William was a Baptist (and did some lay ministry). He is said to have donated land for a Baptist church in Culpeper. Here is the first census in which she appears (I can't find this William in 1860; in 1850 and prior, he's living with his parents). 1870 Federal Census - Virginia Roll 1641 Book 1, Page 643a. Culpeper County, Second District, Culpeper Court House Enumerated 19 July 1870. Lines 22-25: Dwelling 272, Family 266; Bowen, William, 35, M, W, Farming, Val. R. E. = 566, Val. pers. prop. = 260, b. Bowen, age 50 (which is more correct!) is alone in the Salem Dist. of Culpeper, a Farmer. VA. ===== No 1890 available for this region. ===== 1900 gets interesting. Here is Jane in the household of William Bowen, with children listed; however, the census indicates she had no children and is a widow !? 1900 Federal Census - Virginia Culpeper County, Supr. Bowen's will, then subsequent codocil: Know all Men by these Presents, That I, W. T. Bowen of the County of Culpeper, State of Virginia, considering the uncertainty of this Life, and being of sound mind and memory do make declare and publish this my last Will & Testament. 1st I order & direct that all my just debts be paid, as soon as possible. 2nd I give & bequeath to my Brother, George W. Bowen, to the heirs of my Brother Joseph H. Bowen & the heirs of my Sister, Harriet F. Newlon, & the heirs of my Sister, Margaret A. Hawkins, The Farm Lying in the Co. of Culpeper, state of Va. near Oma & same as the Gibson Farm, containing about 165 Acres. equally (end of copied page here and appears to be missing a line to top of next page)....in judgment he may decree best. 3rd I give & bequeath unto Jane Jackson the Tract of Land Lying in the Co. of Culpeper, State of Va., & adjoining the Lands of J. E. Lewis, the Adams Farm, & others, & known as the Smith Farm, containing about 82 Acres, to have and to hold the same, to her and her heirs forever. 4th I direct my Executor to pay whoever may nurse & care for me, in my Last sickness, whatever amount in his Judgment, may be a fair compensation for same. 5th I have in the possession of W. T. Vaughan, Ten (10) head of Cattle, in the possession of J. W. Brown, Four (4) head of Cattle, & on the Adams Farm, Five (5) head of Cattle. I direct my Executor to sell the Five (5) head of cattle on the Adams Farm, whenever in his Judgment he may deem best. The Cattle in possession of the said Vaughan & Brown, I direct that my contract with them be carried out, but I want nothing done, that will in any way injure their Interest in said Cattle. 6th All the Residue of my Estate, whenever found, after paying all my just debts as aforesaid, I give and devise unto the same parties named in the second clause of this Instrument, viz., My Brother George W. Bowen, the heirs of my Brother Joseph H. Bowen, The heirs of my Sister Harriet F. Newlon & the heirs of my Sister Margaret A. Hawkins. 7th I do hereby nominate and appoint John E. Lewis, to be Executor of this my Last Will & Testament. In witness whereof, I, the above named Testator, have hereunto set my hand & seal this the 3rd day of Feb. 1902. W. T. Terrill J. W. Brown Codicil Whereas, I W. T. Bowen, of the County of Culpeper, State of Va., have made my Last will & Testament in writing, bearing date of Feb. 3rd 1902, in & by which I have given & bequeathed to one Jane Jackson, the tract of Land, described in clause 3rd of my will & known as the Smith Land. Now therefore (thencefore?) I do by this writing, which I declare to be a Codicil to my Last Will & Testament to be taken as a part thereof, order & declare that my will is that the said tract of Land be bequeathed to Jane Jackson for Life only, & at her death to go to the heirs as named in the 2nd clause of my will. It is my desire that this Codicil be annexed to & made a part of my Last Will & Testament, as aforesaid to all interests & purposes. In witness whereof, I the above named Testator have hereunto set my hand & seal this 22nd day of April 1902. W. T. Bowen (seal) Signed, sealed & declared by the said W. T. Bowen, to be a Codicil to his Last Will & Testament, in the presence of us, who at his request & in his presence & in the presence of each other, have subscribed our names as witnesses hereto. W. E. Terrill J. W. Brown Virginia In the Culpeper County Court, October 20th 1902. The last Will and Testament of W. T. Bowen deceased was produced to the Court and duly proved by the oaths of W. E. Terrill and J. W. Brown, its two subscribing witnesses thereto, and the codicil annexed to said will was also duly proved by the oaths of said W. E. Terrill and J. W. Brown, subscribing witnesses thereto, and therefore the said will together with the codicil were admitted to probate and ordered to be recorded. And on motion of John E. Lewis, the Executor named in said will he is permitted to qualify as such, thencefrom? he entered unto and acknowledged a bond in the penalty? of $300.00 with W. Wallis Lewis as surety, who justified as to his ___?___, and qualified as such executor by taking the oaths prescribed by law. Teste, W. E.
