Hi all, Found this on the web at the site of the Index of Medal of Honor recipients Civil War JENKINS, THOMAS Rank and organization: Seaman, U.S. Navy. Biography not available. G.O. No.: 17, 10 July 1863. Citation: Served on board the U.S.S. Cincinnati during the attack on the Vicksburg batteries and at the time of her sinking, 27 May 1863. Engaging the enemy in a fierce battle, the Cincinnati, amidst an incessant fire of shot and shell, continued to fire her guns to the last, though so penetrated by shell fire that her fate was sealed. Serving bravely during this action, Jenkins was conspicuously cool under the fire of the enemy, never ceasing to fight until this proud ship went down, "her colors nailed to the mast." Vietnam War JENKINS, DON J. Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company A, 2d Battalion, 39th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division. Place and date: Kien Phong Province, Republic of Vietnam, 6 January 1969. Entered service at: Nashville, Tenn. Born: 18 April 1948, Quality, Ky. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. S/Sgt. Jenkins (then Pfc.), Company A, distinguished himself while serving as a machine gunner on a reconnaissance mission. When his company came under heavy crossfire from an enemy complex, S/Sgt. Jenkins unhesitatingly maneuvered forward to a perilously exposed position and began placing suppressive fire on the enemy. When his own machinegun jammed, he immediately obtained a rifle and continued to fire into the enemy bunkers until his machinegun was made operative by his assistant. He exposed himself to extremely heavy fire when he repeatedly both ran and crawled across open terrain to obtain resupplies of ammunition until he had exhausted all that was available for his machinegun. Displaying tremendous presence of mind, he then armed himself with 2 antitank weapons and, by himself, maneuvered through the hostile fusillade to within 20 meters of an enemy bunker to destroy that position. After moving back to the friendly defensive perimeter long enough to secure yet another weapon, a grenade launcher, S/Sgt. Jenkins moved forward to a position providing no protection and resumed placing accurate fire on the enemy until his ammunition was again exhausted. During this time he was seriously wounded by shrapnel. Undaunted and displaying great courage, he moved forward 100 meters to aid a friendly element that was pinned down only a few meters from the enemy. This he did with complete disregard for his own wound and despite having been advised that several previous rescue attempts had failed at the cost of the life of 1 and the wounding of others. Ignoring the continuing intense fire and his painful wounds, and hindered by darkness, he made 3 trips to the beleaguered unit, each time pulling a wounded comrade back to safety. S/Sgt. Jenkins' extraordinary valor, dedication, and indomitable spirit inspired his fellow soldiers to repulse the determined enemy attack and ultimately to defeat the larger force. S/Sgt. Jenkins risk of his life reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army. *JENKINS, ROBERT H., JR. Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, 3d Marine Division (Rein), FMF. Place and date: Fire Support Base Argonne, Republic of Vietnam, 5 March 1969. Entered service at: Jacksonville, Fla. Born: 1 June 1948, Interlachen, Fla. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a machine gunner with Company C, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, in connection with operations against enemy forces. Early in the morning Pfc. Jenkins' 12-man reconnaissance team was occupying a defensive position at Fire Support Base Argonne south of the Demilitarized Zone. Suddenly, the marines were assaulted by a North Vietnamese Army platoon employing mortars, automatic weapons, and hand grenades. Reacting instantly, Pfc. Jenkins and another marine quickly moved into a 2-man fighting emplacement, and as they boldly delivered accurate machinegun fire against the enemy, a North Vietnamese soldier threw a hand grenade into the friendly emplacement. Fully realizing the inevitable results of his actions, Pfc. Jenkins quickly seized his comrade, and pushing the man to the ground, he leaped on top of the marine to shield him from the explosion. Absorbing the full impact of the detonation, Pfc. Jenkins was seriously injured and subsequently succumbed to his wounds. His courage, inspiring valor and selfless devotion to duty saved a fellow marine from serious injury or possible death and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. K.V. Curry

