In a previous posting, Gwen noted "I am just amazed at how many separate families of James there are". Per an email I have from David James, he stated that early in his research he came across a book, "James Families in America," by Wynn James, III. It stated that there are over 120 unrelated James families in North America!! The DNA Project has identified 21 unrelated JAMES clans so far, or about 20% of Wynn James' figure. David said, "I expect it'll take us a few more years to identify most of the different James lineages. As we do, this project will become more and more useful to James family researchers, and established lineages will emerge, making it a lot easier for future family genealogists to tie into the right line!" Although not quite as bad as SMITH or JONES, I bet there may be way more than 120 JAMES lines in the United States.
