    1. [JAMES-UK] Richard JAMES (1791 - 1861), Farmer in Somerset and Devon, England
    2. Peter Ferreira
    3. Here is a JAMES and POOLE family group, as best I can figure it out. I trust that this material will be useful to some of you JAMES genealogists. Richard JAMES was born in 1791, baptized 1791, in Dowlish Wake, Somerset. In 1823, in Seavington St. Michael, Richard JAMES, of Kingstone, Somerset, married Anna POOLE. Richard was a yeoman and they farmed in Kingstone, Somerset, till about 1831; in Hawkchurch, Devon, during part of the 1830s; and in Knowle St. Giles, Somerset, where they lived in Knowle House (censuses of 1841, 1851 and 1861); Richard, aged 69, died 1861 (M. I. Knowle St. Giles). By the 1881 census, Annie 77, widow, was living in Crewkerne, Somerset, with her daughter, Annie 46, unmarried. Richard and Anna had issue, including: a. Richard Poole JAMES, born about 1824 in Kingstone, Somerset, and baptized there 1824. Richard 16 was living with his parents in Knowle St. Giles at 1841 census. Richard and his brother Stapleton were next known in Burra district, South Australia. On March 23rd., 1852, in Kooringa Church, South Australia, Richard married Jane NORRELL. Richard was a farmer, hotel licensee, ?mine manager? in Burra district. Richard 56 died in Armagh on March 21st., 1880. Richard and Jane had 12 known children. b. John JAMES, born about 1825 / 26 in Allowenshay, Kingstone, Somerset, and baptized in Kingstone, in 1826. In 1863, in Knowle St. Giles church, John JAMES, bachelor, farmer of Knowle St. Giles, married Harriet PIT(T)MAN, spinster of Kingstone. At the 1871 census, John 44 was a farmer of 160 acres, in Knowle St. Giles, living with his family of four; by the 1881 census, John 54 was a commercial traveller, living in Chard, Somerset; by 1891, John was a brewers agent, living in Chard, with Harriet. John and Harriet had 2 known children. c. Lucy Emma JAMES, born in Kingstone, about 1827 / 28 and baptized there in 1828. In 1852, in Knowle St. Giles, Somerset, Lucy 24 married (1) Robert William SAMSON 34, widower and traveller from London; Robert and Lucy apparently lived in Stalbridge, Dorset, and Robert died there in Q4 of 1856. In 1860, in Knowle St. Giles church, Lucy Emma SAMSON, widow, married (2) John Abraham ROPER, gentleman, of Bristol, her first cousin. John and Lucy lived in Bristol, where John was a wholesale druggist. Lucy and Robert had 2 sons. Lucy and John Abraham had one son and one daughter. d. Henry JAMES, born in Allowenshay, Kingstone, Somerset, about 1830 and baptized in Kingstone in 1830. In 1865, in Chard district, Henry married Charlotte Webber BOND. By the 1881 census, Henry 50 was farming 231 acres in Fords Croft, Crewkerne, Somerset. Henry died, aged 76, in Crewkerne 1906 and was buried in Crewkerne, Henry and Charlotte had only one daughter, Charlotte Webber JAMES. e. Stapleton JAMES, born in Hawkchurch, Devon, and baptized in Kingstone, Somerset, 1832. At the 1841 census, Stapleton 8 was living with his parents in Knowle St. Giles, Somerset, England. Probably in the 1840s, Stapleton migrated to South Australia, where, later, he was a timber licensee and teamster farmer. On January 18th., 1853, in Trinity Church, Adelaide, South Australia, he married Mary Ann NORRELL. Stapleton died in Kooringa, on November 12th., 1917 and was buried in Burra Cemetery; Mary Ann died in Kooringa in 1895. Stapleton and Mary Ann lived in South Australia, including Burra, where they had 7 known children.
