The author of this book on Fauquier Families, John Alcock, spent much time putting these records together; as he indicates, they was lots of room for error and miss-filing as well as some missing years between.......... When I reached this 3rd entry for the surname JAMES, and John I ran into a surprise: JAMES, John. Tax tithe paid by Diana (NOTE: does not say DINAH) JAMES in 1777 with the tithe location being in the NORTHEAST DISTRICT with the commissioner of tax collections under John MOFFITT. In 1781 thru 1793 this same John paid his own tax tithes in the Southern District under commissioners Thomas KEITH and Peter GRANT. There are two MARRIAGE BONDS showing for this John JAMES. one to Elizabeth WRIGHT dated for June 28, 1785 with bonder James WRIGHT; and one to Levisa WOOD dated Jan 8 1787 with bonder Thomas BAHAN. 1781 he is in the Book 7, page 23 as Ensign. 1785 he is in the Minute Book 7, page 256 as a Capt..... 1793 he is in the Minute Book 11, page 32 as a Justice 1798 he is in Minute Book 14, page 237 courts suit against execs of George NEAVILLE in chancery. 1799 he is in Deed Book 14, page 823. "He & Levice (her mark) JAMES 25 acres partly in Stafford to Benjamin PAYNE; wit Henry Rousel PAYNE, Joseph and John JAMES. 1799 Deed Book 14, page 351 listed as voting. I am wondering about the two marriage bonds here; it is obvious that the WRIGHT/JAMES marriage must have been established with a John JAMES as a fact due to will documents. However, this above Deed Book transaction with the marriage Bond of and Deed transaction document with the same two individuals named John and Levice JAMES is rather awkward, The Marriage of John JAMES and Elizabeth "BETSEY" WRIGHT is given by the author of the WASHINGTON ANCESTRY as being June 1783. The John of this marriage is given to have died leaving Betsey WRIGHT/JAMES a widow. WASHINGTON ANCESTRY by Charles Hoppin notes the will writing as 1802 proved in will Book 3, p. 381, Fauquier Co. Children Aldridge, David, Mary who married (unkn. SMITH), Margaret (Married KELLY). Family letters and other material seems to support that Betsy JAMES never re-married and remained a widow until she died in October of 1832. There for, the second Marriage bond is for a different John JAMES. There are three other John JAMES listings yet to be transcribed. I am thinking that the second Marriage is for cousin.............possibly a son of George JAMES. The tithe areas need to be explored and compared for some types of connection facts for both these persons named John JAMES. __________________ Linda M. Thank lthank@turboisp.com __________________
