    1. [JAMES-L] 1890 Census Records
    2. Glenn Belcher
    3. We really do need the 1890 Census, however, this was burned in 1921. At the time, the census schedules were located in the basement of the Commerce Building in Washington, D. C. Even though the fire was contained, it flooded the area. The damage was not assessed until the following day, and it was noted that the census records soaked in the water overnight outside the protected vault area. The schedules were dried out, re-copied. But it was impossible to restore them. So? They should still be intact, yes? In 1932 Congress authorized certain documents to be destroyed, which included the original 1890 schedules. Then, in 1934, the remaining schedules were destroyed by the Department of Commerce. Some of the mid-western census records are still available. For example, the 1890 Illinois schedules were later found, and again in 1953, when some fragmented schedules were discovered. Family History Centers have microfilmed these fragmented schedules which consist mostly of mid-western states, and then, not all counties, or enumeration districts are in tact. Jeannette H. 2. Steve Roper
    3. Does anyone have this story in their line? If so, we are related. John James was a mariner from Liverpool England. He had a son John. On a trip to Baltimore MD, son John about age 15 jumped ship and disappeared. He was later indentured to a "VA Planter". I am trying to locate the particulars of this story and document them in court records. Any help would be appreciated. These James later had several men in the Rev War and were in the areas of Anson and Richmond NC for many years. Regina Roper

    3. Pat, My James line comes from Washington Co, PA also, but begins with a Thomas C James who married a Molly Downey. Thomas was born about 1745 possibly in Germany before immigrating to the US (possibly Philadelphia first then Washington Co, PA). Is this James line related to your Samuel? 3. Hi Cathy and list, Our family story is that we are related thru Pleasant and Annie James of TN, He did have a son named Jessy who lived in the area (Mills County, TX) for awhile. As far as I can tell, he was not wanted by the law. I can not verify the Great Grandmother Adeline Pace James was missing part of her arm or how she lost it but feel pretty certain it was not shot off by Pinkerton Men as the family story goes. I wrote the editor of the mag and he has given me permission to put this page on line about the article and he is going to try and have Betty Duke contact me. The page is at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3927/betty.html and has some more of the article and about the cost and ISBN for the book she published.and I will any anyone's comments to the page if they want to make any. I am sort of house bound and been working on pages, hopefully I will be able to get out and do more research. James is not in our direct line but married into it several times that I always watch for any information on them. Good luck with your research Sharon Cathy Baker wrote: > At 04:21 PM 1/4/99 -0600, [email protected] wrote: > > >As all of us with James in our families, have probably heard that we > >were somehow related to the famous Jesse James. > than that as this Jesse was born almost 50 years before the outlaw Jesse > James. We were told that we were related to Jesse James through our Mary James who is the daughter of Edward Victor James of Lancaster, PA. However, what I've been able to find is that Mary had a BROTHER named Jesse James, who moved to Indiana. Haven't researched further than that as this Jesse was born almost 50 years before the outlaw Jesse James. But family historians still say that we definitely are related to him, so, who knows for sure??? Good luck to all of us searching these James. Cathy Have a wonderful day! 3. Since before I was born my James line and my Williams line have held family reunions every year. Every year they compiled what information they could from these reunions and family members interested in our history. After this information is compiled, each family member who wants a copy sends their money to Mrs. Francis Nelson and she makes a copy for them. The James family book has not been compiled since 1980 because the family members that were doing it have gotten older and some have passed away. The Williams family book has been compiled a little longer but again family members that were doing it are older. After you recieve your first book, they mail out new information to be added each year. I doubt if any of these books are still available to even new family members who want one, unless one of us is willing to make a copy of ours. Which I am willing to do, if I can do it properly without destroying my book. The book is beginning to yellow on the James family book. My Williams family book I have put into protective plastic but had to pull the book apart to do it. I did donate one Williams book to the Hendersonville Genealogical Society and allowed them to copy my James family book. They now have a copy on their shelves. I am trying to keep these books going but its taking me awhile as although they have great biographis and history written by each family member, they do not show actual birth, death, marriage, census records. I would like to make them as accurate as possible. Also, some names were misspelled or speeled diferently in two different places. Including my daughters name. they do have pictures in the Williams family book but under my brothers family they put my other brothers name and his family. So there are mistakes. It does cost to get accurate documentation and I am not a rich person so it will take me a very long time. I figure I have about 1700 names.
