now, the last several times I loaded the page I get 97%-99% of the program loaded and then my computer locks up on me. Hello, I am writing a manuscript about the soldiers who served in the 58th Virginia Regiment during the Civil War. So far I have identified over four hundred members of this regiment. These men were all from Bedford and Franklin Counties, Virginia. Most were related to their fellow soldiers. Many were brothers, father and son, cousins, etc. The name of the soldier has been identified as serving in the 58th. I am maintaining a database spread sheet file on all members. I will gladly send you what information I have on this individual if you would like. Also, if you have an ancestor which you believe may have served in the 58th let me know and I will tell you what my data base shows. If you are a descendant of the soldier whose name is listed above, please share with me information such as: family history or other relatives in this unit, a description, if available, of the individual, any of his personal experiences in the War which have either been handled down or of which you have records. Your assistance will enable me to bring these men to life again in my manuscript. Thank you, Luther McLain, Phoenix, AZ, native of Bedford County VA
Hi Susan of Tidewater Virginia & Susan of Colorado, I'm Susan of Oklahoma, my mother was raised in a Catholic orphanage. I think Catholic orphananges have just been more prevalent, in fact I can't recall ever seeing an orphanage sponsored by any other faith. As for my Jenkins I haven't gotten any further back then my great grandfather who was methodist.
Dear Cuzzins, Can all of you help me with a question? I would like to know if Jenkins are mostly Catholic or Baptist or what faith, through out history, and currently? I'm curious because my granny said that my great grand dad was raised in a Catholic orphanage...and I just wonder if the Jenkins might have been Catholic. We have been Baptist for as long as my grand dad went to the Baptist Church....just wondering if some of you can help me. Can you post to the list, what faith your Jenkins are? Thanks, your cuzzin in Tidewater VA, Susan
