This guy shouldn't be that hard...but haven't been able to connect to any other families after 25 years. William JAMES, reports on 1850 LaPorte Co Indiana census that he was b. ca 1814 in Tennessee. He married Elizabeth JOHNSON in LaPorte Co, in 1834. They had the following children: Ruth b. ca 1837-died in Holt Co, MO George b. ca 1841--was in the Civil War from Missouri; no further info Sara Ann b. 1843-m. Christopher TITUS in Holt Co MO, Their daughter married a BRIDGMAN. Descendants in northwest Missouri and southeast Nebraska. (My line.) Hannah b. ca 1844---on 1840 school census as age 6, but she is younger than Sara and I know Sara's birthdate. She was not on 1850 census-- may have died or confused with Hiram Hiram b. ca 1846--may be same person as Hannah. Have never found any other data. Samuel b. ca 1849--no other information Wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Johnson James m. Eldred CHURCHILL in Holt Co, Missouri about 1853. I don't know what happened to William. There was apparently a William who married an Anna Bell CRAFT in 1860 in Indiana. Wondering if these two Williams could be one in the same. 1847 School Census in LaPorte Co, IN indicates that there were two other children living with this family: They were Thomas WATSON b. ca 1840 and Nancy WATSON b. ca 1833. I wonder who these children are. They may be a clue to William's lineage. Does anyone have a JAMES family in Tennessee whose descendants went to Indiana in the 1830's? Does anyone have a JAMES from Tennessee or Indiana with a WATSON connection? Any clues will be welcome. Thanks....Merri
The earliest James ancestor I have found is John JAMES, abt 1810- abt 1865 Born abt 1810 probably in Virginia, maybe North Carolina. John James is listed as a pioneer family in the book "The First 100 Years, a short History of Cobb County, in Georgia." Also found in 1834 Georgia state census in Cobb Co. Found in 1830, 1840 & 1850 census in Cobb Co., Georgia. Found in 1860 census in Cherokee Co., Georgia. Wife found in 1870 census in Cherokee Co., Georgia, so he probably died between 1860 and 1870. Wife- Sarah A. -?-. Children- John W., Martha, Frances, Harriett, Elizabeth, Emma and Asberry. My line from John is as follows: John W. JAMES, 1828-30 GA- ??, wife- Sarah ?? Ezra JAMES, 1853 GA-abt. 1920, Baylor Co. TX, wife Carry Chandler then Regina ?? Patmon JAMES, 1884 GA or AR-1974, Arkansas Co., AR, wife Ethel Carter then Macy ?? Many thanks for any help. Fred James. I need to find his parents' names and am looking in Virginia first. All help and advice appreciated. Thanks, Fred James

Hi All Our earliest JAMES name is John JAMES who was a peddler in Wales. No other details known. His son was Thomas JAMES (may have had Henry as a second name) born c 1860 in Pontymoile, Wales. He was also a peddler. He married Rosa Ann HAYCOTT (or HAYCOCK) on 25 Dec 1881 in the Parish Church of Llanvihangel, Pontymoile. Their family were: Thomas Henry JAMES (Tom) born 4 Feb 1885 in Pontypool, Wales & died 8 July 1961 in Napier, New Zealand. He married Mary Elizabeth HANDS (Lizzie) 0n 20 April 1908 in Blaydon, Newcastle John JAMES born 20 September 1887 in Pontypool, Wales & died 10 June 1959 in Napier, New Zealand. He married Meggie DIXON in Blaydon on 21 February, 1911. John & Meggie were my husband Jim (James)'s grandparents. They brought their family of 2 girls, Rosa Ann JAMES (Jim's mother) & Caroline JAMES to New Zealand in 1925. Ernest Llewellyn JAMES (Llewellyn) born 1896 in Narbeth, England. Killed in action in France in 1914-18 war. Burnes May JAMES born Sept 1900 in Lanchester, England & died 5 November 1961 In Napier , NZ. She married John Robert BEST (Bob) in Blaydon. I have family details of all these, but need to get information on the earlier JAMES family. Tom & .Lizzie JAMES' sons were Thomas Henry (Harry) & Llewellyn. Harry always claimed he was the third Thomas Henry JAMES, but on his grandparent's marriage certificate (Thomas JAMES & Rosa Ann HAYCOTT) he is only recorded as Thomas. As an aside - the family always said Rosa Ann's surname was HAYCOCK, & on some census records it says HAYCOCK & others HAYCOTT. My mother-in-law was named Rosa Ann after her.
