He was sent to an orphanage on the North Side of Pittsburgh. He had a brother named William Jackson who was older. For some reason William was not put into the orphanage. Ira lost touch with his family. One day William came to see Ira in Sewickley Hills (a subburb of Pittsburgh). William and Ira did speak but his daughters (small then)said nothing seemed to come of it. We went to the orphanage to find records but they said the records were lost in a fire.

John's mother is reported to have been Nancy Davis, dau. of William Davis of Spotsylvania Co., VA who settled in Owen Co., KY. The info I have collected so far is all from the Davis side of things. The Nancy Davis mentioned above is said to have had these siblings: Mollie, Delilah, Elizabeth and James -- all born in VA (probably), but grew up in Owen Co., KY. The children of Nancy and ___ Jackson were born in the late 1790s and early 1800s in KY, but appear to have moved into Indiana in the 1840s or 1850s.

The 1880 census lists her as Clarinda. I have a picture of her mother and on the back it lists her as the mother of Clarinda J. Her parents were Hanibal and Hannah Mitten Jackson. In 1880 they lived in Tippecanoe Co., IN. Hannah was not listed on the census report so am thinking she died before then. The picture states she died very young of TB. As far as I know she was their only child. I haven't been able to find anything on them after that census. Hannah and my great grandfather were brother and sister. He went to Iowa with his mother in abt. 1841. We dont know who she was , but are suspecting that James was illegitamate and that her maiden name may have been Jackson. We have found a census in Iowa with one of James children after he died living with a lady that was not supposed to be related and the census states that his daughter is the ladys grniece and the womans name is Lucy ann Hopper Smith. These Hoppers were in Parke County Indiana at the time of James birth. James married a Julianna Elder in the 1850' in Green Island Iowa. and had several children. The only name I have for him is "Elder" Jackson. He was born in Maryland but I don't know what year. I don't know if "Elder" is a name or a title. He lived in Elizabethtown, Kentucky in 1806. In 1815 he moved to Spencer, County Indiana. He was married four times and had over fifty children. He died in 1846 in Cass, County Illinois.
