TAXPAYERS LISTS IN GEORGIA; Georgia Tax Index, 1789-99 database information key: Before this century, taxation was often based on property ownership. As a result of this, and other cultural constraints, most of those taxed were male landowners. This database reflects some of these realities in late 18th Century Georgia. Listing over 11,500 persons, this database is an index of tax records held by the state government. It reveals the name of the taxpayer, county and district of residence, and year of the taxation record. For those seeking ancestors from Georgia, this database can be a source of valuable information. Source Information: Jeffery, Alice. Georgia Tax Index. Orem, UT: Ancestry, Inc., 1998. JAMES, E. If you are looking in the southeastern belt for history or family ancestors I would recommend checking the Guilford College Library in Greensboro, North Carolina for their Quaker Collection material. There are over 6,000 manuscripts from monthly meetings from East Tennessee, Georgia, and south Carolina which affiliated with the North Carolina meetings. also recommended in my reading list is the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, vol. 1. published by Genealogical Publishing Co. The Quakers kept very good records and where records were lost in fire or war, they may mean the difference in your search. The Quakers were in North Carolina at least as early ads 1672 according to my reading, with the arrival and travels of George Fox and William Edmundson. Linda
I have the lists from 1741 thru 1868 formated in county and date form with bondsman, ministers, and bond numbers for lookups Linda

Good morning James List: We have received another new 37 marker test that was ordered by Lisa James Delgado for a James family member and he does have a match!! There is just a one marker mutation between him and the 25 marker test for William James which was ordered by Patsy James Paterson. So now Lisa and Patsy will have to get together and see how they are related. It looks like maybe Harmon and Buchanan James could be brothers. They are in the right age group and both born in NC and moved to TN. Hi James List: Timothy L. James received his 37 marker test results today. Lucy DeYoung has sponsored this test for two cousins and this just shows how there can be one or two mutations even among close family members. Linda, Thanks for posting this. A very minor correction for you on the witnesses (the actual will is hard to read, so I have seen this error pop up elsewhere). Maurice Llewellyn Junior is one witness, and John Lewellin is the other witness. In the will, the abbreviation for Junior looks like Jos., and the two names are run together, making it look as though Jos is the first name for John. Howell JAMES was a Quaker who came from Monmouthshire to Chester county, PA in 1684. He may've been married to "Elizabeth" in Wales, but if so, she must've died, because his wife Gwenllian died shortly after their arrival in PA. Howell married twice after that, but I think all his male children (Phillip, James, William, Howell junior)were with Elizabeth and/or Gwenllian. Howell died in 1717 in New Castle county, Delaware. He named several sons and grandsons in his will. But there are many men with similar names in the same area, so it is somewhat uncertain which ones were actually Howell's sons. So, it would be helpful if any male who thinks they descend from Howell participates in the DNA test to sort everything out! Who is Howell James and what date was he born. Unfortunately as I have said before I have not gone back very far with my family tree from Glamorgan in the late 1800's yet but I do have 5 living male with the surname James. I find it so hard researching the James surname. to go with the posting of yesterday about the JAMES family of John and Dinah of Spotsylvania, Virginia.; according to THE JAMES FAMILY history book which I have from the American Genealogical Research Institute, these men are listed as revolutionary war heroes and/or patriots John JAMES; born 1752, died after 1795; married to Dinah HAYNES; private in a Maryland unit. Thomas JAMES; born 1756; died 12 September 1842; married (1st) to Elizabeth McFALL, and (2nd) to Mary EGAN; private in a Maryland unit. With the closeness of the birth ages and the location of the entry into the militia I would suggest these two men are likely related in some manner. All the surnames in these marriages are worthy of research to see if there is, in fact, any common grounds. Especially if you have east coast roots that migrated via any direction to Virginia or the Carolinas and Kentucky on the way west; or even if they stayed on the coast. Linda Thank.
