Hi Troops and particularly Peter, I assume that he would have been a Jacobite. My list of Jacobites of the '15 includes Sir Patrick Maxwell of Springkell, who I assume would have been William's father. Maybe another member can confirm whether he was a brother or cousin of William Maxwell, Earl of Nithsdale who escaped in 1716 and died in Rome in 1744.
