I have found that this Jenkins research group is a very helpful and considerate bunch of people and I sure appreciate that so maybe some of you can email me directly with your comments on two questions. 1. Which genealogy software are you using and the pros / cons? 2. Can software genealogy files be used in other programs without reentering all the data again? I want to change from an old DOS to a Windows 95 program. [email protected]

Joni Jackson - What does the "B" stand for in John B. Jenkins name? My g-gf, Russell Renneau Jenkins, wrote to his cousin in Mississippi with the heading, "Dear Cousin J.B.". Do you have a relative in Greenwood, Mississippi named Eleanor Shuler? Eleanor and I think we are related but can't connect with our g-g-gf's. I do not know for sure my gggf's first name, we think it was James. My g-g-gm's name was Martha. We do not know her maden name. We know she was born in S.C. Our first record of Martha is the 1850 census listing Martha, Russell Renneau, and I.B. in the Forsyth County Georgia census. No mention of her husband. I.B. is not listed in the 1860 or 1870 census of Chattooga County, Ga. wher Russell Renneau grew up and married Mary ann Hix in 1870. Let me hear from you. My paternal 3g-grandparents were Richard Jenkins and his wife, Elizabeth. They were born ca1740 in Orange Co., VA in an area which later became Culpeper Co. Their children: Frances Ann m Reuben Cave Lydia m Robert Hisle Mary m Joseph Benjamin Weakley Elizabeth m Richard Jenkins Sarah m William Martin Timothy m1) Elizabeth Smith m2) Nancy Weakley Reuben m Lucy Dodson
Nathan Jenkins m. Elizabeth ? (I think Early because in James Early's will there is an Elizabeth Jenkins listed as a daughter & the time period is about right, no proof, however). Their children: 1) William Jenkins b. 1775; m. Emelia (Milly) Harper on May 31, 1800 in Orange Co. NC. (have the marriage bond for this); there is a land survey for Wm in Christian Co. also dated 1803/4 - I have a copy of this; I also have a copy of Wm's petition for a War of 1812 pension; Wm d. 1881 in Clay, Webster Co., Kentucky. Note, he lived to be 106 yr. of age!! His oldest son, Willis and wife, Elizabeth Parmenter, were early pioneers in Oregon - my line. 2) Delila Jenkins b. ca 1778 in Bertie m. Wm Rhodes on August 22, 1800 in Bertie. 3) Child 4) James Jenkins b. 1782 in Bertie; d. abt 1824 5) Celia Jenkins b. ca 1784 in Bertie m. Reddick Nichols on may 28, 1811 in Caldwell Co., KY 6) Child 7) Frances Jenkins b. Dec. 25, 1788 in Bertie m. Miles Baker ca 1806; Frances d. Feb. 13, 1872 in Lisman, Webster Co., KY (I have photos of their tombstones.) 8) Williford Jenkins b. abt 1790 in Bertie m. Sarah? abt 1827; Williford d. Dec. 1854 9) Samuel Jenkins b. aft 1790 in Bertie m. Peggy Gray on Jan. 19, 1816 in Caldwell Co., KY 10) Nancy Jenkins b. ca 1796 in Bertie Co. m. Moses Stallins on Aug. 6, 1815 in Caldwell Co., KY, Nancy d. Oct. 30, 1856 in Caldwell Co., KY. She was listed as a midwife on death record; she died of gravel; and Sarah Jenkins was listed as her mother (not Elizabeth). 11) W. Wiley Jenkins b. 1796 in Bertie m. Honor Hart on Dec. 21, 1816 in Caldwell Co., KY. (Both were underage - documented); Wiley d. after 1870. Sharon of Wash. State
I am going to list the early families I believe to be the ancestors of my Kentucky and my Oregon line. I can't go back any further than John of Nansemond Co. who proved 10 white rights in Bertie Co. in 1744. However, I believe John of Nansemond was in Bertie Co. purchasing land as early as the 1730s. Land records show this. I don't know if he lived in Nansemond & just bought property in the 1730s, or if he was actually there with his family in the 1730s. If we can get your line back far enough, there may be some connections...that is what I am hoping. The Civil War record for WHH Jenkins could give you some valuable information that would provide the next link back in time. John of Nansemond was m. to Anne? (I tend to think there is a Powell connection here), but have no actual proof. His children are listed as: James b. ca 1726, Elizabeth, Mary, Cassia (Keziah?), John, Anne, Lewis, and Cader. My line comes from the oldest son, James. I have some information on Elizabeth, John, Lewis, & Cader from land records, but it is spotty. I have copies of tax records for 1755-1763 in Bertie which names these men and gives me the approximate date of birth. This is figured by when the men showed up on the tax rolls. You had to be 21 years of age to own property. I keep looking for a way to connect this family back to Nansemond parents. James b. ca 1726 m. Mary? and had these children: 1) Martha (Patsy) Jenkins m. Abner Williford; Patsty d. Sept. 20, 1829 2) Mary Jenkins m. ? Powell (She is listed in land documents as Mary Powell, no husband named 3) Robert Jenkins m. Mary Williford (Mary was also m. to Jesse Boyce, & ? Bazemore) Robert d. Aug. 1791. I have the guardianship records for their children. 4) Isaac Jenkins m. Mary? Isaac d. ca Sept. 1799. His widow, Mary, marries Zadock Mitchell on Dec. 31, 1799. I have sent for the inventory for Isaac's estate. 5) James Jenkins m. Winne Mitchell ca 1770. Winne d. Dec, 27, 1827 6) Nathan Jenkins (my line) was b. ca 1751; m. Elizabeth ? (perhaps Elizabeth Early); left Bertie by 1800 and traveled west to Kentucky. Land survey documented in Christian Co., KY in 1803. Nathan d. ca 1823 in Hopkins Co., KY. 7) Elizabeth Jenkins 8) John Jenkins m. Rachel Dunning; John d, Dec. 13, 1828 in Bertie Co., NC. Hope to hear some connections. Sharon of Wash. State

