My research is not necessary on his decendents but rather his family in Clarksburg WV very near the Greater Pittsburgh area. I have been to the Stonewall Jackson Museum in Winchester VA many times. It seems that General Jackson had only one daughter that survived. So being a direct descendent by the Jackson line is unlikely. It would have to be through the Estridge line. One person who is somewhat related is actress Mary Tyler Moore. A rather large photograph of her is hanging on the wall of the Stonewall Jackson Museum in Winchester. You have to understand the relationship between the Patton family of CSA General George Patton from Clarksburg, President John Tyler and the Jackson family of CSA Col Thomas Stonewall Jackson to understand why her picture is hanging on the wall. It also helps that the Museum was called the Moore house and Mary Tyler Moore's family was from Winchester/Berryville VA area Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was wondering if anyone else was studying all the in-law families of President Jackson and Vice-President Van Buren. Families like Crawford, McIntyre, Myers, Grundy, Butler, Hutchinson, Robertson, Hays, Fawcett, Coffee, Hoes, Bailey, Singleton, Mitchell, Dickinson and Burr. Example: Andrew Jackson's mother was Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson. Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson stayed with the Crawford family in NC when Andrew Jackson was a boy. Andrew Jackson killed Charles Dickinson in a dual. Felix Grundy was Martin Van Burens attorney. Hanna Hoes was Martin Van Burens wife. Abraham Van Buren was their son who married Ann Singleton and so on. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: PhilipAsh56 Surnames: Jackson, Ashby, Shumate, Ash Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.jackson/13189/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm looking for a connection between Jackson, Ashby, and Shumate families early to late 1800's in Kentucky. In the book "History of the Shumate family, Kentucky Pioneers" by Robert S Riley, on pages H-45 and H-46 is an extract of Kentucky court records, for HOPKINS COUNTY COURT, MADISONVILLE, KENTUCKY, will book 1, pages 153 - 154. The first part of the will reads : As guardian for Nimrod, James, Ann, George and Thomas Shoemate(Shumate) orphans of Benjamine Shoemate, dec'd, I have received from the Adm'or of said Decent the following estate of my said wards. I won't write the body of this will here , but it is signed by GEORGE ASHBY. At the end of this extract the writer has added a comment. Part of this comment reads : George Ashby , Snr., served as the Guardian of the above named children untill he died in 1817. In his will dated april 1817 on file in the Hopkins county court, he identified as his daughter DELILAH (ASHBY) SHEWMATE (Shumate) and the 5 grandchildren named above. Following his death ALEXANDER ASHBY served as their Guardian for a while, and he was followed by BECKLEY JACKSON. The relationship of BECKLEY JACKSON is unknown; he may have been another son-in-law of GEORGE ASHBY. (end of part of writers comment) Is the BECKLEY JACKSON mentioned here the Beckley Jackson born 1788 Mecklenburg, Virginia , died 1859 Hopkins Ky.? Does anyone know of his relationship to the Ashby or Shumate families? In the 1860 US census for Dist 2, Nelson Ky, page 92,dwelling house number 663 is Matilda Ashe 53, born Ky (She was a Shumate. She married Robert Ash or Ashby. He may have been a cousin. Her mother may have been Delilah Ashby) and Nimrod Shumate 91 born Va (Matilda's Uncle?) In dwelling no.664 is Henrietta Jackson 59 born Va, and Mary Jackson 53 born Ky. In dwelling no. 666 is Thomas Jackson 63, born Va Raymond Jackson 29, born Ky, and Ellen Jackson 16, born Ky. There is another family of Jacksons on page 93. In the 1880 US census for Nelson Kentucky, page 29, dwelling no. 255 is Matilda Ash (Shumate)74 Widowed, and R Jackson, male 49, single, blacksmith. (Matilda,s son George Washington Ash was a Blacksmith) Any help in finding a connection between the Jacksons, Shumates (Shoemate, Shoemake etc), Ashbys and possibly Ash, or any comments will be greatly appreciated.
