I don't personally think this is the same George Ivester. Peters' son was my g-g-grandfather and his son Charlie had no sisters with these names, according to my grandfather. Tresa M. Hi Everyone, Ancestral File database on the LDS site shows a Lula Nola Ivester b. abt in 1890 in Jack Co., Texas and who married on Oct. 4, 1928 to John Floyd Simpson. John Floys Simpson died Jan. 6, 1959 in Springerville, Apache Co., Arizona. This is the same time period that my Ivester's were in Jack Co., but she does not belong to them. Anyone got any ideas who she is???? Take care - Emma
Thanks, Emma. I don't want you to go thru all that trouble right now. I need to wait until I get a new computer (the memory on mine is as saturated as my own). That will be awhile so, in the meantime, I'll just plug along with FTM. Actually, now that I've learned more about it, it's working quite well. It is much more user-friendly than I am a "friendly user." And certainly faster than my brain works. Thanks for the offer. Fran

I think the CD is $6.00. As for concerns in converting a FTM file to PAF I need some more information. I need to know what version of FTM you have. Then I can find out what you would need to do. I also need to know how extensively you have used the notes fields in FTM as I know that also makes a difference. So.. send my your version number and I will get you some information. Take care - Emma

So far I have had good luck with PAF in that respect but.... the most helpful thing is that there is a PAF mail list. Folks involved in the programming for PAF monitor that mail list and provide help. Users also help each other and for the most part it works very well to provide quality support. Perhaps there is a mail list for FTM as well. Take care - Emma (goofing off at work....<g>)
Over the years I have learned that no one software program is perfect. Each of them appears to have its drawbacks/good qualities. One of my more computor experiended friends uses three different programs in order to meet all of his needs. He uses FTM, Brothers Keeper and one other to saosify his needs. Guess one needs to sit down with a friend who has each of the programs and just "mess around" with it to become familiar with the different characteristics of each program. I too have played with the idea of using two, but it requires a great deal space. I use an older version of FTM and it does the job ok. I have a few complaints myself, but then I sometimes think that the user is the problem! Perhaps the newer versions have improved, am certain that someone on this list probably can fill you in on that. PAF I have a copy of, but it supposed to be easier program as it is quite interchangable with other software, but I do not have the heart to try and switch. With almost 19,00 folks in my present database it is not worh the possibility of loosing any materal. That would be the ruin of over 35 years of work. So check them all out first because once you began it is the devil to sometimes switch! My two main complaints with my version of FTM is the fact that one cannot print out a list of ALL the individuals in an index form. And that the MERGE function takes a great deal of knowledge to use without loosing information. So to speak, you have become familiar with what the word MERGE really means. I purchased a book which FRM published that offers more details on using the software. I too would love to hear from others about the newer version of FTM. Is it really better, or have they just added some more usless/fancey funtions for us to play with. The last and most important key, is using a program that offers real help when one needs it! Like a toll free number. One can spend a fortune trying to get answers out of Family Tree Maker consultants! At least that was true a few years ago. Yes, folks send us some feedback on your ideas! Judy
I am using the PAF 5 and find it extremely useful. I got it free off of the Familysearch.org under download. I also downloaded a Genviewer (this is what it is called on the website) which will let me open GED files. I got it off of a website called ZDNet.com. It may take a while to download these, I don't remember how long it took me to download. I like the idea of buying the CD but didn't have the patience to wait to get it. Once I get going I don't like to stop, unfortunately, I had sore hands the next day because I set here and typed in 348 names and their info before I realized that I had been sitting here for about 4 hours straight. LOL Hope this helps some. Regina

I use FTM only to access the cds I've bought. I have a Mac and use a program named Reunion...the IBM version is 'Generations'. Absolutely a wonderful and inexpensive program! You have so many good options in the customizing your tree and the notes section on a person is fantastic! When you pull up a person...you see on your screen them and their spouse..all the children and also both sets of parents! If anyone wants a screen shot as to how this looks, let me know and I will send you one! This program is under $40. Some of you mentioned > downloading > PT > > > Hi Gayle, That question usually gets lots of different answers.... <g>. It seems as if folks really get emotional about their software.... me included... <giggle>. But.. here goes. Went to a conference about 18 months ago where they had several sections on software. The three top rated were PAF, The Master Genealogist, and Legacy. The Master Genealogist is very good and expensive and a very high learning curve. Legacy is much less expensive and also very good . PAF is free to download and very inexpensive to purchase on CD (I think it is $6.00 or something like that now) and also very good. I am definitely anti FTM but..... that's just my opinion. Part of my frustration with it is that it seems to be less friendly than some of the others when it comes to sharing via gedcom with other programs. They also seem to do a lot of upgrades all of which you have to pay for. And.. I am very pro PAF because for the cost you just can't get a better program. It has functions equal to The Master Genealogist which costs around $100.00 (last time I looked). But then again I started out with PAF back with version 1 in the early 1980's. TMG does seem to have it over the others in that if anyone sends you a data file created by almost anyother genealogy program it can convert it to a TMG file. They have to send you the actual data file - not a gedcom though. TMG also gives you updates free for a year I think???? I actually own all three of the above - TMG, PAF, and Legacy. I use PAF for my actual database and use TMG to convert someone else's file and don't use Legacy at all... <g>. If you go PAF though I would suggest that you purchase the CD rather than do the download. That way you have it if you need to reload. It also makes it handy to put on several computers. I have it loaded on 3 different computers. Also.. sometimes strange things can happen in a download. There are some sites out there that compare and rate the various software. When I get home tonight I will try to find them and send them for you. Now.. am anxious to see how others feel. Take care - Emma
I sure would like other opinions about the pros and cons of the different genealogy software. I am currently using FTM and was thinking of upgrading to the new version 10, however, I would like other opinions about other software and if there is a better program available. Hi Edna, Just to recap this one.... we now have them in the following census: 1880 - Clarkesville, Habersham Co., Georgia ED #128, pg. 617A - image 13 1900 - clarkesville, Habersham Co., Georgia - ED #61 - pg. 5B - image 10 1920 - Clarkesville, Habersham Co., Georgia - ED #83 - pg. 11B - imabe 22 And Mary is shown as living with them in all 3 of these. So.. now we just need to find the 1910 and the 1930.... Ok... onward and upward... <g>. Hi Edna, No... no luck finding them in the 1920 census yet. I tried every combination, spelling, and angle I could think of with the indexes.
