Marriage record shows his name as "Markus". The family story is that one of the earlier, very young, Jackson boys served with Lafayette and was "overcome with the fumes of alcohol"while on canteen duty. When he saw the boy's young age, Lafayette took him under his wing and due to that kindness, the Jackson boy vowed that the first-born son of each generation would be named for Lafayette. Apparently this tradition continued until my grandfather, Isaac Lafayette Gamewell, decided he would not saddle his son with that name. Marquis and Martha Jackson had a daughter, Martha, who married Francis Asbury (Frank) Gamewell. My 90-year-old aunt who has been researching for years, has not been able to go further back with this Jackson line. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
