    1. [JAMES-L] ROLLCALL
    2. Boice Burns
    3. ROLLCALL Looking for information on James James(birth date and place unk) who in 1839 in Southampton County, VA married Sarah"Sally"Harrison b 1821 VA dau of Catherine C. Harrison b 1800 VA. By the time of the 1850 census Catherine Harrison was apparently a widow. In the 1840 census for Southampton Co, VA there is a James James residence that contained numerous males of various ages but only two females: one a small child and the other one a person the right age grouping to have been Sarah. This is the only time I have found with James James and his wife Sarah Harrison being together. The 1850 census for Southampton County shows Sarah Harrison James living in the household of her mother Catherine Harrison along with three of her children and Sarah's Harrison siblings. James James and the fourth son(my GGF)James Edwin James are nowhere to be seen. The children of Sarah Harrison James in that 1850 census are:Nathaniel, Allen B.(actually his name was "Benjamin Allen" called "Allen"), & Joshua Cummins all born between 1840 & 1846. The first two b in VA and Joshua b in NC. The Harrison siblings of Sarah in the household were:Allen J., Hannah A., Andrew J., Elizabeth H., Benson F., all born between 1823 & 1836 all in VA. My GGGF James James disappeared ca1850. Maybe he was killed in the Mexican War? Maybe he went to the Gold Fields in California? Where is his will? Why did he and that one son (my GGF)James Edwin not live with the rest of the family? Did they have business interests in other places? Family stories have it that after the Civil War my GGF James Edwin James came home to Southampton County, VA and lived with his brother Allen and Allen's wife Patty Turner. However, the story goes that James Edwin and Miss Patty did not get along, so he left. No one knows when he left or where he was headed. However, after a time he appeared in Johnson County in southern IL. He worked as a farm hand and ca1875 he married Eliza Drucilla Marberry. He died there in 1885 when my grandfather Robert Franklin James was four years old. Nobody knows why James went to southern IL, exactly when he arrived or where he was between when he left VA and when he arrived in Johnson Co,IL. It's possible he had another wife somewhere between those two geographical locations. My GGM James spoke of his speech mannerisms and his courtly manners. She said he told her the Jameses owned an oyster bed. Maybe this is why he and his father were gone all the time. Is there anyone out there who can solve this mystery for me? Boice Burns Houston, TX

    3. Roll call.... Good idea! I'm stuck on a George and Elizabeth James that came to Union County Illinois in approx. 1810. I have everything after that date but am lost as to where they came from, birth dates and marriage date. I have written documentation they came through Kentucky on their way to Union County. A couple of their children show being born in KY. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for a great list-service! 2. Christine West
    3. Just found this, hope it helps someone: from Weston A. Goodspeed's County of Brown, Indiana - Historical and Biographical, 1884 with Charles Blanchard, editor: Biographical Sketches of Hamblen Township: DAVID JAMES, dealer in general merchandise, at Spearsville, is a native of Noble County, Ohio, was born February 8, 1849, and is the third of the six in family born to Theodore and Clarissa (Merry) James, natives of Ohio, and of German extraction. David James attended school and was reared in Ohio. August 17, 1867, he married Miss Hannah, daughter of Abram M. and Helen (Hart) Bryan, and to this happy pair were bestowed seven children, five of whom are living-Orpha A., Olive B., Gracie M.B., Orvel S. and Reed C. In 1871, Mr. James emigrated to this township, purchased land near Georgetown, farmed four years, then sold, rented land for one year, and engaged in produce-dealing for three years, after which experiment he moved to Spearsville in 1879, and engaged most successfully in his present line. Mr. James has been a useful and diligent citizen, having contributed more, perhaps, to the growth and prosperity of the town than any one other person. He is a Democrat by party preference, a prominent citizen, and he, his wife and two daughters are members of the church, of which our subject is an assistant Class Leader.

    1. [JAMES-L] David JAMES, 1870 Census, PA
    2. Max A. James
    3. The 1870 Census for Findley Twp., Mercer County, PA, lists David JAMES, age 23, living in the household of Isaac & Anna FARRED and their four minor children. I assume he was a hired hand because there was also a Henry GOODAT, age 28, living there. Does anyone recognize the name David JAMES? Who and where is his family? The Census also lists a boarding school named S. O. School (Orphanage?). Two of the many children listed are Amelia JAMES, age 9, and Frank G. JAMES, age 6. There is no indication they are connected to the above David JAMES. Again, does anyone recognize these children and can you connect them to a JAMES family? My grandparents, A. P. JAMES and Emma Isabelle RILEY JAMES lived in Greenville, Mercer Co., PA, prior to coming to Nebraska in 1884. Could these above listed JAMES's be associated with that JAMES family? I will appreciate any information any of you may have. Max James ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
