The tv series, based on the best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon, follows the adventures of Claire Randall, a nurse transported back in time to the late 18th century, shortly before the Jacobite rising of 1745. There she falls in love with a handsome young highlander named Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan. The Jacobites wanted to restore the Catholic succession to the throne of Great Britain that had been cut short by the flight of King James VII of Scotland and II of England into exile, and the ascension of the Protestant William of Orange to the throne. They fought in a series of rebellions until the failure of the '45, which put an end to any serious challenge to the authority of the Hanoverian government. Sam himself grew up in the converted stables of Kenmure Castle, in South-West Scotland, which has strong Jacobite links of its own. Kenmure was of old the seat of the Gordons of Lochinvar, and William Gordon, 6th Viscount Kenmure, declared for the Jacobites in the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. Unfortunately, despite being celebrated in later Jacobite ballads as "the bravest lord that ever Galloway saw", he was captured at Preston and sentenced to death, the grim deed being done on 24th February 1716 on Tower Hill in London, his titles and lands being forfeited. These days the castle lies shattered and ruined, and the ancient title of Viscount Kenmure lies dormant, awaiting its rightful heir…"

    1. [JACOBITES] Lord William Boyd, 4th Earl of Kilmarnock, Culloden et al...........................
    2. Gareth Arscott
    3. Hi All My Ancestor (above), was captured at Culloden, tried and executed. One of his sons Charles, fled after the battle and went to France via the Isle of Arran. What I am trying to find out, is when he returned. There was a newspaper report that suggested he had returned to England in 1755 with 3 gentlemen and gone to Scotland. They had been forced to leave France because they had refused to take up arms against England. Although this was widely reported, he was married the following year in France and his son was born one year later, in France. He is said to have been resident in Ludquharn, Aberdeenshire in 1770, so I suspect that he came back with his French wife between 1757-1770. There were several Acts of Indemnity that may have pardoned him but I can find no information online to help me confirm whether this is the case. I do not believe he entered the British Armed Forces, although his son did, seeing action in the US War of Independence and later in the West Indies. I would appreciate any insight into this matter. Yours Gareth

I came down to Philippines for a program before before everything went wrong, which left me with almost nothing! My wallet and other valuables were stolen off last night by unknown thugs, leaving my passport and life safe. My luggage is still in custody of the hotel management pending when I make payment on outstanding bills I owe. I contacted my bank (E-mail) for a wire transfer but it has proven almost Impossible to operate my account from here as they made me understand international transactions take 7 working days to be effective I have also been to the police and embassy here, but they are not helping issues, which i can't wait. I need you to help me with a loan to pay my hotel bills and get my self home. I will appreciate so much and definitely refund your money as soon as I am home. Let me know if you can be of help. 3. Thank you Kathleen for the download of the book pertaining to rebels. I will gradually read all of this as it is so interesting. I agree that MAXWELLs were predominately protestant. I just cannot seem to find the link between those arriving at co down and the families left behind in Dumfries. thank you Meryle

    2. Meryle, "a list of persons named as being concerned in the Rebellion" You've probably already done this, but go to the link below, all the way to the end of the book. There are some Maxwells listed in the index. http://ia600408.us.archive.org/3/items/listofpersonscon00scot/listofpersonscon00scot.pdf I've researched Maxwells in Ireland, but I'm sure they were Protestants. Good luck, Kathleen On Feb 19, 2013, at 3:48 PM, Meryle Maxwell wrote: > Hi I am new to this post and am rather in awe of the knowledge that others on this post display.
