The last time I posted this query, I caught a lot of flak about the enumeration as mulatto. I got phone calls, snail mails, and of course e-mails criticizing me. I explained it wasn't my fault. The census takers made those decisions, usually after leaving the house of dark skinned persons. The Melungeons were always described that way and nobody knows who they really were but they were darker skinned. Some people used to think they were of Portugeese descent but I haven't kept up. The census takers would list people as mulatto and ten years later would not. A number of our frontier people took Indian spouses, or significant others, as there was no one else. If the census taker saw a darker skinned person he'd group them all as mulatto. One of the persons below was enumerated as black. Who knows? I would assume people who are very concerned would go the DNA route. I personally don't care what my ancestors were because they were who they were and I am who I am no matter how my wife tries to change me<g>!