A while back, I thought that I remembered that someone was looking for information on Gen. Jenkins of the Confederacy. I found this on a hyperlink of Civil War biographies from the Virginia Civil War homepage. It is on the server noted in the heading/body of the text. "THE CIVIL WAR RIVER. February 1st, 1997 THE BUMBLING JENKINS DEAD POLITICIAN OF THE DAY By "Cookie" Reb [email protected] Jenkins, Albert Gallatin (1830 - 1864) Born at Greenbottom Plantation near Huntington, Virginia, now West Virginia. Member of United States House of Representatives, 1858 - 1861. Reorganized Border Rangers, later becoming Co. E, of 8th Virginia Cavalry. As a Captain, he participated in the first skirmish in the Kanawha alley at Scary Creek, July 17, 1861. After managing to control his run away horse, he returned to the battle and called a retreat at Scary as the Federals called a retreat. In January, 1862, he was elected to the rank of Lt. Col. In August of that year, he was appointed as Brig. Gen. in command of the 8th and 14th Virginia Cavalry. In the spring of 1861, he led a raid of horseless cavalrymen from Salem, Virginia, across the mountains over 200 miles to Pt. Pleasant, Virginia. He was detained at Hurricane, Virginia, in a useless 5 hour fire fight with the Federals. On March 30, he raided Pt. Pleasant, which resulted in miserable failure. In June, 1863, he was chosen to lead the Confederate vanguard into the North. One of his notable accomplishments on the way to Gettysburg was at Chambersburg. On June 15, he ordered him men on a midnight charge through the streets. When some of the men's horses ran into a dug out area for street repair, their horses fell and one of the men's pistols discharged. The sound convinced Jenkins that a force of Union soldiers was present. He was about to call a retreat when someone pointed it out to him that it was merely a hole in the paving. Finally making it to Gettysburg on late on July 1st, he discovered that the fighting had finished for the day. On July 2nd, he was ordered to the York Pike to relieve Smith's and Gordon's divisions. Instead, he took his staff to Blotcher's Hill (Now Barlow's Knoll). Apparently, disoriented or lo the fourth or fifth shot from Cemetery Hill, he was wounded by a shell fragment. For some unknown reason, his brigade never reached Smith's and Gordon's divisions, which left them stranded for the better part of the day watching for the enemy and unavailable to Ewell. Jenkin's unusual career came to an end on May 9, 1864, when he was wounded in the arm while attempting to rally his poorly placed troops at the battle of Cloyd's Mountain/Dublin Depot, Virginia. Unable to make it to his retreating troops, he was captured. His arm was amputated by a Union surgeon, but complications set it, and he died May 21. Perhaps he should have remained in politics. Subject: Richie Co WV Jenkins This is my first post on the Jenkins list. My Jenkins' appear in the early 1800's in Richie/Wood Co now WV. John (b:1794) marr Nancy, and had 12 children. What I would really like to know about the Jenkins family is something about John and Nancy Jenkins. A Nancy Jenkins (windowed) married 15 Apr 1855 to William Bravo. This record states she is the daughter daughter of S.P. Jackson and M. Childers. If so, who in the world is this M. Childers? Is it possible these are the parents but that they were not married? Where did the William Bravo come from that we assume married our Nancy, the widow of John. Nancy is listed as Nancy Jenkins living with one of her sons on the 1860 census. This is probably just an oversight, but it could be that it was not our Nancy that married William Bravo. I have almost nothing other than the fact that John is listed as the father on some of the marriage records of his children. Is he from the Monongalia group of Jenkins family where Enoch is a common Jenkins first name? We have some indication that John was born in Harrison County, but the only Jenkins I have found in early Harrison county records is a Joseph Jenkins. Would appreciate anything to help in my research. :-> Danny --- OLXWin 1.00 Genealogists never die, they just lose their census

Hi! I am new to the list and would like to find out if anyone has information concerning Sally Sarah Jenkins who had a daughter Mary Susan Shackleford Jenkins in or around Page Co., VA probably around the mid-1800's. My (sketchy) information has James Shackleford as the father of Mary Susan, but does not indicate whether or not he and Sally Sarah were married, possibly because my information also lists James as Mulattto. If anyone can help with this or maybe is close to slightly different info you might have, please e-mail me privately. Any help appreciated.

I am beginning to suspect that I have maiden vs married names mixed up as I had with my WHEELER and MERRIAM lines. If there is anyone on the list that had any information they are willing to share to help clear up the confusion, it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
