    1. How many different James families?
    2. Susan Rosine
    3. In a previous posting, Gwen noted "I am just amazed at how many separate families of James there are". Per an email I have from David James, he stated that early in his research he came across a book, "James Families in America," by Wynn James, III. It stated that there are over 120 unrelated James families in North America!! The DNA Project has identified 21 unrelated JAMES clans so far, or about 20% of Wynn James' figure. David said, "I expect it'll take us a few more years to identify most of the different James lineages. As we do, this project will become more and more useful to James family researchers, and established lineages will emerge, making it a lot easier for future family genealogists to tie into the right line!" Although not quite as bad as SMITH or JONES, I bet there may be way more than 120 JAMES lines in the United States.

    3. My brick wall is not far back at all. I'm only sure who my Great-GrandFather was: James Edwin James....no further back than that. Judging from what few census records he is listed on, he was born ca1845. He fought in the Civil War in the Confederate Army. There were Jameses in Southampton County, Va whom he referred to (in what few letters he wrote and we have seen)as his "brothers". However, I have found this VA family in the census back to 1850 and he is not listed with them. Also he did not inherit from the estate of the father of the other Jameses. We located descendants of that VA family(still living there on the same farm in Southampton County, VA)back in the 1950's but nobody remembers him specifically. However, my GGF left VA and went to southern Illinois after the Civil War and one cousin there in Southampton County, VA knew about a James relative "out in Illinois" although he did not know who it was. We have a copy of an old letter that one of the VA "broth! ers" wrote to my great-grand-mother in Illinois after my GGF died. The letter referred to my Great grandmother as "Dear Sister". If you say this is confusing, join the club. The James kin of ours who live in VA today have a distinct physical resemblance to my Jameses, so there has to be a close link somewhere. They were unique in their appearance because they have an olive complexion, brown eyes, small stature and thick, course black hair. I have old photos of my grandfather and he looked like one of the characters from a movie about the mafia. Quite an interesting guy to have for a grandfather. Is there anyone who has info about James in Southampton County, VA or maybe in the northeast corner of North Carolina.....O or how about Maryland? 1. Roll Call anyone? David James Chester co, PA
    2. Susan Rosine
    3. If anyone is interested in a Roll Call, I'll start. My earliest known JAMES is David James. He was born about 1669 in Wales, and died in 1739 in Chester county, PA; buried at the Great Valley Baptist Church. First wife unknown, second wife Jane--Jane almost certainly NOT the mother of David's children. His children were: Evan m. Margaret Jones Thomas m. Mary Jones, Sarah Henderson Isaac Sarah m. Jenkin Thomas Rebecca m. John Miles I would like more information on David's children, especially Isaac, Sarah, and Rebecca. I would also like to know if there is any connection for this David JAMES to another David JAMES who came to Chester co, PA in 1682, and died before 1702. He was a Quaker, and had a wife Margaret and daughter Mary. Some have said they are actually one and the same man, but since they died in different years this cannot be so. Thanks, Susan

    3. We have the new 12 marker results back for William James sponsored by Patsy James Paterson. FTDNA is saying that he has no matches, but when you look at Richard Dale and Doyle Roland you see that they have a mutation on the 11th marker. Now because this is a genetic distance of 2 on this marker they count it as no match! I am not sure about that. You really need the 25 marker test on all of these R1b Haplogroup men. It does seem interesting that they are so close. Here is the explanation from FTDNA. When comparing people’s samples in our system we show individuals who are closely matched, but not identically matched, as being different by what the Anthropologists call genetic distance. If two people were identical in all markers except they are off in one marker by 1 point, the genetic distance would be 1. If they were off at 2 different markers by 1 point in each marker, then the genetic distance of those two samples would be 2. If they were off by 2 points at one marker and 1 point in a second marker, then the genetic distance would be 3. This is called the Stepwise Model of calculating genetic distance for shallow time depths. 3. Hi James Group: Richard Dale James received his 25 marker DNA test results this evening and he and Doyle James maintained their match with a genetic distance of two markers. This means according to FTDNA that there is a 49.03% chance that they have a common ancestors in the last 300 years, a 67.45% chance in the last 400 years, 80.43% chance in 500 years and 88.74% in 600 years. You can check the James DNA website to see the family lines of everyone entered into the James DNA test. We hope there will be more of you that will enter the James DNA test. We have four new tests that are now at the testing Lab at the University of Arizona and another test was returned to the FTDNA today and will go to the Lab on Friday. http://www.jamesdna.net 42754 Richard Dale James R1b 13 24 14 11 11 14 12 12 12 13 13 29 16 9 9 11 11 25 15 19 30 15 15 15 17 25727 Doyle Roland James R1b 13 24 14 11 11 14 12 12 12 13 13 29 16 9 9 11 11 25 15 19 31 15 15 17 17 10 11 19 23 16 16 19 17 37 40 11 12 Gwen Boyer Bjorkman gwenbj@seanet.com -----Original Message----- From: info@familytreedna.com [mailto:info@familytreedna.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 06, 2005 4:00 PM To: jamesdm49@aol.com; gwenbj@seanet.com Subject: New DNA Test Results Posted for a Group Member in Group James New Y-DNA13-25 results have been posted for Kit 42754, a member of your James group. Now the bad news is that Troy has 52 matches with other names, but no matches with anyone in our James DNA test. So he will be starting another new James line. Then Batch 129 must have just gone to the Lab today with Charles Roy James 25 marker test now due back on Jan 13 and Jan 27. We should have the 25 markers back for Richard Dale James by Dec. 8. 2. Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving. This was just too good not to share with all my cousins as we search .......this came from another list I am on.. The "Census Taker" It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ........ a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ..... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ..... the best she was able. He asked of her children ..... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not quite two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the colour, the age .. The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? Or Oregon ..... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some and write some ..... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God Bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ..... it's now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voices in our heart. Author Unknown Lynda Lynda

This offers a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with our European roots and other branches which have formed in other countries and to apply scientific tests to confirm or deny various theories as to where our roots were prior to the migration to the western hemisphere. FTDNA also now has provision for participants to belong to 2 surname projects at the same time so a person belonging to another group could also belong to the James Surname DNA project as well. 3. I have updated the page for descendants of Elias James (b. 1770-1780) that resided in Franklin County, Alabama. This includes old photographs. Some allied surnames include Grissom, Vaughn, George, Britnell, Hester, Malone, Richardson, Bonds, Culligan. A nice photo of C.C. Grissom's place up on Caine Creek near Tuscumbia as well. Also a Pogo community photograph of dozens of people (most unidentified) infront of an old barn. http://www.stlouistimeportal.com/james/ --Scott Williams

    3. Hi James List: The 13-25 DNA results are back tonight for Lee Allyn James and he is a perfect match with the rest of the Chester Co, PA family group. Wilbur Gene James has just the one mutation. So this is definitely our largest group of matched results. You can get on the website and see each one of their family lines. We hope that more people from the Chester Co and Bucks Co PA lines will join the DNA test. http://www.jamesdna.net David James of Chester Co, PA Group 35874 Warren James R1b 13 25 14 10 11 15 12 12 12 14 13 30 17 9 10 11 11 25 15 19 29 15 15 16 17 37879 Wilbur Gene James R1b 13 25 14 10 11 15 12 12 12 14 13 31 17 9 10 11 11 25 15 19 29 15 15 16 17 40303 Joe M.
