    1. [JEFFRIES] Lands and Lesser Gentry of Eastern Westmoreland County, Virginia 1650-1840s,
    2. Edward White via
    3. SECOND PRINTING. Due to demand, there has been a small, second printing of Lands and Lesser Gentry of Eastern Westmoreland County, Virginia 1650-1840s, a 261,000 word book dealing with 32 primary families, describing them, their era and where they lived within a 37 square mile area. About 46 copies will be available from me. The Jeffries family is one of the ones included in a separate chapter and is mentioned in may other locations in the book. This is a serious work drawn from over 2100 sources, the vast majority of which are primary. The 8 ½ x 11 inch paperback has 284 pages of prose and graphics as well as 47 pages of index and endnotes. There are 28 maps drawn from documents showing, as precisely as possible, the land holdings of the families. While this work goes far beyond genealogy, it contains 46 pages of family trees with primary sources for the information, where available. In some instances the contents vary significantly from common, undocumented internet material. The price is $29.00 plus $4.65 for shipping by media mail or $12.65 by Priority Mail. Virginia residents must add $1.54 in sales tax. For information, and if requested, at no charge, a copy of the Table of Contents, contact me at the address below. Edward J. I will be in Salt Lake City next month for some intensive library work. I will work backward from his inventory in 1843 using the tax rolls. I set up a spreadsheet to add the number of slaves for each year. I will look for a change in that number and hopefully figure out what occurred by comparing the years. The deed books should clarify that; there should be a list of what was sold and/or bought. If I'm lucky there will be an entry in the birth records if a child was born. Of course there is more than 1 Alexander. Makes life interesting. Just hope the trip does not turn into only eliminating possibilities. Author: keithnuttle Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.jeffries/910.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: One of the things you may check is the 1850 and 1860 US census. We are most familiar with the Population Schedule. However there were other schedules, one being the Slave Schedule (Name may not be correct) This was a county by county census of the slaves in the county. It may have useful information for you. The second place you may check is the 1870 census. I was able to partially verify a family legend that after the Civil War my wife's great grandfather's slaves stayed with the family and continued to work on the farm as free men. In the 1870 census there are several adult black people living in the household of her great grandfather. Not proof of the family legend, but supports it. 3. This is for EJ Jr; greetings, cousin. I, too, descend from William Jefferis and his wife Hannah Darlington. But I have this William as William Jefferis, Jr, born 1729, as the son of William Jefferis ( 1697 - 1777 ) and his wife Elizabeth Ring Neild. We both probably should check the Cope books I referred to in an earlier post to resolve the difference in our information. If you would like to pursue this in more detail, contact me at the following; rfolkerth at sbcglobal dot net DICK FOLKERTH Dallas On Saturday, September 27, 2014 4:24 PM, Richard Folkerth via <jeffries@rootsweb.com> wrote: KEITH A suggestion; check the writings of Gilbert Cope.
