    3. Well then, Norman, if you are a unique James family line we would love to have you join the James DNA test. We are still trying to get someone from each of those separate 120 different James lines in this country. But you may be surprised and match someone else. We would love that! See the James DNA website at: http://www.jamesdna.net Which reminds me that we still have two Christmas gift certificates from FTDNA that will help two of you pay for either the 25 marker test or the 37 marker test. Hope to hear from you today. Any questions? Gwen Boyer Bjorkman gwenbj@seanet.com -----Original Message----- From: Norman V. 3. Hi Lee, I recognize your line, tho you didn't put any dates or places for anyone LOL! I also descend from David, through his son Evan, brother to Thomas. There has been quite the discussion going on for the past 20 years or so about whether David and Margaret are really the parents of Thomas & Evan. David, a Quaker who came to PA in 1682, died before 1708. Therefore, he could not be the same David who had a wife named Jane, and was a Baptist at the time of his death in 1739. David "The Baptist" was definitely the father of Thomas and Evan. Hope this helps! 2. Susan Rosine wrote: Although not quite as bad as SMITH or JONES, I bet there may be way more than 120 JAMES lines in the United States I'm sure Susan is right. For the record, according to the US Census Bureau, the JAMES surname ranked 71st in frequency in the US population in 1990 -- .105% of the population (1/10 of 1%), or about one person in every 1,000. So, out of 248,709,873 people in the US in 1990, approximately 250,000 bore the surname JAMES In 1996 in the U.K., by contrast, 81,301 people bore the surname JAMES (1.63% of the total population) and it ranked 44 in frequency So far, in our James DNA study, we have 22 different lines among the 28 people for whom we have results. In other words, only about 25% of the people tested share a common ancestor. If this ratio were to hold true over time, and we assume 1,000 living James-surname descendants on average per progenitor in 1990, then there would be about 180-190 different James lines in the U.S and 50-60 in the UK. One expects that the UK lines would be well-represented in the US and elsewhere. It will be interesting to see what our surname project turns up over time. David James

She married William SHARP (1756-Oct.6,1832), on Sep.15,1782 in Baltimore Co.,MD, and moved to Casey Co.,KY and had 5 children there. 3. Here is the response from Eileen Krause of FTDNA about that two step mutation that was found on the DNA test for Patsy James Paterson's William James DNA test. This was the test that we thought should match Doyle and Richard James. Patsy, we really need to have you order that 25 marker test for William James. Gwen Boyer Bjorkman gwenbj@seanet.com -----Original Message----- From: Eileen Krause [mailto:eileen.krause@usernet.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 13, 2005 12:53 PM To: gwenbj@seanet.com Subject: RE: New DNA Test Results Posted for a Group Member in Group James Hello Gwen, I agree that we would need to see more markers from William James. I'm also putting in his kit for marker review with the lab for DYS392, since it is different by two steps from the others. It is a rather high result, but it's possible for even the slower-moving markers to make a leap in a single mutation. The FTDNATiP Calculator assumes that any difference of more than one in a marker took place in a single mutation. E-mail any time, Eileen Krause Anthrogenealogy Response Center Family Tree DNA http://www.familytreedna.com 713-868-1438 ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: "Gwen Boyer Bjorkman" <gwenbj@seanet.com> Date: Fri, 9 Dec 2005 14:05:52 -0800 We have the new 12 marker results back for William James sponsored by Patsy James Paterson. FTDNA is saying that he has no matches, but when you look at Richard Dale and Doyle Roland you see that they have a mutation on the 11th marker. Now because this is a genetic distance of 2 on this marker they count it as no match! I am not sure about that. You really need the 25 marker test on all of these R1b Haplogroup men. It does seem interesting that they are so close. Here is the explanation from FTDNA. When comparing people's samples in our system we show individuals who are closely matched, but not identically matched, as being different by what the Anthropologists call genetic distance. If two people were identical in all markers except they are off in one marker by 1 point, the genetic distance would be 1. If they were off at 2 different markers by 1 point in each marker, then the genetic distance of those two samples would be 2. If they were off by 2 points at one marker and 1 point in a second marker, then the genetic distance would be 3. This is called the Stepwise Model of calculating genetic distance for shallow time depths. But you see that the 24th marker has a genetic distance of 2 besides the genetic distance of 1 on the 21st marker. So how can that be? I going to copy to FTDNA for an explanation.