Nancy died about a year before Pascal was killed during the Civil War, leaving the children orphans. According to military records - Nancy's father, John JENKINS, received Pascal POINDEXTER's belongings from the Army after his death. John JENKINS also filed for (and received) pension in behalf of the orphaned children. I have done very little on this line but would like to pursue it. I have read all the other Roll Call information sent in and I don't see anything that seems to connect to my line. However, my information does not reach back beyond 1850 census. Here's hoping someone will recognize my folks. ClaudineP

Jenkins, Thomas and David (there sure are a lot of these fellows around - Thomas and David (especially David) must be pretty common names in Wales. I am also interested in talking with people who have the name Gomer Jenkins in their line in additon to Thomas and David. Also interested in talking with people who have Jenkins in Ohio.) Thomas Jenkins, born in 1792, lived on 80 acre farm in Cardiganshire County, Llangwyryfon, Wales, in St. Ursula parish. His stone home was called Gilfachgoed, TyNant, "by the stream." It is the oldest home in the parish and the ruins still stand. Thomas married Elizabeth Jones of Llanilar, June 2, 1813 in St. Ursula Church. Married by Rev. Owen Owens, witnessed by Jenkin Jenkins. Children: Ann Jenkins m. Evan Isaac Catherine Jenkins never married David Jenkins b. 7-4-1816 m. Catherine Davies (my great grandparents) and immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1837. He owned a great black "Du" stallion and worked hauling coal. David and Catherine had 6 children. Catherine and 3 of the children died from the Black Plague and David left Pittsburgh with his 3 remaining children (including my grandfather) and came down the Ohio River by flatboat to Gallia County, Ohio. (Note: he met and married Madeline Francis while on the trip but she died before they reached Gallia County.) He bought a farm in Perry Township and married Jane Hughes of Jackson County in 1859. They had 6 children - 2 died at birth. David died 10-26-1900. David was a member of the Welsh Calvanistic church in Wales and joined the M.C. church in the US. He is buried in Nebo Cemetery in Perry Township, Gallia County, Ohio. Children of David and Catherine: Abraham M. (1)Ann Alban, (2) Jane Martin Elizabeth Margaret m. Owen Evans children of David and Jane Hughes: Gomer m. Sarah Ann George Mary Jane m. Andrew Wright Anna m. Charles Carter Esther m. Clarence Baker Additional associated names: Bolles, Bangert, Rodgers, Hardaway, Graves, Hubbard. Abraham Jenkins and Jane Martin were my grandparents.
