For Jane Ingram, Palm Desert, CA Re: George W. James of Deerfield NH I do not have a George W. James, rather a George H. in the History of Deerfield, written in 1878 (unfortunately, I cannot find the author citation in my notes). Neither is a George James in the Ye Old Cemetery, although my notes show that that cemetery is in Raymond, NH, not Deerfield. Here is the James family section in the History of Deerfield: JAMES FAMILY. John James was born January 9, 1752, settled at the Parade, where his daughter, Sally W., now resides, coming from Kensington, and died about 1845, aged about eighty years. His wife was Hannah, daughter of Ezekiel Worthington (Note: the actual name is Worthen) of Kensington, born July 17, 1752, and died September 2, 1829. Their children were: (1) Moses, born March 12, 1777; (2) Hannah, born October 30, 1778; (3) Mary W., born December 27, 1780; (4) Ezekiel W., born January 19, 1783; (5) Enoch, born September 1, 1785; (6) Mercy, born July 22, 1788; (7) Sally W., born June 4, 1790; (8) Elizabeth L., born October 15, 1792; (9) John, born October 8, 1794, now living in Deerfield. Moses lived and died in Lowell, Mass. His wife was Martha Young of Deerfield. They left children: Josiah Shepard, who resides in Raymond; Jacob, who lives in Manchester; Hannah, who nursed the mother of the present Gen. B. F. Butler at his birth, and died on the homestead; Mary W., who married John Eastman, and died, leaving children, one of whom, Enoch, lives in Eldora, Ia., who has been lieutenant-governor of that state; Ezekiel W., who lived and died on the homestead, marrying Lucy French of Newmarket, leaving nine children, one of whom, Susan, is the wife of Moses Brown, son of Dr. Stephen Brown; Enoch, who married Eliza Bean of Candia for his first wife, and for his second, Judith Marden of Portsmouth, and is now living in Deerfield, aged eighty-six years; his son Frederick Plummer, who resides in New York, does not forget the place of his nativity, but expends his resources in improving and beautifying the homestead, and in making happy his friends, as well as in bestowing a public benefaction in erecting, at great expense, an elegant school-house in the district where his youth was instructed...." "JAMES FAMILY, -- SECOND BRANCH Benjamin James came from Kensington, and settled on North Road, at what is called Rand's Corner. He died about 1822, aged about eighty-six years. His wife was a Garland, who died about 1827, aged about eighty-five years. Their children were: -- (1) Huldah, who married John Kenniston, and died in Wilmot, with her daughters, who became wives of gentlemen named White, brothers. (2) Hannah, who married Timothy Batchelder of Deerfield, has one daughter, Sarah, now the wife of Joseph Hoagg, living on the Batchelder homestead. (3) Jonathan, who was born April 13, 1779, married, March 23, 1802, Hannah, daughter of John Batchelder, born October 31, 1775 and their children were: (1) John B., born July 11, 1803, married Esther Dalton, born April 16, 1805, and died August 4, 1833, leaving one daughter, who married Gilman P. Rand of Deerfield, who has one son; this Esther Dalton was from North Hampton; Mr. John B. James is deacon in the Baptist Church, and he married, for his second wife, Sarah Whittier of Deerfield, born in 1812, and died February 17, 1874; and their children are: Myra S., who married William Whittier of Deerfield; Charles L., who lives on the homestead; and Ella F., who is a graduate of the Normal School at Bridgewater, Mass and is a teacher in Fall River; (2) Julia, sister of John B. James, was born April 21, 1805, and maried Edmund Rand, Esq., of Deerfield, August 19, 1828 (see sketch); (3) Asa James, born May 14, 1807, died January 14, 1830; (4) Timothy B., born November 29, 1809, married, for his first wife, Sophia Page, who had two sons: Asa and GEORGE H., now living in Deerfield; his second wife was Dorotha Fogg, who had no children; his third was a widow Sanborn; (5) Jeremiah Garland, born October 3, 1811, married Elizabeth Ladd of Deerfield, who lives near Thomas Veasey, and they have four children: Julia, who married Andrew Silver, of the firm Silver and Robinson, of Epsom; Woodbury, who lives in Boston; Alva, who resides in Montreal; and Leroy, who lives on the homestead, with his father; (6) William Henry Harrison, born August 19, 1815, married Hannah Dalton of Deerfield, where they reside, and have three children, Hannah, the wife of George H. James, Charles H., who lives with his father, and Fred E. (4) Eunice, fourth child of Benjamin James, the first settler, married Jacob Freese, whose sketch may be consulted. (5) Benjamin, fifth child of Benjamin, lived and died in Wilmot." Ann Morton (see my earlier posting) may have more for you....Good luck.
