From: Alpha Ruth Andrews Ivester; I, too, would like to know how one proves, their connection to the Creeks and Cherokees as I have been handed, by oral tradition ancestry from the Ayers, Cash. and Andrews connection. I have a pine needle basket woven by my g.grandmother. I have several sheets of Creek. and Cherokee whose last names were Cash or Andrews. Help!
Judy, I don't mind your talking about another surname or two. Been there before myself. Anyway a lot of us like to keep all information that comes through so we have it if we get questions outside of this mail-list on the names, places, etc. So it may benefit someone else down the road. Regina
Emma, thanks for thinking of me. The info you have, I found quite a few years ago. I can qualify most of it. Yes, all of the mentioned references apply. At present am working on Caldonia! What a name to remember, huh. Am trying to find more on Thomas, tho. Found the marriage of Caldonia Arrendale to Thomas Gables- took place Feb. 21, 1875, married by Jeptha Woods. I have a bit of a genealogy on the Arrendale family, shared from an Arrendale researcher. Rabun could also lists other Arrendale marriages-one of them is a mystery.....William Arrendale m. Gables, Zelia on Jan. 13, 1884 by E.T. Galloway. Who the heck is Zelia? In all the years of my Gable research I have never seen this name. You could be correct on this one, it probably was Barbara. I worked late into the morning hours on all this! and I have one other problem area. Think it had to do with two other found records. In another reference found Caldonia Arrendale married to a John Gable. The marriage was not given, but their births were, Her birth given as 1858 and John's as 1858. Weird. Have to check this out. The other problem is that of Sarah Jane Gable. Now my mind is blank! Will re-check and get back to you on this. On your La Count question... yes it was LaCount, not LaCourt. And yes Barbary A. Gables did marry an Arniod. This is probably our clue to that connection. Bet Jacob was visiting some of the Arnolds there in Coweta County. I need to sit down and put all of this in database. Yesterday was so busy that by the time I got to my research, my brain was fried!!! Lastly, I do hope that other members of this wonderful list have not minded our discussions pretaining to all of this. It does apply in a small way to the Ivester family. Hope we are not over stepping the rules on this one. My hope was that our Ivester cousins might have info that would also help. Just le me know if and we could discuss some of this in private if it is not acceptable. regards, Judy

Thomas Gabrels - son of Jacob Gables & Melberry Arrendale. In the 1870 census he is listed in Rabun Co., with his grandmother Sarah Arrendale - age 68 and a Calidonia, age 13. I think Calidonia's last name was Aarendale - not Gables because.... from Rabun Co., Georgia marriages Thomas Gables md Caldonia Arendale on 21 Feb 1875 What do you think - is this Thomas, son of Jacob? Then found this for William Harrison Gables - son of Jacob Gables & Jaley Ann Ivester William H. Gables to J. T. LaCourt on 23 Dec 1883 I think LaCourt should be LaCount - What do you think? And a marriage date for David Matthew McClain - son of Miles McClain and Jaley Ann Ivester D. M. McClain md E. M. Hollifield on 5 May 1881 in Rabun And finally this one that is really interesting. You talked about seeing folks listed as Arrendale and Arnold. Well...... Barbara Arzeley Gables - d/o Jacob Gables & Jaley Ann Ivester supposidly married a William Arnold. But I found this today William Arrendale to Zelia Gables on 13 Jan 1884 in Rabun Co., Ga Betcha this is Barbara Arzeley Gables... what do you think??? Take care - Emma
Emma, backtracking. Looked a the picture of the old marker for J.R. Gable buried in Jackson county, Ga. He did indeed die in 1882, not 1888 as I had typed. Thus the Jackson Herald article referring to "Old Man Gabriel" was indeed this man's death date. Judy
The village of Winterville was originally located in BOTH Clarke and Oglethrope Counties, Georgia. It still remains today as the only other incorporated twon emntirely in Athens-Clarke Co. Judy
I too am a bit confused by the dates. I do not clain to know the answers in this little mystery. I am re-reading the article and am wondering myself. I am just reporting what info I have uncovered. Let me get back to Phillip and have him perhaps, clarify some of this for me. Judy
