    3. Hi all, I received this from Patrick Payne and thought it might be of interest since it has our surnames in it. He is doing much research on the ships to and from England during that time. If you have any queries write him. Most of this info is on his website http://papayne.rootsweb.com. David From: Patrick Payne <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Re: the John and Dorothy Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 23:55:20 -0400 At 09:13 PM 6/11/99 -0400, you wrote: >Sorry. I forgot to mention that the British Captain on the 'William and >John' was John Powell. Regards > Hello everyone, This is going to be a long posting. It is in response to questions about the ships "John & Dorothy", "Rose", and "William & John". It also includes the POWELL and PALMER families, along with lots of other names. If you can wade through, it may mean something to you :-} If anyone out there is subscribed to other lists that include some of these surnames, PLEASE!!! Help me out and post this there if you would. Chances are, I'm subscribed to the list too and will see it and know not to post it again. Thanks everyone! John POWELL (and the POWELL name) is frequently associated with the PAYNE's, as is William PALMER (and the PALMER name). Here is all of the information I have regarding the ship's "WILLIAM and JOHN", and the "ROSE." I've also included what I could on the PALMER and POWELL names. As for passengers, I've capitalized the names of interest involved in the "Network". For more details on the "JOHN & DOROTHY", please refer to my web site as those records are to numerous to list here. I have provided one existing passenger list from her dated 1712, which although this is well after Thomas and John PAYNE would have had any involvement with her, it appears that the ship could have been sold to other members of the "Network" as the names associated with it even in 1712 are familiar to us, as you will see. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The POWELLS: POWELL, John- In an Isle of Wight County, VA land patent of Col. Robert PITT dated 1664 with: Sarah PAINE, Capt. Joseph BRIDGER, William Burge, Robert HEWITT, Thomas CLERKE, Henry JONES, William THOMAS, Mary CLERKE, John WILLIAMS, Henry CLERKE, William FORD, John CLERKE, and John POWELL. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1) POWELL, Joane- In 1650 she is listed with Robert Philpott, deceased, and William REYNOLDS. In records dated 27 May 1671, the port book has the following entries: "Advantage, Thomas OLIVER, master", followed by "Seaflower of Brighton, Derrick PAINE, master, with Sir William HOOKER & Co., merchants", followed immediately by an entry dated 31 May 1671 which begins with "William and Mary of Faversham, William REYNOLDS, master, for Faversham". From these records, it would appear that on 27 May 1671, the ships "Advantage" and the "Seaflower of Brighton" left port together, followed on the 31st by the "William and Mary". Ship's in those days, or today for that matter, don't like to travel alone and normally would form large convoy's and would cross together. Is it coincidence that these names appear together on the same day or within days of each other? Also, please note that in the record of the "William & John" given below, the names, particularly: PHILLIPS, PRICE, and REINOLDS, which seem to connect the ships together. The other names can be found in Payne marriages and other primary sources in Virginia, but in other colonies as well. There are simply so many names here that appear regularly with Payne's, it's hard to list them all! (See also the John REYNOLDS in the will of Thomas PAINE of St. Mary's County, Md.)(Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1) POWELL, John- Listed in 1609 to Virginia aboard the "Swallow" and in 1632 as a Burgess. Also named in the record are William MORGAN, and Oliver JENKINS. I have the word "STARR" beside each of those names and can't remember why. All I can think of is the "Star Chamber" of the King... (Hotten) POWELL, Capt. William- In 1610 Virginia on the "Swan" with Thomas GARRETT, servant (Hotten) POWELL, Jenken- In 1664 Rappahannock County, Va. land patent of Richard Webley, with: Mary PAINE, Robert DAVIS (see Robert PAYNE, aka DAVIES, also given as DAVIS), Thomas Freshwater, James BAYLY, Samuel DELEWARE, Elnathan BRAY, Thomas JENNINGS, Robert CULPEPER, William SABIN, Peter PALMER, Henry WILLIAMS, James WILLIS, Thomas PARKER, Jane GOUGE, Sarah SMITH, Thomas WEST, Jenken POWELL, Dennis CULPEPER, Robert HOPKINS, Edward SMITH, Jesper WRIGHT, William THATCHER (THACKER), William NICHOLLS, George LANE, John TURNER, Hannah BACON, Susanna MARTIN, James PARKER, Robert THOMPSON, John GRIFFIN, Francis PALMER, Thomas CASE, John ELLIOTT. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1) - NOTE: In this one record, we have connections from Virginia to all of the other colonies I keep mentioning. Several New England connections, at least two to Maryland, some even to Newfoundland, the West Country, and to Jersey. Try running a search in my research room on some of these names and watch what happens. I'm eyeballs deep in it and it is still amazing to me every time I look. I always find something new to add support to it all. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1) POWELL, Hugh- in a 1650 N. Rappahannock County land patent of Robert BIRD, with: Thomas PAINE, Perregrine WILLIAMS, William Edmonds, Robert CLERKE, Humphrey CLARKE (I have seen CLERKE and CLARKE used interchangeably before), Thomas Goardon (Jordan), William JAMES, John LANE, Hugh POWELL, James DAVIS (DAVIES), Henry BARLEY (BURLEY?), William WOOD, William SMITH, Jane WILLIAMS. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1) POWELL, Howell- In 1662 Lancaster County land patent of John PAINE, with: Richard COLEMAN, Rice JONES, Howell POWELL, Charles SNEAD (Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1) 1607- Nathaniel POWELL arrived in Virginia. 1621- Nathaniel POWELL named as surveyor of Virginia (a post also held by William CLAIBORNE) 1622- Nathaniel POWELL killed in the massacre of 1622. 1622- Capt. William POWELL, Commander of James City, Commandant. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The PALMERS: PALMER, Edward- resided at Kent Island PALMER, Thomas- is listed aboard the "John & Dorothy" by 1635, in which Thomas and John PAYNE where involved during this time period. Also mentioned in these records are: Joseph HAWES, Lawrance EVANS, Thomas BURLEY, Valentine MUMFORD, Henry FABIAN, Walter HANCOCK, Benjamin BOWDEN, Robert SHAPTON, William ALLEN, Thomas PALMER, Thomas Mullins, Jacob PENNINGTON, Thomas SAINTIE, John WITHERS, Daniel WIBRANTS, Samuel LEIGH (LEE), Jacob Homewood, John MARTIN, Alexander CHEEKE, John TURNER, John JOHNSON, William PRESTON. PALMER, Thomas- listed in A 1664 Westmoreland County land patent of John PALMER, with: Robert PAINE, E. SLY +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ To elaborate on some of the names found above, we find: 1635- Richard HANCOCK is involved with CLAIBORNE in naval battle with Maryland 1638- Thomas ALLEN was installed as Commissioner of the Court at Kent Island 1654- Richard PRESTON submitted a petition before the Virginia Governor from "North of the Pax" complaining about Maryland. CLEMENT, master 1664- The WEST Family. One record above gives the name Thomas WEST. We also have regular appearances by Francis and Nathaniel WEST, who spring from the Lord DELAWARE, Thomas WEST. BACON, Hannah- any relation to Nathaniel? MARTIN, Susanna- In 1606, John MARTIN (see the "Dilligent" that brought PAINE's to New England for which he was master) was named a Councillor of the new colony at Virginia. In 1624, John MARTIN returns to Virginia from London and is named a member of the council under Sir Francis Wyatt. In 1634, John MARTIN is master of the "Dilligent to New England". In 1638, Henry MARTEN, Judge of the Admiralty, meets with William CLAIBORNE about the naval battle with Marylanders of 1635 (the first Naval Battle in our History). In 1676, John MARTIN in the "Friends Increase to Virginia with John JENNINGS, merchant. ELLIOTT, John- A John ELLIOTT is named as Father-in-Law of Thomas PAINE. Any relationship between John ELLIOTT and Lt. Col. Anthony ELLYOTTE on the Virginia Council in 1658?
