I imagine he could tell lots of stories of things that happened early on. Thanks also for the information on Robert. I got to meet him one time and he is very nice. I lost track of him when I had to stop genealogy for a while while mother and Shannon were both ill. I do hope he is doing well. Take care - Emma

I have every intention of switching to PAF -- one of these days. I think my computer is at its limit right now - so think I'll wait until I get a new one. In the meantime, I think I finally got it working. I also now know how to fix the name and I also learned how to use foreign languge symbols for those German names. It's been a great day! Thanks again. Fran
Hi Judy - Yes I am talking about FTM. However, I think I've solved the problem. When I was trying to fix a name (a typo that I didn't see until I reviewed the reports) I was blanking out the whole name and typing in the correction - and it (the monster FTM) thought I was trying to delete that person and kept telling me that I had to use the "Delete Individual" feature. Now I'm just blocking out the letters that I want to change and it simply asks me if I'm changing the spelling - I say yes - and it works. Have you ever heard the expression... "There's nothing wrong with the machine... it's the nut behind the wheel?" That's me. Fran
There is a dropdown from your toolbar that allows options to change relationship etc. But I have never in all these years had any difficulty changing the spelling of a name. In some family groups I have totally changed the spelling without any difficulties. Such as: Royal to Ryall/or Ryall to Royal. Judy
I have FTM and have not ever had that problem occur. Are you talking about FTMaker software? Judy
There is an edit function - but if it tells you how to change a name without deleting all other info - I haven't found it. This is Family Tree Maker and they are considered to be a pretty good program. I've been playing around and I think I've found a solution. If I go in and don't blank out the whole name - just highlight the letters I want to change - then it just comes back with "Are you changing the spelling" and allows the change. You know what a dummy I am. I have to fool around with this stuff for hours. The problem for me is that the "Help" topics always seem to address people who already understand what they're doing - that lets me out. Fran

Hi Fran, I am no expert with FTM. I bought the program and used it for a couple of months after which I switched to Personal Ancestral File (PAF) version 5.0. I went into FTM to see what would happen if I tried to change a name and/or the spelling of a name. I highlighted the letters hit backspace which cleared the name and typed in the corrected name. Then I hightlighed just one letter and typed in a different letter which worked also. Everything else was left intact. I am not sure if this is what you were trying to do. The reason I switched to PAF was a difficult problem with FTM which I could not resolve. I like PAF better and it can be downloaded free from Family Search. Emma could probably tell you how to switch over your present records if you are interested. Sorry to be of so little help. Edna Since you were kind enough to answer my last question (you set yourself up) - I have another: Is there a way to correct the spelling of an individual's name without totally deleting that individual? I have some typos that unfortunately occurred in the name and it won't let me change them without deleting. I don't mind if I have to delete a name - but then it deletes everything else that pertains to them and that can cause a lot of re-entering. I'm sure there is a way - but I can't figure it out. Help! Rob McCombs lives in Louisiana His address: 434 Pebblebrook Baton Rouge, LA 70815 Last time I spoke with him, he told me that he was basically putting genealogy on hold until he retires. By the way, I saw Charles Straub Christmas 2000 in Wichita, Kansas where he lives with his daughter and son-in law. He will be 97 years old in December. He is a great guy and told me stories about my great grandparents John and Nora Ivester Fahland. Interesting! (Though I'm not sure I understand it all!) Lee -----Original Message----- From: Edna Cole [mailto:ednaicole@yahoo.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 22, 2002 3:04 PM To: IVESTER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IVESTER] Question re Family Tree Program Hi Fran, Here is what the Family Tree Maker textbook p. 307-8 has to say; "Kinship: Canon & Civil---- Kinship reports list the names, relationships, and relationship degrees of the primary individual's blood relatives and their spouses, as well as the blood relatives of the primary individual's spouse(s)..... The "degree of a relationship is a legal term. It refers to the number of "steps" between two individuals who are blood relatives. The degree in Civil law represents the total number of steps through the bloodline that separate two individuals. For example, there are two steps from you to your grandparent and then two steps back down to your first cousin, so the degree is four. The degree in Canon law measures the maximum number of steps from the nearest common ancestor. Your grandparent is the the nearest common ancestor between you and your first cousin, so in this case the degree would be two. Canon law is used in most of the United States. If two individuals are related in more than one way, Family Tree Maker displays each of the relationships in the Kinship report. For example if two cousins marry, each of the relationships between them would be included." Edna Dazyy5@aol.com wrote:I have the Family Tree Maker program for entering my info but there is something I don't understand. One is "Canon" and it shows a Roman Numeral... the other is "Civil" and it has regular numbers. Does anyone know what these numbers mean? Help!!!!! I don't even think about it!!!! Judy
Thanks, Judy. I'm beginning to understand it - finally. Fran
They are two different ways that one can numerate their genealogy. They provided both so that it is easier for all to pinpoint each relationship, according to whaich of these systems you use. Judy
Thanks so much Edna. I was pretty certain it was something like that - just didn't understand the difference between canon and civil. Once again, you came thru. Fran