Emma- I site two sources on this one. Correspondence received to Judy V. Mason on Saturday Feb. 2, 1974 From: Bessie Gabrels Duncan of Clarkesville Georgia. This letter was one of several received from Bess during my earlier days of Gable/Gabrels research. Great Aunt Bess just died recently at a ripe old age. She was the nest to last child of Jasper Newton Gabrels. Sister to my grandfather, Lawrence edward Gabrels. I quote: "Our father (she was referring to Jasper Newton Gabrels) was the only one of the children who lived in Habersham county. He was one of the younger children and some relatives took him in to raise. (this was probably right after his father Jacob disappeared) It seems that their father (meaning Jacob) was a school teacher and brick mason and when school was out he would go to Gainesville, Ga. and lay brick. THEY LAST THEY KNEW OF HIM AS FAR BACK AS THEY COULD TRACT IT, HE HAD FINISHED A JOB, WAS PAID AND STARTED HOME TO WINTERVILLE, gA. bUT NEVER REACHED HOME.They never knew whether someone robbed and killed him or shat happened. There were a number of children I think (five perhaps) and in those days there was no way for a woman to support a family, so the younger children lived with relatives and Papa, I suppose. Never remember his father and as we came along we just accepted the fact that Grandpa (Jacob) was dead. No questions asked. MOST OF THE WINTERVILLE FOLKS SPELLED THEIR NAME GABRIEL AND SOME GABRELS. I am sorry again about not writing sooner but I fell in May and broke my right wrist and twisted my right knee and wasn't able to sue my hand much. It still give me great trouble but I can write a bit. I' be 17 this month. We've missed seeing your grandmother Elsie since she was unable to make the trip this summer. Love, Great Aunt Bess." March 6, 1974, Clarkesville, Georgia to Judy V. Mason, from Bess Gabrels Duncan: "Dear Judy, well a bit more information. When I called cousin Cora Cross in winterville, again, she had remfembered Grandpa's name was Jake-I imagine for JACOB. She could not recall Grandma's name except "JALIE." There wer three boys Uncle Paddy, Patrick I guess. We always said Paddy, and papa Jasper Newton. Think there were two girls named MAGGIE AND LIZZIE, BOTH MARRIED IVESTERS. Grandma (meaning Jaley Ann ) married once to a McClain." Second source: July 2002-Correspondence from Chuch Rogers who resides in Atlanta, Georgia to Judy V. Mason. "Thomas L. Ivester was my grandfather and I attended THE FUNERAL OF ELIZABETH. I have photos of the attendess and other Ivester family members." This letter the result of my search to procure more info on daughters of Jacob. This info pertained to Margaret Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gabriel Ivester who married Thomas "Tom" L. Ivester. Thomas and Elizabeth Ivester are both buried in Winterville city Cemetery. Her dates on marker 1878-1966. His dates 1876-1952. I personally had someone do a look-up in those cemetery records for me, to confirm. Chuch Rogers is son of Leo and Ophelia Ivester Rogers. (email address: crog5@yahoo.com) His records also idenify these lat two children of Jacob Gable! ~~~~~~~~~~~Coweta County, Ga.~~~~~~ Located by chance some family group sheets from Ga. More Gable names.... Joseph Robert Gable and wife Sara Elizabeth Carmichael had daughter named ELIZZIE IDA GABLE b. 12-2-1869 in same county. She married George rufus Robertson of same county. this couple died in Pompan Beach, Fla. in Pompano Beach Cemetery. Most of this is about the Roberton Family. I have no idea whom they were! Later, I am falling asleep fast! Judy

Sorry Judy, I did not explain that very well. I am confused between the two dates: The 1882 date from the newspaper and the 1888 date from the tombstone or are we talking two Jacob's here. Emma, I may have made a faux paux, here. Jacob taught school in Winterville and probably when school was out he worked in Gainesville. Seems to me I have hear two stories on this one. One that he was also a brick layer, another that he was a peddler. Efither say he seemed to have traveled around this area a bit. Wish I had a real good map (detailed) of that area. Now as for Jacob in Coweta county- I cannot explain this, other than I know the Arnold family had some connection with the Gable family. I am wondering if Jacob was there visiting, or perhaps he may have taught school there and stayed with friends or relatives. Judy
Emma, what are you saying? Phillip Gable sent me a picture of the Jackson County Headstone for Jacob. It states June of 1888. Judy

