Tyler moved to Uvalde County in 1890 from Taylor, Texas. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- An Account of "Grandpa's" Life contributed by Louis Ray Tyler: My History by Lucius A. Tyler My father was born at Claremont New Hampshire Nov. 28. 1800 and my mother was born in New Jersey in Mt year 1830. I, L.A. Tyler was born in Kane Co. Ills in the year 1854 on July 3rd about 2 2/2 miles from Dundee and the same distans from Elgin between the Fox river and Tyler's creek. My father settled there in the year 183 just after the indians were moved out. He had 400 acres of land that he bought from the Government, and he lived on that place for 30 years, and then sold the place and moved to Dundee Ill. and bought a large brick house, right on the fox river, and lived there until the year 1862. he then sold out and moved to Jones Co. Iowa. and bought a farm of 900 acres right on the Wopsonpinak river, and lived there 4 years and then sold the place in the fall of 1865 and moved to Southern missouri Himy Co. and lived there 6 months and sold the place and moved to Bourbar Co. Kansas and bought a a farm of 300 acres with 40 acres of fine timber on the osage river. just 1 mile from Ft.-Lincoln. He lived there about 4 years and then sold the place and moved to Livingston Co. Mo. 8 miles north of Chilicothe the County Seat, and bought 400 acre farm on the crooked fork of Grand river. The house was on a high hill and all the ballance of the land was in the bottom and nearly every year overflowed from the river and ruined the crops. the water would stay on the land for several weeks. There was fine timber on the place, and a fine apple orchard of 300 trees. That was a good place to hunt--there was lakes along the river and the ducks and geese were very plenty. we used to kill lots of them. I recollect there was a lake just back of our field, and I was near the lake and had just sliped up to the fence, and had shoved my gun through the old rail fence to shoot some ducks in the pond and all at once I heard something flutering up and down came a turkey, between me and the ducks, and I turned the gun on the turkey and killed it. it weight 18 lbs. In the spring of 1872 father sold the place and we started to western Iowa and traveled 2 days north west and camped for the night and that night it snowed about 5 inches and was very cold. and father said he didint like going north, but had rather go to Texas, and he asked us boys if we would rather og on to Iowa or to Texas, and we all said we had rather go to Texas, we was all in favor of going to Texas except mother, and she said if all would rather go to Texas why she would go too. So the next day we started for Texas on april the 19th 1872. and came on through the indian territory, there was no settlement in the territory then. we crossed the Red river on may the 14th 1872 and came on to Dallas. it was but a little town then. And we came on about 10 miles south of Dallas to ten mile creek and camped there for about a month, and then moved south and went into a vacant house and stayed there all summer. then that fall father rented a place on waxahachie creek. 6 miles from Waxahachie and we stayed there and made a crop. and then in the fall started for Lampasas Co. and went about 10 miles north west, but did not like thge country, as the land is all rocky and mountainous. We then started for Williamson Co. and camped on Berrys creek and father rented a place on the San. Gabiril river we made a crop there. and in the fall moved to Bruchy creek in williamson Co. and took up. school lands, 160 acres was all the law would allow to one man to buy at that time. so father and us boys that was old enough took up 160 acres. I was 20 years old at that time and took 160 acres. I lived there 18 years and then sold out and moved to this country Uvalde Co. in the spring of 1992 and have lived here since I am now nearly 74 years old, will be on Feb. 3 next. This 29 day of Jan, 1928 Lucius A. Tyler. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- It seems Grandpa's family were originally Catholics, going back 300 years to England, some of the nuns and some of them perhaps priests or monks. When Grandma and Grandpa got married, Daddy said that Grandma refosed to sign the agreement that she would raise the children as Catholics, but somehow they got married. Later, as Aunt Rowena told me, as the children started coming along (Uncle Charlie, etc.), Grandma would take them to the Baptist church. One Sunday she saw Grandpa tagging along. Later he not only made a profession of faith and got baptized, but became a deacon. Grandpa's becoming a Baptist, as I was told, made him fall into bad relations with some of the Tylers, but later on an aunt of his who had the album (what would a 300-year-old "album" look like?) went up and sent the album to Grandpa. It reportedly had a velvet cover and was in a cedar chest of Aunt Rowena's, and the album was promised to me.