Still looking for information about Leborn(Leban) James and his wife Martha F. (no surname). They were both born in Alabama. On the 1860 Angelina Co., TX census he is listed as 39 and she is listed as 26. They had the following children at that time: Pleasant listed as 7 years old born in TX Eliza C. listed as 1 years old born in TX Martha is later found in the 1880 Milam Co., TX census living with her son, but no husband is listed. At this time she was 46 and could have remarried. I have not been able to find a burial place for either Leborn or Martha. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sally in WA
As many of those on this listserve may already know, most of the NH James family members are connected back to a James that arrived at Barnstable MA in the 1600's. Please contact Ann Morton at [email protected], she is a genealogist working on the descendants of the James family of New England, particularly with regard to the restoration of the James house in Hampton, NH and the formation of a new James house society to be comprised of descendants. Also, you may be interested in the USGenWeb project for Deerfield, NH (see http://w3.nai.net/~lmerrell/deerfield.html). There is also, through the New Hampshire GenWeb page, links to cemeteries. If you look for Ye Old Cemetery, you'll find a huge James burial ground. I'll see if I can find a George listed through those files, or the Gendex James files, and let you know what I find.... n a message dated 2/8/99 5:16:41 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << am looking for any information on George W. I am Thurston James Sherman Oaks CA I'm looking for some of the history of Volney James b.(1821) I know a lot but I want more! Volney married his 1st cousin,Martha James m.(1845) They had two children Burilla Carolyn James b.(1846) and 'Brud' William Mosby James b.(1849) Volney lived in Ohio Co. Kentucky He left with his family (he was one of four families) to go to Corning Arkansas, just before the Civil War -- 1861 After the war, the families went back to Kentucky. All but Volney! His wife and children went back with the group, but somehow Volney did not make the trip home. He was about 40 years old. MY QUESTION -- does the name "Volney James" sound familiar to anyone? Hi all. My line is almost the same as that of Jennifer James Taylor. I am a desc of John James and Mary Pierce of Anson Co and Richmond Co NC through we BELIEVE their son PHILLIP b 19 Apr 1771 who married Phebe Long. Phillip was the elder brother of Israel. However, it is POSSIBLE but not LIKELY that I am a desc of the 2nd child JOHN born 4 Dec 1773 who married Mary Snead. This line of James came from Liverpool and Wiltshire in England and has the following specifics that we have located: Roger James "of Yonger" married Alice Marks in 1632 in West Lavington, Wiltshire Roger James II chr 18 May 1646 at West Lavington, Wiltshire is supposed to have married Anne Mercer c 1680 and had these children: Jane, Eleanor, JOHN John James bapt 18 Feb 1692 Liverpool England at St Nicholas, the "Mariner's Church" m ?? His father was a sea merchant. The story is he ran away from his father's ship in Baltimore MD and was indentured to a VA planter as a "lost boy" (I have not yet located this record). He later went to NC to the area of Anson Co. My brick wall: Green Berry James is in 1850 Monroe Co., AL census, married to Gymyma. He is from GA and b. ca 1805. Their known children are Abel b. ca 1832 and Burrell B. b. ca 1828. Green received a land patent in Monroe Co. in 1840. It was later transferred to James M. Griffith, then later to G. W. Coker in 1847. I assume Green died by 1856 as his wife issued a quit claim on the land then. IN 1853, Burrell married Sarah Jane Humphrey in Monroe Co. They were in Clarke Co., MS by 1860 census, as was his mother. Burrell and Sarah Jane had 4 children: F. L., a male, 6, b. in AL; M.M., male, 4, also b. AL; E.A., 2 , b. MS (who is Elizabeth Fidelia, my husband's great grandmother); and Frank, 4 months. Burrell served in the 5th MS Infantry, Co., D. After 1860, the Jameses just evaporate, except for Elizabeth Fidelia, aka Dolly, who married T.J. Hardee in 1880. HOPE SOMEONE KNOWS THESE FOLKS!