And.. do you think the Jacob Gables in Coweta Co. in 1870 is the same Jacob of Rabun co - husband of Jaley Ann? As for the counties: Rabun is just north of Habersham - right on the NC/SC borders in the corner. Jackson Co is a couple of counties almost straight south of Habersham. Clarke Co. is just south of Jackson Co. These two butt up against each other. Clarke is between Jackson and Oglethorpe counties. Take care - Emma

I found my comparison chart on the two Jacob B. Gables. Jackson County, Ga. Marriage records: Jacob R. Gable married to Emily M. Duncan on Jan, 6, 1876 Note that this marriage took place between the births of the other Jacob R. Gables (Habersham Co.) last two children: Margaret A. born abt 1874 Martha Elizabeth (Lizzie) born 1880 Notice that these two children were born some 6 years apart. Jacob of Habersham was present in the 1870 census at about 46 years years old with Jaley Ann and children. Jacob of Habersham was not present in the 1880 census of this county. Thus his "disappearance" happened sometime between 1870 and 1880. During this 10 year time period the child Martha Elizabeth was concieved. My calculations from the census records ondicated that she was born a wee bit earlier. But this birth is recorded as 1800 on her headstone. We need to obtain a more accurate date of Jacob's disappearance. Thus my check of the school records, which I have not found. Now on to Jackson county, again. My Gable contact there with the other Jacob R. Gable states that he wa listed in that County in 1880 census. But there is no record of him owning any land! Nor did the folks there know much about this man. That same census states that his parent were born in S.C. The Gable descendants there state that Jacob has always been a mystery, Nothing is known of him prior to 1875! So Jacob and Emily Duncan must have met about that time and married the next years in 1876. This Jacob had a son born 3-16-187. This child was buried in Jackson County as Starling Price Gable. died 1955 Second child was "Mina" Matilda gable b. 8-24-1877 d. 1934 It appears that this first child was born BEFORE THEIR MARRIAGE DATE. My Gable contact descends from these children. They state that their Jacob was in his late 40's when this family was started. (Jacob of Habersham was about 43-46 years old in the Habersham 1870 census!) thus he would have been about 52 in 1880, if he had not disappeared!) According to the Jackson Herald dated Friday June 9, 1882: "The old man Gabriel, a principle witness in case court against Sanford Prickle, charged with murder of young Straynge, died rather suddenly last week." It is rumored up in the settlement where he lived, that he was poisned, but we presume that it is hardly so, merely a suspecion. This Jackson county Jacob died June of 1888 in Jackson County, Ga. He is buried Zion Bapt. Church, Braselton, Georgia His wife Emily M. Duncan died 1904 and is also buried there. (a photgraph was provided to me!) I have a genealogy of the this group. By the way this Jacob's daughter "Mina" Matilda married Alfred Perkins Cleveland. (another familiar surname over in Habersham area. Note the name of Jacob's wife DUNCAN. Over in Habersham the Gable/Gabrels family married into a Duncan line there in Clarkesville.) Also remember that Jacob and our Jaley Ann resided in Winterville, Ga. Clarke County. Jacob taught school in Gainesville or worked there when he wasn't teaching in Winterville. Was not Clarke county very close to Jackson county? Any comments welcomed! Judy V. Mason
Check out Jacob's last daughter Margaret A. and her birth date. Jacob would have had to have been with Jaley Ann in 1873 in order to consieve this last daughter. I believe that the other Jacob appeared in Jackson County before that date!!! I have as ,Phillip Gable, the dates and occurrances of both of these "Jacobs" . Let me pull up the file and review it again-for safetys sake. For some reason I think we found a flaw or question about all of this and why we have not come to a possible decision on this possibility. I shall take another look at it all. I guess I also tried to locate some old school records from Gainesville, where Jacob taught school, trying to estimate when the last date that he taught might have been. Looking for some real documentation before jumping to any conclusions! Will get back to ya on this one, Emma. I also don't want to upset the Gable family until I am certain. Or perhaps they knew something, but told this story to protect the children. It does amaze me as to the similiarities. Also find it