    2. Hi Gayle, your records need a little tweaking. The spelling is Stuart - but the mistake came from some mis-information (is that a word?) given many years ago by Trist herself. We don't know the reason for the information she gave, but it has now been proven incorrect. Trist was born two months before Lacy Stewart was killed at Chancellorsville. He was a 1st Lieutenant - CSA. Next, her brother's name was John Billups Stewart (not James). They were both the children of Lacy Stewart (s/o John Stewart and Catherine Whisenant) and Amanda Jones. There were three other children of Lacy and Amanda - namely William, Mary Catherine and Martin V. I can find nothing (except census records on William and Martiin V.) However, I have been in contact with a descendant of Mary Catherine and also John Billups (great-granddaughters of each). I am a great-granddaughter of Trist - so the family is finally closing in on some information. Trist and John Billups also had a half brother and a half sister from Amanda's second marriage. She married a John "Doc" Hughes from South Carolina and they had two children. When those children were very young, Hughs deserted Amanda and the children and returned to South Carolina. Before Amanda died, she asked that she be buried under the name Stewart (instead of Hughes) and she is buried at Macedonia. I don't remember right now, but I think John Billups and his wife, Ella Taylor, are buried there as well - while John Stewart and Catherine Whisenant are buried on the Stewart property somewhere in or around Habersham. Amanda's name was Amanda Melvina Jones. In the 1880 census her mother, Mary Jones is living with her. Mary Jones states that she is 86 years old, was born in Georgia and that her father was born in Ireland. I have tried and tried and cannot determine the name of Amanda's father. I do know that Amanda and Lacy were married in Rabun County, so it's at least a good bet she is from one of the Rabun Jones' families. I don't know if you connect to the Stewarts or the Jones families - but I have pictures if you are interested. I have a picture of Lacy, Amanda, John Billups, Trist, and Ella Taylor. I know that you are also researching Jones families - so if you have any clues regarding Amanda, I'd sure appreciate any suggestions you might have. Other direct line names connected to Lacy Stewart (ancestors) are Eaker, Carpenter, Kiser (Kaiser), Mullinax, and Visinand (now Whisenant). Fran
