Maybe this angle would be easier. If you find someone that could be his parents age then you could look for them in the 1880 census. Although there is a chance that they were left out of the 1880 census. They may have been moving around. When and where did he died? Have you looked for his will? How about real estate records for him or other Jacksons' living in the same area? I found a mother for one of g,g,g,grandparents in the real estate records. It happened to be her property, but it gave her sons name. Are you where you can actually go to the courthouse to research these records? I try to never leave a stone unturned and I always do better when I can go to the source.