funny that a man would just disappear into thin air without a trace. But either way is possible. You other info agrees with mine except for a few things. Someone reported to me that Thomas Arrendale married a Miss Leferve. ???? Yes, Melberry and Joel were siblings. I still am not certain as to the John Gable who mentioned as being a grandson and his idenity. And the name Caldonia has been bugging me for quite a while!! I will chedk out our Gable Web site and see if there is anthing there about them. but have never heard much about this Caldonia. with a name like that I am certain that most would remember it. Joseph, and Warren we have little info on, also. I am more active on the Ivester list than I am on the Gable list. Don't think there is very much action, there. Judy

Now.... what have I missed.... what is wrong.... what needs to be added.... Thanks and take care - Emma
Ok Judy, Here is what I have so far on these folks. Jacob R. Gables - b. abt 1826 in SC - son of John Gables & Mary Betterton md. 1st to Melberry Arrendale (1830-1858) - daug. of Thomas Arrendale & Sarah children: 1. Thomas - b. abt 1847. Found him in the 1870 census of Rabun Co., Ga living with Sarah Arendale, age 68 and Calidonia Gables, age 13. Thomas is listed as age 21. Now... in the 1880 census of Rabun Co., Ga Sarah is listed as age 80 and living with her is John Gables, age 30, grandson, listed as married. Also listed is Calladona gables, age 22 listed as married and two younger children James H., age 4 and Sarah H., age1. John, Calladona, James H. and Sarah H are all listed as grandchildren. However, is this really the same people as listed in the 1870 census and are John and Callidona married to each other and are the younger children really their children????? 2. Sarah - b. abt 1848 - You indicated that she married a Thomas Arrendale. I have not found them in census records yet. 3. Joseph - b. abt 1849. 4. Warren - b. abt 1851 - I found a G. W. Gable that is the right age listed in the 1880 census index for Atlanta, Fulton Co., Ga. Do you suppose this is Warren? 5. George Hiram - b. abt 1853 - I think he married an Elizabeth and had these children: Mary, James J., Joseph L., & George. Found Hiram Gabriels and Elizabeth in the 1870 census of Polksville, Hall Co., Ga. At that time they have 1 child Mary, age 1. In the 1880 census of Hall Co., Ga they are shown with 4 children. 6. Elizabeth - b. abt 1855 - In 1870 she is listed with Jacob Gables and Jaley Ann Ivester in the Rabun Co., Ga. census 7. Nancy - b. abt 1857 - In 1870 she is listed with Jacob Gables and Jaley Ann Ivester in the Rabun Co., Ga. census. In 1880 she is age 20 and in the census as living with Joel Arrendale, age 55 and his wife Margarette in Rabun Co., Ga. She is listed as niece. Now for Jaley Ann - b. 11 July 1837 and d. bef. 1912 - daughter of George Ivester & Anna Rucker md. 1st to Miles McClain (27 June 1832 - 10 Oct 1862) - son of David N. McClain & mary Elizabeth King. children: 1. George Littleton - b. 11 Nov 1855 Ga - d. 21 Feb 1934 Tarrant Co., Tx - md Susan Ellender Carnes (30 Nov 1856 Ga - 1943 Tx) - 7 children - George is listed in the 1860 census with his parents in Rabun Co., Ga - the 1870 census of Rabun with Jacob Gables & Jaley Ann - and the 1880 census of Rabun Co., Ga with his wife and children. 2. Jesse Clingman - b. 16 Sept 1858 Ga - d. 16 Feb 1954 - md Lou Ola Ledford (23 May 1865 - 29 June 1938) - 11 children - Jesse is listed in the 1860 census in Rabun Co., Ga with his parents - the 1870 census of Rabun with Jacob Gables & Jaley Ann. In 1880 he is in the census in two places - first as a son with his mother Jaley Ann and then he is listed with the William L. Arrendale family. 3. David Matthew - b. 24 Apr 1861 - d. 1927 SC - md Ellie Hollifield - 4 children - then md Pearl Waters - 2 children - David is in the 1870 census of Rabun with his mother Jaley Ann. He is also listed with her in the 1880 census of Rabun. Ok.. see next message - take care - Emma
There were seveal census records and other documents that had recorded both of Jacob's wives under strange spellings. In one Melberry was recorded as Melborne. Jaley ann Ivester McClain's name was "slaughtered" many times. Once she recorded as Julia I think. Or some other strange spelling-so don't let that throw ya! This census was also one ot the few records that ever revealed his middle initial, we are not certain that it was even coreect. But the "other Jacob matching him found in Jackson County also used the initial R! Judy
