The following is an excerpt taken from the,"Clarke County Historical Society Quarterly" Vol 6, No.3 - Winter 1982 THE CASE OF THE MISSING KIMBELL CHILD REVISITED "Every Clarke County, AL history buff knows the story of the Kimbell-James Massacre and of the loss of the young Kimbell child. The name of the young boy and what happened to him on that fateful day in 1813 has always been a mystery. The following letter to President Louis Finlay, quoted in part, concerns the case.......... ......."My Great-great grandfather was JOHN CALHOUN KIMBERL. He was married in Monroe County in 1848 to Sarah Jane Nettles. He was supposedly 37 at the time. The story handed down thru our family was that he was one of two survivors of the 1813 massacre and was about 2 years old at the time. He was raised by a family we do not know, but this accounted for the spelling of the name. My grandmother died when I was rather young, but her older sister remembered well his telling of how he had been told of his survival. I have just started research on our family tree and have come across Isham Kimbell and his recollections of the massacre. He does not mention a younger brother, but the history, "The Kimbell-Rivers-Woodson House" tells of his carrying his baby brother thru the woods and falling down near the creek and not being able to locate him. Would you venture an opinion if this could have, in fact, been my grandfather and would you know of any way I could corroborate this story? Mrs. Jeanett Hurst Mr. Finlay replied to Mrs Hurst that Mrs. E.R. McDonald had talked with Mr. Clifton James of Whatley, a descendant of Abner James, who said James and his family moved to Monroe County, AL after the massacre. They ventured that the Kimbell child could have been found and moved with the James family." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------- Now to the present....Anyone who might could shed some light on this interesting problem is urged to contact me...it would be something if the mystery could be solved after 185 years... Thank you, Mary Ann Bell [email protected]
Does anyone have any information concerning John and Sally James of Brunswick Co., Va. They had a daughter named Sally who married Peter R. Foster in Brunswick Co. on 2-22-1803. I am particularly interested in determining if John and Sally James had another daughter named Nancy, who married Peter R. Foster's brother, Samuel. Any information will be appreciated. Bob Jones

My GGGF James James has an unknown birth and death date and place. However, in 1838 he married in Southampton County, VA Sarah "Sally" M. Harrison b 1821. In the 1840 census for that county there is a James James residence containing numerous males but only two females, one a child and the other in the age grouping that would include Sarah. If this is my James James family, it is the only record I know of that James and Sarah lived together. The 1850 census shows Sarah living with her mother Catherine C.Harrison b 1800 VA along with Sarah's siblings and three of her four children(all males). The fourth son was my GGF James Edwin James b ca1845. Neither my GGF nor Sarah's husband James James is anywhere to be found. The people in that household(Catherine C. Harrison, apparently a widow, as head)included: Catherine C. Harrison b 1800 VA Sarah M. James b 1821 VA Allen J. Harrison b 1823 VA Hannah A. Harrison b 1825 VA Andrew J. Harrison b 1828 VA Elizabeth H. Harrison b 1832 VA Benfon F. Harrison (M) b 1836 VA Nathaniel T. James b 1840 VA(killed at Antietam) Allen B. James b 1843 VA(actually his name was Benjamin Allen James and was called "Allen") Joshua Cummins James b 1846 NC( the only one b outside VA) If there is anyone out there in genealogy land who knows of these people, Jameses or Harrisons or both, all information will be gratefully accepted. I am seeking information on MARY ANN JAMES, b 1805 KY, married before 1823 to JONATHON DINNING/DENNING, b 1801 TN. Would like to have any information concerning Mary Ann. She and her husband were in SIMPSON COUNTY, KY, in 1829 when their son DAVID JAMES DINNING was born. Other children were: MARTHA JANE, MARGARET ANN b @ 1823, and JAMES DAVID, b @ 1827. MARY ANN and JONATHON were in Coles County, Illinois by 1847 when their daughter MARGARET was married to JAMES N. MINOR. MARTHA JANE married JOHN POTTER in Coles COUNTY in 1850. The family is found on the 1860 census of Edgar COunty, Illinois. During the fall of 1969, Mary Ann and her family traveled by wagon to Nebraska. Winter forced them to lay over in Fremont County, Iowa, until the Spring thaw. By the 1880 Nebraska census, Mary Ann is listed as living with her son DAVID and a nephew JOHN POTTER. This is the last we hear of Mary Ann James Dinning. Her husband died between 1860 and 1880. We have nothing about her husband Jonathon after 1860. If any of this sounds familiar to anyone, PLEASE contact me. I will gladly share info. thanks in advance....Brenda Dinning Easterday _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!?
