Author: TNResearcher Surnames: Jackson, Maxwell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.jackson/12941.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks so much, Gwen! I've found out a bit more information about my great grandfather that hopefully will help me find more out about his line. His name was actually John W. Jackson and he went by "Johnny." He married Edna Maxwell in Obion County, TN in 1887. I've found their marriage license and listed as a witness for the marriage is WA Jackson. I am assuming that this might be John's father since he was only 16 when he married, but it could be his mother, a sibling or another relative. Can anyone shed any light on this Jackson line with this new info? Thanks in advance! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: wilso127 Surnames: Jackson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.jackson/13018.15.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My first JACKSON American ancestor was a Quaker from Ballitore, County Wicklow, Ireland, named Isaac (1665-1750) who came to Londongrove Township in Chester County PA with his large family in 1725. His ancestry comes down from Yorkshire and Lancashire via Scotland and North Ireland to Counties Cavan and Meath, prior to County Wicklow. He was a direct descendant of (Sir) Richard Jackson (1570-1610) of Eske, Yorkshire, who fought at the Battle of Flodden Field and was knighted posthumously by King James VI/I in 1613. His wife was Ursula Hildyard of Yorkshire, a direct descendant of William the Conqueror through King Edward I's daughter, Joan of Acre. Through various intermarriages, etc., this ancestry can then be reasonably reliably traced back to include Dark Ages and Medieval chieftains and 'kings' of Saxony, Sweden, Denmark, Scotland, Wessex, England, Normandy, the Plantagenets, Gaul, the Franks, the Merovingians and Carolingians, Spain, the Picts and Scots, and includes su! ch personalities as Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne, King Alfred the Great of Wessex (England) and Saint Ferdinand (San Fernando) of Spain and St. Louis of France. Prior to about 800 and back to 200 AD, the ancestry is a bit suspect re: authenticity. My present quest is to find the Yorkshire ancestry of Sir Richard Jackson's grandfather, also named Richard (1505?-1555), who married an Ann Todd in 1538 in Yorkshire. Jackson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.jackson/9167.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John F. Jackson is alledgedly my ancestor, although there is no actual proof. However, the evidence is extremely convincing. The info I have comes from the divorce cases between John F. Jackson and his wife, nee Grigsby, in Fauquier Co., VA. Jackson had an affair and children with a young widow, Elizabeth Putnam and they had children, one of which I am descended from. They used the Putnam name, but Jackson was their father. You are ahead of me in research. I have copied all the wills and inventories you posted. Now I know more about Jackson's background. You are very thorough (my kind of research). The divorce cases are on the VA Library website. (The divorce was never granted, by the way,but John and wife were seperated from the 1840s on.) I will send you info if you are interested, but I'm sure you have more on the Jackson's than I do. Please send me what you have. I would be very appreciative. (I only found out about this two years ago, after 30 years of rese! arch. I erroneously took the Putnam's back to the 1600s, but all for naught.) 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ccountr1 Surnames: Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.jackson/13079/mb.ashx Message Board Post: CHRISTOPHER GUNNESS JACKSON Walsh Heritage, ND USA 1881-1981 p. 176-177 Vol 1 Christopher G. JACKSON was born Aug 21, 1849 in Perth, Ontario, Canada. Mary BARR was born Dec 1, 1856 in Renfrew, Ontario, Canada where she spent her girlhood. The stome house where she was born is still standing. Christopher G. Jackson and Mary Barr were married in Renfrew Dec 10, 1872, where they made their home until 1880. Mr Jackson came to Grand Forks in 1880; Mrs Jackson joined him later in the fall of 1881 at Grafton, bought land and built a house. Mrs Jackson came to Grafton with her household property in April 1882. She waited at the Grand Forks depot fra Friday morning until Saturday evening for the train to take her to Grafton. She boarded the train at 6 o'clock, but on account of the high water, the train traveled very slowly and did not reach Grafton until the next morning at 4 o'clock. Grafton was merely a collection of shanties. They attended their first church service in a log cabin, also used for a school. Mr Jackson built a blacksmith shop in 1882, across fra the Merchants Hotel on the corner of Griggs Avenue and Sixth Street. He operated it continuously for over 50 years. The Blacksmith Shop was one of the oldest business institutions in Grafton under the same ownership. A diploma was awarded to C.G. Jackson at the First Annual Fair of Walsh County Industrial Society held at Grafton, Territory of Dakota, Sept 25 and 26, 1885 for the "First Premium for the Best Farm Roller, Division I." Later he also made a large number of horseshoes and siplayed them in a large case at the Grand Forks Fair. The blacksmith property was sold to the North Western telephone Company, who built a commercial office and a plant building. Mrs Jackson was a charter member of Mizpah Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, a charter member of the Presbyterian Church in Grafton, a member of the Mite Society, a charter member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and a member of the Federated Church Ladies Aid. Christopher G. Jackson received his Master mason degree in Crescent Lodge during the territorial days. He was one of the charter members of Mizpah Chapter O.E.S. He was a meber of the first fire department organized in the early days of Grafton. Also a charter member of Odd Fellows Lodge 44, in 1892. Mr and Mrs Jackson had always stood for the better things in the community, and in so small way in money and labor, worked to give to the community a moral atmosphere that was good and wholesome. Mr and Mrs Jackson observed their Gold Wedding Anniversary Dec 10, 1922 with 56 relatives and friends at their home on Griggs Avenue. They also observed their 60th Anniversary in a quiet manner with a family dinner at their home. Mrs Jackson made an airplane trip fra Fargo in 1946 when she was 90 years old, with her daughter, Mrs R. K. GRANTIER, to spend the winter in Salt Lake City with the Grantiers. There were eleven children born to this union: Alexander Jackson Agnes Isabel Jackson Bruce Barr Jackson Mary Myrtle Jackson Myrtle Jean Jackson Clyde Emerson Jackson Mary Jackson Ralph Wallace Jackson Allan Jackson Ruby Venona Jackson Christopher Herbert Jackson There are 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. First Sgt Ralph Wallace Jackson entered the service April 15, 1907. At the Mexican border he served in 1916-1917. He served at Camps Greene, Mills, Merritt, then left the US on the Leviathan Dec 14, 1917. He stayed with Company C during the entire war period and was discharged March 11, 1919. He was a member of Company C for 16 years. Seaman Christopher Herbert Jackson entered service Feb 13, 1918, serving at Great Lakes Training Station. He took a course with Seaman Gunner Class at the Navy Yards, Washington, DC. The signing of the Armistice prevented him from finishing school. He was discharged Jan 25, 1919. Two of the children are still living - Mrs Casper (Ruby) Dahl or Ohio and Christopher H. Jackson of Wisconsin. C.G. Jackson died in 1936 and Mrs Mary Barr Jackson died in 1948. They are both buried in Masonic Crescent Cemetery in Grafton. ---page 176-177 Walsh Heritage, ND USA 1881-1981 Vol 1 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
